Re: March Madness getting close!!!

Angela,

Most of the negative press Calipari has received is legit.  I like to think of him as basketball's Teflon Don.  Every program he's been at has been punished by the NCAA (2 Final Four appearances vacated) and some say when he returns to the NBA he'll have to manage with a lower salary cap.
That Texas Western victory was historic because they were the first mostly African-American team to win a championship.  It was made into a major motion picture a few years ago.

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

WOW!  How impressive is Butler and a young coach to boot!  Jdawg, bummer about W. Virginia and Da'Sean extra bummer about blowing out his knee.  I had just watched the coach saying he is one of his best players he ever coached and Da'Sean had just gotten an award and he's a good student as well.  It seems like the players have a very good relationship with the coach. I really didn't watch Duke too much throughout the season, but their 3 guys (all last names begin w/S) are really good, they have an excellent team...it will be interesting tonight.

If Butler upsets them it will be one amazing game.  I feel a little bad about bad mouthing Duke earlier.  I just got an MRI report back this morning on a knee injury my son got playing frisbee on spring break...if he needs surgery, his doctor is a Duke grad who is a big fan, so I'm rationalizing if they win, at least the doc with the knife in his hand will be in a good mood.   big_smile

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

Lots of exciting basketball this tourney...  I missed the beginning of the game last night, it was a good one and close. Congrats to any Duke fans. My husband started out rooting for Duke but ended up rooting for Butler, he thought there were several calls in Duke's favor that cost Butler the game. I thought there should have been a technical fowl towards the end when the Duke guy hooked arms and took down the Butler player...right there when Butler would have gotten the ball back could have been game changing.

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

I live in Indiana and back when I was in High School we'd go to Indy in late March to see the boys basketball state championship.  In those days Indiana crowned only one champion (this was before the state went to a class system).  The cool thing about the H.S. final four was that it was played in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.  Hinkle has been Butler's arena forever and was featured in the movie Hoosiers.  The movie is loosely based on a 1950s championship where a small rural school defeated a highly ranked big city school on a last second shot.  Legend has it that Bobby Plump told his coach during a last second timeout that "Coach, I'll make that shot".  Last night I thought that Butler forward was going to make that last shot, just like in the movie, but he missed and Butler's Cinderella season came to an end.  Great game for the sport.

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

Hi Curby,

Very interesting about Hinkle arena and your local connection.  I never saw that movie, I'll have to check it out.  Can you even imagine if that last shot went in????  I think that player is only a sophomore and thinking about the NBA draft.

I'm not sure if I ever even heard of Butler before.  I was reading about the Butler coach Brad Stevens and some of the complimentary things coach K had to say before the final.  Over the weekend, Brad got carded in a tavern, he could pass for one of the players.   My husband thinks he'll get recruited soon, I think he'll stay longer.  I heard the Cornell coach already got recruited and left Cornell.

I'm sure next year we'll be hearing how Butler's college applications increased because of this showing.

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

Hi Angela,

Did you know that Butler was a pre-season top ten team?  Had Purdue not lost Robbie Hummel then they might've made the final four, but without him Butler was clearly the best college team in Indiana this year.  I'm a graduate of Indiana University and we're usually THE team in a state crazy about basketball.  Unfortunately hard times have befallen my school due to poor hiring decisions made by the athletic department.  Coach K has connections to former I.U. coach, Bobby Knight.  He was on the coaching staff for the 1974/75 Indiana team that lost just once and was still voted the number one team in the nation despite their regional final loss to Kentucky.  Mike also played for Knight at Army.
The movie Hoosiers was voted by ESPN as the number one sports film of all time.  The role of the coach in the movie, played by Gene Hackman, was heavily based on Knight.  It's the ultimate feel good movie and you should rent it soon while monday's championship game is still fresh in your mind.  Let me know what you think.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzgOZ0xH … eature=fvw

Go Hoosiers!

Angela,
Butler has made the Sweet Sixteen twice prior this decade.  They were pretty good in 2003.

Re: March Madness getting close!!!

Curby,

I have to rent that movie for sure, I definitely saw some of that, I remember Gene Hackman! Geez, sometimes I wonder about my memory with Butler being in the sweet 16 before...to be honest in the beginning of this tourney, I was getting Butler and Baylor confused, I wasn't really familiar with Baylor or Murray State.  I was able to watch alot of this tourney, but like anything else, when life gets busy, my sports watching takes a back burner...I know I have gaps back in the 90's when my kids were young.

Duke is on the issue of Sports Illustrated that came in the mail today.  The big 7' blue devil,  Zubeuck, was considering 'Nova which is only about 45 minutes from his hometown, he lost almost 2 years with a foot injury, but came up big Monday.  That was a memorable game.  SI already has their top 10 list out for next year of who will make it to the final four in Houston...my team gets there I'm going!!  smile

What does anyone think about the NCAA's idea of 96 teams?  Is is all about $$$$$$$$ ?
