Topic: RIP Jim Marshall
Here's my story about Jim Marshall.
On Sept. 11th 2001, I was taking advanced photography in college. I had to do presentation on an influential photographer. The presentation was taking place in our campus' media department because it had all sorts of overhead projectors and monitors. Class was at 9AM, and when I got there, all the TV's were showing CNN live. You know what I saw and the rest of that story...
When I finally got to do my presentation, which wouldn't be until the next time we had class, I had an ace up my sleeve. See, everyone was doing their presentations on "artistic" photographers like Ansel Adams or surreal photographer jerry uelsmann (look up jerry for some crazy 'pre-photoshop' stuff!).... me? I did my presentation on Jim Marshall.
Nobody knew who Jim Marshall was. I noticed that through years of reading guitar magazines, seeing posters, tapestries, etc. that the photo credits on some of my favorite vintage artists were credited to Jim Marshall. My presentation was amazing. I basically did a slideshow of his work, and I played a cassette tape in the background with some snippets of me playing parts of a song played by the photographed musician. I did like voodoo child for hendrix's slide and whipping post for allman bro's photos... The fresh out of the box perspective in my class I think really turned attention to the aspects of rock photography. Why should wedding photography and portraiture get all the attention in academia?
Jim Marshall has some of the most identifiable photos of Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Zeppelin, the Stones, the list goes on. Google him, or see what I'm talking about here.

I have had a great admiration for the moments this man has captured in history. This man went deaf from taking pictures at concerts. But the frames he took were icons in rock history.
Here is an article about his passing.
