Topic: Vancouver 2010

The Winter Olympics, Vancouver, Canada, kicks off today.
Unfortunately, there's a severe lack of snow!!! ....at the moment.

Looking forward to watching some good performances! Snow permitting!

Re: Vancouver 2010

I'll be tuning in as much as possible. I like the Winter Olympics so much more than the Summer games.

Hoping that local gal Lindsey Vonn will be able to compete.

Re: Vancouver 2010

Sad news about the Georgian Luger. I hope they stop showing the video. I wish there was a way to ship my snow to them. On the other hand, having ski events delayed due to snow gives Lindsey time to heal her tibia. Stoked for speed skating!    Cathy, airchair athlete

Sad news indeed cathy. I've not seen the video of the tragic accident, nor do I! What is it about our media today, that something this tragic has to be replayed over and over..... ???

Re: Vancouver 2010

Tragic. I've seen the video. First thing that came to mind was to wonder what the hell they're doing having those concrete columns so close to the track. Kid didn't have a chance. Anyone who jumps the track there, at those speeds, is going to be killed or crippled. I suspect it's going to be an issue before it's all said and done.

Re: Vancouver 2010

On a lighter note, how about that opening ceremony! I and the wife watched last night and it was totally amazing. The combination of the projected light graphics and human performers was stunning. Can you imagine a stadium rock event with that type of light show? WOW.

They need to put up catch nets like they use in the downhill skiing. The top bobsled driver for the US said that the turn 11 is extremely difficult to get right technically and is at the point in the course where the highest speed is reached. The 4 man bobs are hitting over 100mph there. There has been comment among the competitors that the course is too fast.

Re: Vancouver 2010

I get to watch one of my favorites today. Biathlon. I enjoy sport shooting and the combination of cross country skiing and shooting is very difficult to master. Shooting accuracy depends on relaxation, breath control and concentration. Imagine trying to do that after sprinting on skis when you are gasping for air. I too am a big fan of winter sports. Funny for a guy from a place with no snow!

Re: Vancouver 2010

I have been a great winter sports fan all my life because I grew up mainly in Austria, where fun in the snow quite naturally gets more attention than anything else.

As a result, I'm in the lucky position of having 'favorites' from three different countries.  big_smile Wearing my Austrian hat, I was very disappointed earlier on when big favorite Schlierenzauer only managed third to his arch-rival, Amman of Switzerland.

Now, with my Dutch hat on, I join the rest of this speed skating crazy nation in front of the tv in the expectation that Sven Kramer will win the gold. Anything less would be an enormous, stunning surprise.

With my US hat on, I'm delighted that the ladies Combined has been postponed, giving Lindsey Vonn more time to recover from her injury.

RIP Iron Man

My, my, Hammer. Multi everything. You're bound to get a winner or two in that group.  I tend not to wave a flag, just really enjoy the competition, though the wife does fan up over the ladies figure skating. But I'm getting ready to wave a big flag tomorrow when we take back the America's Cup. San Diego is a sailing hotbed.

I'm really no flag waver, Rick. I'm just lucky enough to be able to cast my net in a much larger pool than most.  wink

Kramer will double his gold in the 10k, where his superiority is even greater. Lee and Skobrev in second and third are typical major Olympic surprises, all credit to both of them.

Hedrick will now hopefully retire, while Shani Davis needs to stick to shorter distances, where he will certainly still win some medals.

You're looking good in skijumping. Austria has some good ones.

Good call on Kramer. So far he looks golden.

A fast Norwegian in Downhill? That is a rarity, no mountains in Norway to speak of. Must have been an Austrian with dual citizenship.

No mountains in Norway???

Re: Vancouver 2010

I may be in error but I don't think they have big mountains where downhill type skiing is done. Lots of hills though as I remember. Been there a couple of times.
