Topic: tele time ?

ok so you have a strat and you have an lp, do you need any other guitar? a tele perhaps or a prs or can u get every sound with a strat and an lp?

Re: tele time ?

Something like a 335.

Re: tele time ?

I'd go semi-hollow electric with perhaps a varitone... like a BB King Lucille or 335 - for sure!
Tele's do have honk, and treble up the yin yang... perhaps a semi-hollow with the f-hole in the top?

Re: tele time ?

to me i think the ultimate modest guitar collection to have and to cover almost all types of music is as follows

- Les Paul
- strat
- tele
- ES 335(or similar hollow body guitars)
- a P-90 equipped guitar (that being another les paul gold top, or a special/junior)

and MAybe adding an SG for the looks.

and depending on the type of music you are mostly into, you can add a guitar with a Floyd rose term.

so with those 5-7 guitars you can cover almost all types of rock music

its all a matter of principle...

curious about tele's for what would you use them - country or something else? i know jimmy page used one for the 1st Zep album and Jeff Buckley used them but i mostly think of them as a country thang, perhaps i am wrong?

Re: tele time ?

My favourite tone is Clapton with his Telecaster Custom through a cranked marshall (Uno after he left cream in the blind faith era) to me that is one of the best tones I've heard and I'm always tempted to copy it...

Re: tele time ?

The Telecaster he played on blind faith had a Stratocaster head stock from another famous guitar of his, Brownie.  He was into telecasters but hated the U shaped necks so he put the V shape 56' Stratocaster neck on the Tele.  He put it back on because he found the Stratocaster more fashionable and recorded 4 really good albums with that guitar.  Delany and Bonnie and Friends Live Featuring E.C., Eric Clapton the album, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (Derek and the Dominos was the house band) and Layla and other assorted love songs.  To me 69', to 70' was his best most creative time period shame he became a Junky and missed out on what could have been an even more amazing career.

I myself have been debating on a Telecaster the last day or so.  My main guitar is shot basically it will require lots of repairs and lucky me I insured it.  If I get the whole amount back that I had into it they will trash my guitar and cut me a check.  I have one good Strat that I suppose is suitable but I really loved my main one.  I started looking around today at what I could get for $800 and I keep looking at Telecasters.  The new American Standards are ok they feel a lot like my beatup Stratocaster, but I didn't dig the pickups.  I really like the 52' reissues but they are out of my price range.  I might shoot for a classic 50's Telecaster for $700.  They seem to be a hidden gem.  Everybody wants a Stratocaster but lots of great solos are mistaken for other instruments.  Telecasters just have a vibe and tone all their own.  They are NOT just for country.  They can do Blues, any gender of rock, and country.  YOu might not like Metal on a tele.  I can't help but think Black Crowes when I think of Telecasters.  Rich Robbinson has a bunch of beautiful Telecasters but my favorite is his Esquire in a Blonde color with a black pickguard, that guitars just sexy.

early page/zeppelin days is a perfect example, don't forget Rolling stones. there's Joe B although he used the giglotti mostly. and i guess all the the country chicken pickers did it. but i have seen some very impressive blues played on tele's, especially when you use the neck pickup.

yes i know some people used a tele with a bucker in the bridge but its still a tele haha.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: tele time ?

I have and always will love Les Pauls the most but someday...someday...I hope I'm man enough to play a Tele!  I don't think I quite have the skills to tame that guitar yet!  There's no place to hide when your trying to tame that deceptively simple plank!

I love them blonde esquires , Joanne Shaw Taylors is a stunner tbh...

Re: tele time ?

You can't get every sound with a Strat and a LP. The question is what you like.

The ES 335 gives you that warm/howling semi-hollow sound. I love that sound! I have an Epi B.B. King Lucille, and although the craftsmanship on that one is not very good, I play it a lot because of the sound. The guitar has a varitone switch and they say that it can give you Strat-like sounds. But I only use it on the bypass setting because I'm the kinda guy who rather has several guitars with one unique sound
each than one guitar with many different not-so-unique sounds.

If you're interested in an allround guitar you should get a 335-type with varitone or a solidbody with 2 splittable humbuckers, IMO.

That twangy bridge-pickup sound of the Tele is unique, too. You can't get that with a (normal) Strat or LP either. Joanne Shaw Taylor plays a Tele with a humbucker in the neck position. Great blues sound!

My shopping list for the complete blues(-rock) guitarist would be:
- Les Paul (great warm, fat sound). It's gotta be a sunburst for me. Sorry, Goldtop fans...
- Strat - I love the "between sounds" (neck+middle and middle+bridge pickups). Preferably 3 single coils and either olympic white or candy apple red.
- Tele with a humbucker on the neck. Butterscotch is my color.
- ES 335. Dark red looks good, but those sunburst 535 models built by Heritage make me wanna get one!

A decent blues guy should not forget his acoustic guitars:
- A normal 6-string with a cutaway.
- And one of those shiny metal-resonators, please.

Not featuring:
- SG, Firebird, Thunderbird - I don't like the looks. Sorry, just my taste...
- Explorer, Flying V - too heavy-looking for my taste. I know Albert King played a "V", but ...
- A guitar with P90s. Never played one. And I must admit that I don't like the plasticky look of those pickups.

Wow, that's quite many guitars I don't want to have! Who said that I have G.A.S.?!?? mad  wink

Re: tele time ?

what about prs guitars? anyone here a fan or not?

Re: tele time ?

I'd get a PRS before I got a Tele, but the PRS will be much more expensive...

If you wanna hear some awesome blues rock on a PRS look no further than Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam. He does the Rory Gallagher stuff just like Joe does too. Check this out.

Re: tele time ?

custom 22's sound very sweet

Re: tele time ?

They retired the Custom 22 this year.  Only the Custom 24 will be made now.  If I had a PRS I would really like 2 different ones.  SE One for that Les Paul Jr. Mountian look, and I've heard that the SC 245 is to go up against the 59' Reissues from Gibson.  A review I have in a guitar world or guitar player said that for a about 3 grand less you could get a SC245 that feels and plays like a Les Paul 59' Reissue.  They also claimed the woods looked better then the gibson too.  I guess they would sound as good.
