Topic: Ceriatone

Hey guys,

I was just curious if anyone knows the difference between the Overtone Special, Overtone S&M Special, and the HRM.

Thanks,
Logan

Re: Ceriatone

i emailed nik from ceriatone that same question and here is the response i got (he recommended the hrm for joes tone, which i found a little strange):

The OTS and S&M are 80s type of Dumble ODS.

The HRMs are 90s versions of the Dumble ODS.

The 90s have the following differences:

a) Post OD tonestack inside the amp (treble bass middle) so you can further tweak the tone (for OD channel)

b) More tone switch since we have both Deep and Mid Boost wired (the OTS and S&M only has Mid Boost [labeled deep on that amp  i think])

c) There are of course differences to the circuitry. One of the most important is that the Master Vol is not shared, ie's only for the clean channel on the HRMs.

This allows for easier vol and tone preset between channels, esp for liver performances.

Tone wise, the 80s are generally more organic and open sounding than the 90s, although not by much.

The OTS would have more of the traditional Dumble dark, smooth OD, while the S&M was tweaked so it's brighter, and yet more open sounding.  The HRM would have the highest gain, and tightest for the OD channel of them all. For mayer or perhaps Robben Ford tones, the HRM can be a good candicate.

If you're looking for more versatility, perhaps the HRM would be it.  It can  rock pretty well too.

The Bluesmaster is also in the HRM family. THe cleans are a bit fenderish on this one, but the OD isnt as gainy as the HRM. Carlton reputedly used this version.

Re: Ceriatone

no problem!  stratpaulguy86 was also a big help too!  he seems to know a good deal about these babys.

i am still waiting to pull the trigger on one.  i don't really have a use for it right now - stupid apartment buildings!

Re: Ceriatone

i really thought the OTS would be more appropriate for a joe like tone...

Re: Ceriatone

You can score a nice Fuchs ODS on eBay for a few hundred more... to me it's totally worth it.

Re: Ceriatone

Like i said in the other post, i would KILL for a fuchs, i love the way they sound... so organic and warm. I just rarely come across them for the right price. What would be another "D" style amp to pair with that?

FYI- that is identical to the one I have. Fuchs modded Bassman with Merc Iron. I wouldn't pay that though. This should be around 1100-1200

Tag's Fuchs modded MusicMan over on TGP is the prize.

You could buy this one...

There is only one man building them, and its not like you average Fuchs, Two Rock, etc... no website, contact info available.  I heard that its really not that much from Dumble himself like 5 grand or so, its just getting him to make you one.

I'd definitely go for the regular OTS or OTS S&M Special for the Joe tone... Have a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZhobscG … mp;index=0

From an interview I read, John Mayer had two dumbles made, and when he heard Two Rocks, he started using the Two Rock instead. He said they are very comparable. I know JM isn't a fav in these parts, but it's just another perspective I thought I'd toss out there.

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

Re: Ceriatone

Mayer uses a Dumble similar or is the same Dumble that SRV used ...Steel Stringer and his Sig Two Rock amp through two 4x12's - just saw him, gear and his Trio in concert recently.  If you like clean tones and versatility to get some nice non over top OD tones...look no further then Mayer..different then JB's nice tone.  I must live in an elevator, not sure why musically anyone has a problem with Mayer guitar playing...the kid can play.

Re: Ceriatone

John Mayer is a fantasic guitar player.  His tone is to die for. I think that sometimes we get caught up in a search for perfect overdrive and we forget sometimes that clean tones can sometimes cut thru better and sound thicker than overdriven tones.

I would love to get my hands on a Dumble.  But sadly I am not famous enough for Mr Dumble to consider making one for me. And all the others go for 40-50 thousand dollars.  No amp is worth that much money.
I'd get a two rock or Van Weeden long before I'd buy a dumble.

Re: Ceriatone

Good luck on a Van Weelden. Those are like Glaswerks and Bludos on lead time- 10-12 months and around 8K for the Twinkle-land Head (4,600 Euros) - Make sure your dutch is on point.. big_smile
