Yes Rick, you could have explained that better...
Thanx for the vids. I was getting curious more and more.
I like it, although I understand the comments on the vocals. It's just another genre, but defenitely not out of tone.
I liked it,Glenn CAN go on a bit at times, but on the whole a GREAT project for all concerned, bring on the album! Reckon this'll be the Joe Bonamassa as advertised for the Classic Rock shows here in the uk,then!
Thanks to Libby Tom and others for the great videos captured on St Pats night in Riverside, i think personally that Glenn has a true rock voice and yeah it's got some of that 70's screams there, but his singing is still fine in all other departments liking his low tone best, Joe's guitar sound there just even on video cams sounded awesome, really awesome, #279
and Jason's got some lovely hi hat/snare combines going on (what you'd expect) sure kevin will make this sound epic and a different free flowing Diamond rock style , The Purest Hardest Most Flawless Rock
Looking forward to it immensely
........................ Michael
Just watched the two vids and I gotta say....I'm quite frankly unimpressed. Joe's playing was flawless, as always, but the rest was lackluster. This is just one old guy's personal opinion and taste in music. I think I'll probably pass on the cd.
Black Country sounds pretty BITCHIN' to me.......I'll take that ANY day of the week.
I'm sure The Caveman is having a field day with these guys.
After watching the vids, i am left with sort of a mixed reaction....i liked it but at times i did NOT like Glen Hughes vocals...specifically the screaching on mistreated........it was too much for me...........but like others have said thats just my opinion....i will wait until the cd comes out and then see what i think.........i think Joe rocked as usual...........and Damn it PLEASE come to MICHIGAN JOE!!!!!(with your normal band if possible!)
Watched the video's...
Not a fan...
Black Country Rocked "nicely Hard" on 3-17-10 for their first time in a live setting.
They just gave us a taste of what is about to hit us down the road.
All this jibberish about Glenn is so silly. Glenn was laying down the vibe of Mistreated and I thought he was actually toned down, if you can imagine that. Joe is so talented of a player, I can't wait to hear what this man has put down on tape for this project. Its going to be downright scary stuff when he plugs into his rock mode in a live setting. I could not pinpoint his tone on One Last Soul, but would say it was slightly Page like in the solo. A nice introduction to wet the appetite
I'm actually liking this split - it just shows the diversity of music that Joe is/can play...the future can only get better.
Well as a fan of oldskool classic hard rock and metal (as well as blues and blues rock - and virtually every style of music ever created) I can honestly say I WAS HUGELY DISSAPOINTED
......THAT I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO ROCK LIKE ANY OF THOSE 4 GUYS HAHA THAT WAS AWESOME!
They have huge potential IMO. Sure there were some rough spots but I thought for the 1st time ever on stage they were great. There were clearly some setup issues, the mix was very muddy and muffled and even Joe got lost in it at times but this was surely due to a quick change in style for the encore from a blues setup and camcorder videos can't help.
I think they sounded great though. I am shocked at how good Glenn Hughes sounded, I mean after all the years of abuse he has no right to even be standing let alone singing like that, he has surely be blessed. He is no spring chicken, just look at how Plant and Gillians voices have changed.
Sure Hughes might be an aquired taste for some (especially if you are a blues purist) but I think more than that his style/persona is what puts a lot of people off. He is like the polar opposite of Joe, whilst he is laid back and cool as Ice, Glenn is the utimate showman and entertainer. I mean he is like a character out of Still Crazy He is even too over the top for me a lot of the time but thats who he is and I think its something that is missing from music in general right now - at least people are taking notice. Love him (them) or hate him (them) at least he (they) are getting a reaction and that is what art and entertainment is supposed to do is it not? SDG are going to get some headlines thats for sure and if thats all at least it will work for Joe in the long run I am sure.
That said I really think this band is going to get better and better, I bet you not many debut concerts sounded as good as that. I also really think this will sound stunning on CD. Kevin Shirley must be rubbing his hands together like a kid in a sweet shop. He has so many different tools to play with and directions he could take this band on cd - I have no doubt he will get the best out of SDG and what with his relationship with Joe I can only imagine he will make sure he is not lost in the mix during recording lol
I also loved the chemistry of the band, Joe and Glenn are great together and I bet they will have an awesome time on the road, shame they couldn't have rolled together during Glenns heyday as I am sure it would have been rock and roll debauchery at its finest - the stories they could have told lol - Then again Glenn may have gotten Joe killed haha
I really think Glenn will challenge Joe, take him out of his comfort zone at just the right time - Joe seems to be in a real transitional phase, just before he emmerges from his cacoon as the rock and roll butterfly we all know he will inevitably be viewed as. This is the perfect time, just right in Joes evolution it can only make him better, just right in terms of the musical landscape - ROCK IS BACK BABY - just right fullstop.
