Topic: I decided to learn drums

Any drummers out there?

I figured I could help quell my guitar fetish by learning another instrument. I have a couple hours behind a drumset already, and got a bunch of beats down. Now it's just working on speed. I have pretty decent rhythm believe it or not!  lol

How many drummers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

5. 1 to actually do it, and 4 to say how much better Neil Peart could do it.  wink

Yeah, why not another instrument - why drums instead?   lol  lol  wink

Just kidding. I really admire people who can play several instruments.
This week, me and Mrs. Fingers saw "Dr. House" on TV. At the end of the show, he (Hugh Laurie) was playing piano. Then he grabbed his harp and started to play it - still playing the piano with his left hand. And on the wall behind him there were a Les Paul (with Bigsby) and what looked like a Gibson acoustic. I also heard him play the Les Paul 1 or 2 seasons ago.
That guy is cool! And we also loved him in "Black Adder": "Well, hooooraaay!"  big_smile

Rusty (mono-instrumental)

Ok, Jeff - you'll appreciate this line of reason.
I'm sick and tired of seeing and talking to bass players who say they are really guitar players. Like I just play bass 'in this band' - I really play guitar.  roll  Plus you can tell guitar playing bass players because they have no bass theory whatsoever, they play it like a guitar with only four strings. They don't lay any foundation, they don't color the music, and they mirror the guitar riffs.  It leaves a huge empty spot in the music.

It's like when Happy Gilmore said "I'm a hockey player, but I'm playing golf today."

Re: I decided to learn drums

Nic,

I do agree with point about the bass playing guitarists. We have one too!.

I have to say it IS different. We were so impressed at his ability to learn our set quickly and he is a real nice guy too, fits in so well, but it does have a different dynamic which we are just getting to used to. I'll have to watch for the other points you mention as well.

Of course, it does mean he tends to tell the guitarist a thing or two which I think BJJ would appreciate, but sometimes they don't! Haha!   lol

But then you will faced with the same problem, as your proficiency at drums increases you may find yourself at odds with drummers you play with. Not good. Always remember their proficiency for hitting things!

Hey and Rusty, I was just watching those earlier house episodes. Seems he switched from the Strat on the wall to the LP in season 3. I'm a latecomer to the series and have been catching up courtesy of LOVEFILM and am now a House obsessive compulsive.

So BJJ, here comes the big admission and in no small way down to you I have also started with a new instrument. Must be Lead Singers Disease (LSD) again huh? Guilt complex at never really being part of the music, just the deliverer of the story.

So as you said there weren't enough bass players out there I have taken up the noble art. I have no lofty ambitions, but I have some time and the inclination to be a real part of the music in some small way, sometime, somewhere. Hey, and bass players are a friendly bunch. A mate has loaned me his one of his spare basses and another delivered his practice rig to my door to look after while he works away this next year or so. No excuses!

Well, it's my way of dealing with LSD anyway wink
