Topic: Santa Fe show at the Lensic (3-20-10)

Just got back home from the Santa Fe show.  Joe, as usual was great, as was the rest of the band.  I've only seen him once before and that was several years ago here in Amarillo.  Unfortunately we weren't seated on the main floor, but on the front row of the mezzanine level center stage (only spot I could get 4 seats in a row for the family).  If Heartaches were Nickels, Sloe Gin---awesome into, and the acoustic stuff was the highlight for me.  Oh, and he did a cover of The Who's Young Man Blues that was just killer!!!  He had some help on several songs by bringing local Albuquerque blues guy Ryan McGarvey onstage to play.  Ryan played at the Corazon club the night before, but unfortunately we didn't think it a place to take the kids.  If you haven't heard Ryan, check him out.  Anyway, I don't know if it was our seating position, or the Lensic theatre, but the vocals were a complete wash unless Joe was playing by himself, as well as the keyboards being way low in the mix, bass and drums were fine.  When I saw him in Amarillo it was at the Globe Theatre, which was built for the local orchestra, and the acoustics are quite good--you could hear everyone in the band crisp and clean.  The only guitars I remember from the Amarillo gig were the goldtop LP and the sunburst LP.  Everything else was new for me, so that was a great change as well, with the ES-355 being a very nice addition.  Joe also seemed to have improved his stage presence from when I saw him last, moving around a lot more and being more confident with his vocals.

My kids were into it for the first few songs, then lost some interest until Sloe Gin, where they could really hear Joe in his element.  They're fairly young and easily distracted, but by the end they were both bouncing their knees which was good to see.  My daughter thought that might be a cool way to make a living  cool

All in all a great show and I can't wait to see him again at Crossroads in June.

Re: Santa Fe show at the Lensic (3-20-10)

From my vantage point, in the orchestra section, the sound was superb. From the acoustic portion of the set to the most bombastic, kudos have to be given to Joe & crew for striking the exact balance. Due to the extremely sensitive acoustics of the Lensic it's sometimes difficult to get that balance. But it speaks volumes on the experience that things were done so well. Eric Johnson was too loud when seeing him there, and he didn't have the equipment Joe had.

This is what I heard. The vocals were perfect.

I think I was a little further back from you keith 3 rows in front of the sound board. Under the balcony. I did go up to the balcony for that song It sounded good up there too. I had friends on the front row a couple of first timers and a veteren. Needles to say they are Bonacrazed now. I sat with my Cousin and Her Husband who were both amazed. It is great sharing Joe with friends and family. He never dissapoints.

I thought the Lensic was one of the best venues of its size I have been to.

I agree that song sounded good, but anytime the band was really getting with it the vocals were almost a complete wash up in the balcony.  My wife and kids commented to me about hearing the same thing.  From the few videos I've seen so far that were shot on the main floor, the vocals sounded very good.

Re: Santa Fe show at the Lensic (3-20-10)

I thought the sound was a bit soft until about halfway through the show. Then the volume was good. The first few songs the vocals were a bit buried and the guitar could of been louder. About halfway through I thought the sound was pretty darn good. I was only in the balcony for that song and of course the band was soft during the vocals.

I can tolerate a louder volume over all but that is just me. I'm sure there were many people that appreciated their ears not ringing after the show.

I sat front row @ Sacto. and 2nd row in SF with a pocketful of disposable ear plugs which I didn't feel the need to use as the sound levels were tolerable. Then again my hearing isn't quite what it used to be between construction noise at work & God knows how many live gigs I've attended.

Yeah, me too. Unfortunately by that time I was too caught up in the performance to want to disturb it by having to look through a viewfinder. Fortunately someone else did though, at least "Sloe Gin" :
