Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

I'm hoping to go next Weds. too, if the weather and work cooperate. The shows are from 8pm to midnight. The area in front of the stage is tiny! 4? booths along the wall, a couple of long tables and a bar on the other side. There is also a large room in the back, but no view. If I go, I'll be going early.  Hope to see you Vik and Carl!    Cathy

big_smile  Cool!  And thanks for the scoop on the start time and the table situation... I will be there early too.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

So, Carl and Cathy, are you still going to Kclinger's tonight?  And if so, what time do you think you'll be arriving?  If the music starts at 8:00, do you think 6:00 is too early, or maybe 6:30?  I just want to be sure to get a table, as I'll be having dinner there, plus I'll want a seat for the show.  As of now I'm planning to go, but if it turns out neither of you are going, I might reconsider, so let me know please.  I'm going to try to nap now, but I'll check back.

I'm still not sure. I'll make up my mind once I get a timeline on this storm. It's a long journey on back roads for me. I don't mind being snowed in, but I don't want to get snowed out! I'm sorry, I know I'm no help.... If you're going,  6-6:30 is a good idea.  Cathy

Well I napped a little longer than I planned, but I'm hitting the road now, so that puts me there at about 6:45.  I hope you guys make it.  I never heard from Carl.  And I'm gonna pretend I didn't hear Cathy say anything about a storm, cuz I didn't know anything about it before and don't have time to check it out... but it looks fine to me!  wink  tongue

Well Cathy never showed, but thankfully Carl did.  Talk about an up close and personal experience... it's a small place to begin with, and we were sitting in the booth closest to the band, pretty much right on top of them, as there's no actual "stage" and no floor space in front of the band.  Anyway, it was a good show, glad I went.  I'm not real crazy about her vocals (just a little deep for me, don't hate them though), but she can definitely play some guitar!  I was also quite impressed with her drummer... powerful, loud, energetic... as much of a pleasure to hear and watch as Joanne's guitar playing actually.  But I'm not real big on writing reviews... maybe Carl will chime in and have something interesting to say... I know he spent some time talking to Joanne about gear and whatnot.

The girl needs to swing down the west coast if she wants some serious exposure. Hopefully her label will add some dates out west.

We'll be seeing her at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival in April.  Cathy, wish you could make it this year.  Never seen her, but bought her cd.  I know we're in for a treat.  smile

I can sum it up in one word "Wow!".  As Vikki said, the venue is extremely compact and a three-piece fits comfortably but we were almost right on top of Joanne, so the sound wasn't great and the PA was pretty awful.  Nonetheless, the woman can play her a** off....love her tone and approach.  Like Vikki, I wasn't super-crazy about her vocals although part of that was probably the poor PA as I think she had to turn it to distorted levels to hear herself (there are no floor monitors, only mains) but I was simply blown away by her guitar prowess, and, more importantly, her conviction....she clearly MEANS what she is playing.  The rhythm section was very dynamic also (although quite loud from where we were seated less than 10 feet from Layla's pounding beat....the woman just KILLED "Manic Depression"!)

Looking forward to her return to the Western Maryland Blues Festival with a real PA and professional sound engineers.  Bought the CD and really like it.....a LOT.

Go see her if you get the chance.....seriously.

P.S.  Vikki:  Thanks for showing up and hanging.  Cathy, we missed you and the weather turned out to be a non-issue my way, but I understand using caution.

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

Many times have I pitched a "blues club" soundman off the catbird seat with a cable around his neck.  mad  But I'm mellow now.  smile    They are often stoned, deaf and drunk.  Once I had one tell me that the owner was an arrogant cheapskate and that was all he had to work with.  This crap here.

When I looked at the board I just shook my head and patted him on the back.

Jeff:  Actually, there was no "soundman", the band sets their own mix with the (very) limited PA, and I assume it's because the owner is barely surviving the economy as it is and can't afford to make a larger investment in the audience's enjoyment.  They manage to pack 'em in there despite this issue as the Wednesday slots usually see mid-level national acts come in for a couple sets and an average $5.00 cover.  Have seen some great shows there.

As I said....looking forward to seeing them on a real stage with real sound reinforcement.

CarljMD

P.S.  I am digging the CD...particularly the slow burners like "Blackest Day".

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

I need to see her!

Crappy sound makes all the difference- but even with crappy sound you can tell if someone is a star. Man, if they are doing their own sound at these clubs, i give her even more props. Hitting the road and getting the word out. Good woman:)

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

Great to hear these reports, we are starting to miss Jo over here!

Re: Joanne Shaw Taylor U.S. Dates

Looks like Joanne is earning some serious frequent flyer mileage!  cool

She's back in the US in April, June & July.
