Topic: gig camera?

After all my photos of Davy Knowles from the other night came out rubbish I decided I need to buy a new compact digital camera for taking photos at gigs.

I don't need the camera for much else (except maybe holiday snaps) so lots of features are unimportant. The shots I take will probably never be printed (and certainly not in large size) only displayed on my PC and shared via the web so top picture quality is not essential. I won't take many movie clips either. So I suppose the important characteristic is taking a decent  photo in low light.

I looked at a Canon Ixus 95 which seems a good price at Play.com

http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electro … type=genre

but my question is - would it be better to spend say £200-250 instead? Will I get a camera that does more of what I want for that money? Or is just as good to go cheaper unless you're going to spend megabucks?

I know there's lots of gig photographers here so I'd welcome any advice or recommendations for particular cameras.

thanks if you can help

Re: gig camera?

Hey David,

I just recently left the world of point and shoot cameras and entered into the world of Digital SLR cameras. I too was having problems with shots that I took at venues turning out the way I wanted. Now, I didn't take a really deep plunge, but more of an extry level Canon Digital SLR. Here's the one I just purchased:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Cam … hisProduct

I did have a Canon PowerShot previously and it most certainly served it's purpose, but after about 6,700 photos I decided I wanted to upgrade a bit. I've already taken a few pictures with the new camera and am happy to report a huge difference in detail with this new one. I'm looking forward to really testing it at a show soon. I'll also be purchasing an additional lens, a telephoto one, for this new camera and I think for cost sake, this is the one I'll be buying:

So at least now, you'll have one opinion for what it's worth.  smile

Re: gig camera?

Concert photography is all about how much light you can get into the camera and how quickly. You really need a DSLR unless you are right on top of your subject and they are well lit. entry level would be the Nikon D90 which has the same chip as my D300, results are as good with a nice lens VR 18-200 is a good allrounder.
Look for something that can run at hi ISO 3200 upwards without grain. If you have the dosh the D700 is the perfect concert camera 6400 ISO with no loss, amazing really but costs a bit.
Rule of thumb is to use manual settings open aperture fully and adjust your shutter speed for best results on the fly.

Re: gig camera?

You can't go wrong with a Cannon Ixus series. Am a little biased, as i have one. Good price, easy to use, nice pictures.... what more do you need!

Taking pictures at gigs is always difficult. Getting the lighting settings right is an art in itself!

Hi David,

I took the plunge and went to Comet UK last December and bought a Panasonic Lumix DCM-FS8 for the princely sum of £130. It was actually half price at the time. My first outing for this camera was at a Joe gig I attended in Norwich (photo's are in the cool pics section on the forum if you want to look), and all I did was turn the flash on the camera off, and set it to auto, and just did the point and click thing after that.

It's a 10Mp camera with 4x Optical Zoom, it's small, lightweight and takes pretty decent photos. It also has face recognition and lots of other stuff too numerous to mention. It also has the capacity for 15 minute video capture.

I was really pleased with it, and it will be going with me to all future gigs.

For the money I can't fault it.

Good luck with the hunting

Re: gig camera?

Hi David, I have a Canon DSLR 400D (Rebel in the states). I binned the standard lens pretty quickly as I needed a more flexible lens. I went for the Sigma 18 - 200 which is a pretty good all round lens for the money although a little slow on zoom. You need to pay big bucks for fast glass at this end of the scale. I also have a Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens which is absolutely brilliant for indoor and landscapes.
I also have a Canon Ixus 75, which I use in a housing for underwater shots and video. It's also great for concert video when the goons insist on you putting the SLR away (most venues will prevent you taking an SLR into a gig these days unless you have a photo pass, and even then limit you to three songs).
Martin is right, you're best setting the camera on manual and adjusting aperture and speed to get the best results. Slight underexposure tends to give the best results. High ISO numbers are possible on later cameras, but in reality some noise is not that much of a problem for "arty" concert shots.

Although I did no post this subject, I found it very interesting. I need a good bonus next month. Little hope though sitting on the web all day!  lol

Re: gig camera?

Thanks for all the replies. Thanks too to Sandy (samjp4) who emailed me with lots of useful tips and info. It's been very helpful and made me focus more on what I really want.

I've come to realise that all this isn't quite as simple as I'd thought. I now see that to take top quality photos I would need a DSLR but after some hard thinking I'm not going to go down that route because...

a) the cost  (if you moved the decimal point one place to the left on the price of the Nikon D700 it would then be in my budget area  hmm  )
b) I want something I can slip in my pocket
c) the issue of not being allowed into many gigs with a DSLR without a photo pass

All I really want to do is take some snaps to remind me of the gigs I've been to and to put up on the web to share with people on the Forum etc. Also, when I come back from a gig I like to change my desktop background to one of the photos I've taken so we're not talking highest quality.

I think that the Canon I was looking at is probably a bit TOO basic so what I'm thinking of now is a Fuji Finepix F200EXR. It seems the camera has been designed specifically for coping reasonably well with low light situations and has a special mode for just the sort of thing as gigs. Review here :

http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-c … 200-EXR/p3

I haven't finally made up my mind yet but I want to buy the camera before the Oli Brown/Billy Walton gig on the 28th . I'll give the camera its maiden outing there and report back.

Re: gig camera?

David - sorry I haven't been in Off Topics much this week so I missed your post.
Sounds like you've made the right choice in going for a compact (for now - just wait til you get hooked on gig photography  lol ).

The Fuji model you've linked to has decent specs and should do a reasonable job. If I was in the market for a compact right now I would also be looking at the Panasonic Lumix range which are getting great reviews - something like the TZ7 which has a decent focal length zoom on it for the bigger gigs when you can't get so close to the stage. There are just so many high spec compacts on the market at the moment, it can be hard to know where to start, so you have my sympathy for the task in hand. Have fun!  cool

Ohhhh. You should read the gear thread. GAS stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. The insatiable need to buy more and more pedals, carbs, wahs, cables, etc. searching for that perfect tone. Poor devils buy a git and a basic amp, then embark on the search for the Holy Grail of tone. VERY expensive hobby. The same holds true for photography. Questing for the perfect camera and lens combo, then video, and on forever chasing the magic pixel.  lol

Re: gig camera?

Yeah sorry getting a little carried away, not everyone wants to lug around a DSLR. I have seen excellent results with point and shoots. Obviously the better the lighting the better the pics. Still go for the one that gives you the highest iso to noise ratio (many point and shoots have adjustable iso). Also get one with manual override, once you get the hand of it it is easy and you can quickly adjust for different light levels. Next time we are at the same gig, I will happily go over it with you. I am no expert but do my way around a camera.
I have some excellent results and thousands of crappy pics. I tell anyone to take as many pics as they can at gig, go OTT. If you camera can do rapid shooting get large card and use the rapid shoot. Mine manages 8 frames a second, i watch the performer and look for the best places to take pics. Also watch for the performer repeating certain moves (this happens ;lots). Then you can preempt and start sooting just before, through and after and certain stance. This typically gates around 4 seconds so in my case 32 shots. Out of those 32 one or two should be keepers. Its not uncommon for me to take over 3000 pics at a gig and end up with 10 good ones. I have had the please of having a couple used in print and by artist for promotion, that is very very satisfying. These two are examples and I know I took around 100 very similar shots and these two just had the edge.

So by the best you can for your budget
Play with various settings
Take shitloads of pics and I mean shitloads.

Oh I get it. I never go near the gear thread. It makes me feel inadequate that I don't understand a word there either. Now it make sense (if you see what I mean). Thanks Rick
