Topic: Can i change that on my JBLP??

Hi guys,

i'm asking all the knowledgable guitarists here because this week-end i just noticed something quite annoying to me ...

On my JBLP, i noticed that i couldn't lower the action because the neck pickup ring is really high, and it is not the same as i have on my standard or studio or other LP replics.

First i want to be confirmed that i can't lower action because of it being so high, and second i want to know if it doesn't sound weird if i change the ring for a standard one and get a chance to lower a litlle action.

I could live with it but wth, this guitar must be as comfortable to me as i can so i figured i would lower just a little the action.

Thanks for helping comments.
Mica.

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

there should be no problem changing it, and it wont effect the sound or tone, its only cosmetics, but the tall pickup rings you have is a historic spec ring.

but what i dont understand is why are you having issues with the pickup ring, ?? i have the tall historic rings on my guitar and the action is really low with out any issues, does your pickup ring sit higher than the fretboard??

here are how my rings look like

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

Rami is right, on my JBLP the pickup frame sits lower than the fretboard....
Maybe the pickup frame is fitted wrong side up?

Gracias Rami,

i think i am a bit confused with the .11's and it seems that it is higher than on my standard.

Could you tell me more or less how high is your string on bass and trebble side at the neck pickup screws, and at the 19th fret.

Thanks a lot.

Im not Rami but had a look for you.

19th fret:
1,5 mm top e
2 mm bottom e

Pickup screws (I think you meant the pole pieces)
1,5 mm top e
2 mm bottom e
exactly the same as on the 19th fret.

Thanks i 'll have a look at mine !!!

Did you adjust the guitar after buying it, or was it already good stock?

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

the string height on the 19th fret is 4/64's of an inch, which = 1.59mm
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/7852 … g_2399.jpg

and i currently have the neck pickup at 6/64's on an inch which = 2.38mm
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/7852 … g_2400.jpg

with that being said, i have gotten the guitar setup 2 times already after i bought it. and both times the frets where leveled and crowned, and i ask the tech to set it up as low as possible, its just the way i like my guitars, and i use .009" gauge strings.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

Actually i still play it right out of the box.
Not even altered the pup hight. Also the setup was
perfect. Flat action without any buzz.
So it is totally stock and good so.
Only little problem I had was that the h string
were jumping out of the nylon saddle when bending it.
But that was easily solved.

Good luck with yours
Alex

That's surprising to me, since the JBLP comes from Gibson leveled and crowned by the PLEK  machine (Like all Historics). My Historic (not JB) came perfectly leveled and crowned right out of the case.

my guitar is an 03, and Gibson didn't start using plek machines till 2006 on historics only, and they finally started using them at the standard production in 08 i think.

but that being said, i gotten the gutair pleked back in early 2007, and that was after owning the guitar for a couple years and putting some wear on the frets, and the 2nd time i had it setup was late 2008, and the tech did the fret leveling and crowning as well due to wear.  so even a pleked guitar would have to be setup and have the frets leveled or pleked again after some play time and wear, how often it all depends on how much you play.

i know my guitar is due for another fret crowning job, i just dont feel like spending the money at the moment haha.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

Dude that neck pickup is WAY too close to the strings !

Screw the pole piece almost flush with the cover, hold the string at the last fret, then set the height to 5/32 on the low side and 3/32 on the treble side !

You must be getting terrible ghost notes with the way yours is set !

there is nothing wrong with the pickup height. and there is a reason why i have the pole pieces higher than the cover. it gives more clarity and brighter tones, i have messed around quiet a bit with adjusting this pickup and where i have it now is a great spot for me liking.

you can hear my guitar here and tell me if i get weird sounds from the neck pickup, the vid below is a gary moore cover that i played with that classic 57 neck pickup through the whole song.

I really like the combination of the LP, Classic 30, and Blues driver. Sounds great!

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

Had a listen mate and I think the neck pickup sounds too high to me, it's especially noticeable when you play up higher.

There should be a slight hollowness to the neck pickup tone and I think if you lower it slightly, you'll get a sweeter tone.

it's your guitar obviously but i'd try it lower and see how it sounds.  big_smile

On your pics, you've measured the height without fretting the string.
That means as you play higher, you're pushing the string onto the pole piece... I can hear it on your clip.
Fret at the highest fret and then set the pickup height, you'll be happy with the result.. if not.. just put it back the way you had it  wink   wink   wink

Re: Can i change that on my JBLP??

you guys have a JB Les Paul?  Awesome.  I couldnt afford one.  How does it play?  I have a Les Paul Custom 2002 Silver Burst.
Heavy heavy guitar

its no big deal, these are my old pickups anyways, i just had them in the guitar for the last week and 1/2, i sent my other set of pickups to get modded to a 4wire lead pickup because i'm planning on adding a couple push/pull pots for coil splitting and phase switching. hope to get those other pickups back in the guitar sometime this week.
