too heavy metal to play blues. i'm sorry kid.

Re: A fan of Joe B - Check him out

we have been over this a thousand times, Sam is extremely talented and can play all genres with great feeling and skill. As it happens he likes to shred somewhat but it is not all he does, he is young. Look beyond the blinkers and look at the skill.

Yeah he likes his shredding... but he is so good and talented. I recently put in a request to him for a slow and searing blues song. As far as being too heavy metal well I really like a lot of heavy metal blues. I love Led Zep, Pink Floyd and one of my favorites is BB King. So I can appreciate a lot of different music. By the way here's a killer BB King song that I can't get enough of.

Re: A fan of Joe B - Check him out

He is more talented than everyone of us, no doubt about it. the thing is that you can't use tapping or zack wylde fast pentatonic phrases to play blues. those things don't belong to blues and don't match with blues. if he could just slow down a bit and leave those metal techniques behind...

I understand what you are saying. I definitely wouldn't classify him as the next Joe B because their styles are different. And if I was going to listen to a down and dirty blues guitarist it wouldn't be him, but he is very remarkable and as dedicated as he is to playing he will definitely make a name for himself. I have actually had conversations with him and he hasn't been playing that long. He was very good at playing video games using the controllers etc and decided if he could put that energy into the guitar he might be good. It paid off it seems. He is a really nice guy and is always learning new techniques and teaching them to his youtube fans. He is currently teaching guitar in Canada somewhere. I just admire his dedication to the guitar and he amazes me with "a lot" of his playing. Although I don't care musically for everything he plays I can't help going to his site waiting for his next installment of videos.  I love Pink Floyd but I don't like everything by them either or even Joe B but you can't control another guitarists style nor would you want anyone to control yours. I'm sure Jimi Hendrix had a lot of blues purists ragging on him also. big_smile

Jimi was a bluesman.  Sat at the feet of Buddy Guy.

I did get what you are saying Tripod  (tapping really turns me off) but you have to remember that his playing will mature and he will get into the groove rather being clinical. It takes time and experience. Only he knows which direction he will go.

Tapping? No thanks. But that's just me.
Here's the truth: Who is to say what belongs and what doesn't? There's a guy that's brought us to this place that's already started dismantling the rulebook - there will be others.
The Blues must evolve if it is going to survive. Sound familiar?

i hope he does. he has an amazing talent. he just needs to keep learning the blues "vocabulary".

It was pointed out to me that Billy Gibbons uses tapping also. So I wouldn't eliminate the technique completely. One of my favorite techniques he uses also is auto flanging.

Re: A fan of Joe B - Check him out

when did tapping sound well in blues?

Re: A fan of Joe B - Check him out

Its not what you do, it is how you do it. If you use a rule book, then how can that be blues?

lol, I guess when it's done well. cool

Re: A fan of Joe B - Check him out

what's blues?  well, i guess it's a music genre. if i had to explain every detail of it, it would take me a long time. i think the world would end in 2012 before i finish.

jamsearch, i've heard/seen malmsteen using tapping to play blues (well, at least he was trying to). was it well done? of course, the notes were ok. did it sound well? no, sir. definitely not.
