Topic: Palace of the Fine Joe Arts

It is late. My throat is hoarse from cheering, my ears ring from the  front row audio assault.  Joe tore it up with the best show I can remember. (only running on 5) A little voice stress showing from the tour, but minor.  Set list, who cares. I will leave it for others to fill in who were taking notes. All my favorites for sure, Sloe Gin, the intro was to die for,  and some new ones too. Guitars? A Gold one, a Blue one, a two tone Firebird, A Red one, The Vee, the acoustic and some others. The encore featured a duet of Bird On The Wire with Sandi Thom, fresh off a flight from London.
Others reported the show tonight was better than Sacramento. Hard to believe but no argument from the witnesses tonight.
If it wasn't sold out, it was so close to not count. Over 1000 people rocked the house, all on their feet moving and dancing to the finale of the Just Got Paid medley.
The road trip continues tomorrow. 1076 miles on the odometer since the launch from San Diego. Next stop Bakersfield and 22 hours 'till our next Joefix.
CathySiler got her mystery prize. A live cell phone feed until either hers or mine died. Both occured but resets made it happen.

Rick and Helen, dazed but not confused.

It was a pleasure to meet you and Helen, Rick.

Shred, I thought the Palace show was a hair better than Sacto, but both were amazing!  We brought 10 Newbies to their Bonabaptism last night.  They were....appropriately battered wink

NOW the friends "get it," as one of them said.

Ahh, it's nice to spread the energy!

Our pleasure too Lisa. Now, the wheels go round and round, following the Bonacruiser South on the road. I guess that makes us official BonaCruisers.  lol

Dangit Shreddy I had you a ticket if you'd just brought yer butt down. Didn't materialize till I was walkin' in the door with my homeboy Jimi Dunlop and he says I got a ticket we could give someone, since he had a silky stage pass as well. Jimi hung backstage helpin' keep an eye on Hubert Sumlin who came out for the show. Sorry bud, it's all about timing. Where there's a will there's a way. We'll know better next time. Good to see ya in Ahnoldville Thur.

That was feedback I was gettin' from several people that saw both, but I enjoyed the hell outta both. You & Helen should have held on to Libby's coat tails, she'd have gotten you in. I got caught up gettin' Tiran in touch with Carmine since he and his wife and a young guitar player friend came up from Santa Cruz and were about to give up and head home as security was rather bullish. That's no way to treat a Doobie Brother. I asked Joe if he thought there was a difference and he said no way they were both as fun, but he did say he could see people trying to get up and shake it at the Palace only to have these usher ladies pounce on 'em and make them sit down. I had to remind Joe that the Palace has a more refined theatrical history and thats the protocol there. I thought Joe may have been enjoying himself more than usual after that certain lady friends flight finally arrived. I've never been to a bad show and they all have different moments to remember.

I DAT!!!!!  I just think the acoustics in the Palace Theater are better.

The sound was crystal clear as if you layed the needle down on a "best of"Joe album (plus Young Mans Blues....love the JB version, just pure rock), through a top of the line stereo system, turned the volume up to about 8 and just rocked out for 2 hours. Thats my view from 5th row dead center.