There was a moment on mistreated about 5 and half minutes in where Joe and Glenn were playing and swaying in almost exact time it looked brilliant, as sad as its ounds I hope they see that and work on it/rehearse that kind of thing because there is a real prescence on stage. Then the endind with Joe dueling with Glenns vocals - great.
One thing I will say, and I hope it was just the mix again but Derek got completely blown away by the others IMO. He is an awesome keys player so I hope he isn't just there for the ride and he gets to contribute properly to the final product. I am sure like I said it was just the setup(s) but then I remember interviews where the guys said they didn't want to be a power trio and so added some keys - I hope he isn't just an afterthought.
Overall a solid B+ with huge amounts of potential for the future
sorry for being such a rank amatuer newb but can someone tell me what the Guitar joe was using on One Last Soul? I can't say I was very fond of the sound - sorry guitar. Much prefered the tone (and power) of the Les Paul on Mistreated even though I prefered One Last Soul as an actual song.
also another silly niggling comment. Joe doesn't look right wearing a suit and playing hard rock, the other look much rockier lol Am sure this will be addresed when they perform dedicated shows - at least we know Joe isn't a wardrobe changing diva yet.......yet lol
Maybe this is just one hugely complicated scheme to allow Joe to have a complete metal makeover - Rob Halford styled Joe anyone?
one other thing whilst I said I prefered the tone of the Les Paul (it sounded great), does anyone think Gibson is missing a trick not trying to create a Joe Bonamassa rock axe? A custom special Explorer or SG or even a Flying V maybe (if only for the looks lol). Obviously only with Joes acceptance but I thought it would be good for everyone involved if it was possible to further refine/define 'ROCK JOE' and 'BLUES JOE' both in terms of image and sound. Could create a whole new revenue stream, atract a whole new audience and also keep a buffer between SDG and Joes solo work in case any long term fans were dissapointed in the rock material. Hardcore fans are always going to support Joe, if only because he is such a great guy and has been so good to them but you have to cater for the Johnny come latelys and casual fans as well. Or am I just speaking out me 'arris? Like I said the Les Paul sounded perfect lol I am just getting carried away with all the possibilities
Dragon, the guitar looked like a burgundy Musicman on One Last Soul. Sherinian was playing the keys that were there. Rick's setup. His Rock setup is radically different and he will play a prominent role. The keyboard fill was very good in person.
If and when they play live again, the sound will be very different. Who knows when that will happen. Both Joe and Glenn have many commitments on tour for at least the next six months. Supposition says it will not be before the CD is released some time in the fall. I would expect some live acts in support of that release. Until that time we can only guess.
I see this performance as a "testing the waters" show to gauge support and direct marketing. A new signature guitar is in the works according to reports. Joe doesn't need a guitar for Rock. He owns practically every type known to man, including a rare Vee, which he plays regularly. It was available that night so it obviously didn't fit those songs.
Rick
thanks guys. Obviously I was joking about the Rob Halford look but wow could you imagine haha. Btw I think joe looks the business booted and suited but it just seems out of place with that style of music next to Genn bouncing about like the prince of darkness. I was thinking Jeans as well, its interesting what Joe (and all musicians) has to consider when making music, not only does he have to sort out the music but every little fine detail around it. Quality if always in the fine details.
Thanks rick I thought it probably was a musicman, just goes to show how much power and tone Joe can get from his LPs.
I also suspected that was the case with the keys. Don't get me wromg I wasn't criticising Sherinian in any way I think hes great which is why I would be shocked and saddened if he was marginilised in either the recording or performing of the new material.
Cool news about the new sig, very interesting - any more info. I also know Joe doesn't need a new guitar I just thought it might be cool seeing Joe rock out with something different - sure the V will come out for sure. Plenty of great rock has been played on Les Pauls and I loved Joes work on Mistreated so I have no worries that Joe will sound anything other than awesome. I just liked the idea of a different guitar to match a different Joe in a different style - but I guess at the core it will still be Joe and Joes style so is there a need to change? Its a fine line, we all want Joe to push the envelope I'm sure but we all love him because of the style and sound we have come to love - I don't want to see him trying to be Kerry King or Kirk Hamnett or Dave Mustaine or Steve Vai or Ywingie (although I am sure that he would do a great job impersonating any of them and in fact it might be cool to see as a one off lol). Am I rambling or do you get what I mean? I want Joe to be the same only different lol Still interested in the new sig model anyway
One thing I will say as I am so impatient to hear more from this group I really have high hopes. Can't wait. Would expect a least another encore performance @ High Voltage in July as all of Glenns old buddies are there (Iommi, Moore, Downes and maybe some Deep Purple, plus Joe obviously, - and he is playing the rock and Blues custom show the weekend after - HE HAS TO BE THERE SURELY? - Cannot wait for this festival)
I posted the videos of "One Last Soul" and "Mistreated" on youtube on Thursday. As of now they have had 6,466 and 4,233 views respectively. Although I haven't had a chance to search around to see if anyone else has posted those songs, I'm sure that i'm not the only one.