If Joe Bonamassa reads this, or if you personally know Joe, please pass along my most heart felt, ears-ringing, throat-raw, hands hurting from clapping ... THANK YOU  JOE and Carmine Rojas, Bogie Bowles, Rick Melick and the sweet angel, Sandi Thom. After years and years as a Bonamassa fan, never getting to see Joe for the craziest, stupidest reasons all of which would seem unacceptable to you Die Hard Joe Bonamassa fans, I finally got to see Joe Bonamassa at The Palace of Fine Arts last night. I had a pen and paper and was going to write down the set list... Ha !  after the first song I was in Bonamassa Bliss, no notes, no pictures, just singing along on the choruses, sitting there with my mind blown, watching him play the guitar and not believing all those guitar sounds were being made by one man, all the while I was watching him do it. 'If Nickels were Heartaches' made me cry, I know it's a Warren Hayne's song, but Joe owns it. 'Sloe Gin' made me cry again... I never cry during the sad songs anymore...and the keyboard/ guitar interplay intro was awesome.  After and hour and a half with the full band, Joe was alone on stage with an acoustic guitar, I'm running out of adjectives, Mind Blowing, again, I'm watching him play and thinking no one can play that fast, that clean and with so much soul and truth coming through the strings. Jazzy riffs, East Indian Scales, Son House busking styles, Joe did it all, magnificently !! Skip ahead to the duet with Sandi Thom, after reading Joe's facebook updates and twitter tweets, I knew of her, but the 30 second samples on allmusic.com didn't impress me enough to buy her CD's , but live, last night, it was like she and Joe were of one voice, one soul, beautiful, amazing. I saw, felt, some kind of magic, chemistry from the 11th row... I'll be buying her CD's next time at Amoeba,  and the finale, Joe get's on his Gibson flying V with what looks like Cadillac trim, demanding we stand up ! insisting we stand up !! and tearing into  the final song of the night, God I hope someone posts a setlist so I can burn myself a 'copy' from my Joe CD's to play in my car, can't do it on 'Young Man Blues' though, right? that's not out yet, is it on the new CD 'Black Rock' ?  and the extended solo's with the Hendrixian playing and, dare I say it, Joe and the band play Zeppelin better than Zeppelin, now I never saw Led Zep live, but I've had a copy of 'Song Remains the Same' for 30 years, I have Led Zed live DVD's and Joe 'Live in Person' and on 'Live From the Royal Albert Hall' , Joe and band play Zeppelin better than Zeppelin did, Joe didn't try to match Plant's vocals, and thats smart. even Robert Plant says he can't match his vocals from then...anyway, I've lost my train of thought... sitting here typing, listening to 'Live From NoWhere In Particular' and right, right, the last song of the night, I looked around the Palace of Fine Arts, such a refined establishment, and the crowd was going nuts, cheering, screaming, clapping, and the paint was blistered off the walls, and the roof was blown off the place, and there was total unbridalled Rock n Roll all over the floor... Last night was one of the most amazing, unforgettable concert experiences of my life.  Thank you Joe Bonamassa.

Looks like you had the time of your life.  And you are very bonaexcited.  It's easy to get that way.

I've seen Led Zeppelin live and Joe and his band do not play Led Zeppelin better than Led Zeppelin.  There concerts aren't even the same.  Led Zeppelin is a totally different band than Joe and his band.  It's great that he covers and pays homage to them.  But Led Zeppelin have a different skill set then Joe and his band even when they cover Led Zeppelin.
I'll just leave it at Led Zeppelin has a certain spirit that is part of what there music is.

EPIC first post Brianbrady..Welcome to JoeWorld and a full on addiction. Love it!! We beg for reviews of BonaBaptisms, and you delivered big! Thanks! I was there too via the phone, and even that had me grinning ear to ear. (Thanks RickB). Like BJJ said, now you know!  Cathy

Re: Palace of the Fine Joe Arts

I saw Joe up in Sacramento and then the next night in San Francisco. They were both excellent shows, but it did seem to me that the SF show was somehow a touch better. (Not sure why, but I don't think it was just the venue difference; the band's energy on stage seemed different).

The exciting thing for me was this: At the end of the Sac show I noticed Joe throwing his pick out into the audience. Now, my girlfriend had scored us front row center seats at the Palace of Fine Arts, and I went into the show hoping to catch the pick. Sure enough, Joe threw his pick, but it landed somewhere on the ground in front of us. I dove down, and a bit of light caught it and I scored the pick! It may seem silly, but I was psyched.

It'd be great if a tiny bit of Joe's guitar mojo came along with it, but I've not yet tried it  smile

Cheers,
Bruce
