Naaaah. Even MsTia, who is a real Who fan said, "I didn't really like that. Aging rockers should not be trying to sing or showing white belly flesh."
I thought (at my age) that was a tad harsh.

Well, I'm glad Stu said it, I was a bit busy this morning to comment. But now that I have a moment....I too have been a very big fan of The Who dating way back. However, what was put on during the halftime show was unfortunately, not The Who that I remember. This halftime production is starting to remind me of some of the close minded FM "Classic" Rock stations that are around that are so deeply set in in old Rockers music, that they don't play anything even remotely modern. What's next, halftime with the old age home?
Please, Daltrey can't sing anymore and neither can Pete Townshend. Too bad we can't get Joe and the Guys up there to kick some real tail during the show. The frickin' crowd's jaws would drop in one massive gaping stare followed by what I could only imagine as the most deafening cheers ever heard. Of course, I'm living in a world right now where so many people my age don't want to look past their nose regarding music. Oh well, maybe when I'm in a nursing home, they'll let me play my Joe CDs as loud as I want.
But hey, on the bright side, it was a good game and the halftime stage was pretty.

THE WHO is my favorite band of all time...There is no band that can get a crowd into the show like they can...Sounded to me like there were 100,000 fans singing along with them...I certainly will always miss the days with Keith and John...But, I believe that Pete, Rog, Zak, Pino, Simon and Rabbit can still bring it...Just to generate this kind of discussion after 5 decades of performing is impressive in my opinion...Long Live Rock!...
I give Daltry (65 yrs) and Townshend (64 yrs) a huge credit for giving it a go live. Given the short amount of playing time, all the lights, noise, and crowd energy I think they did all right. It had to be somewhat chaotic. I know if I had been there I would have thoroughly enjoyed it. My sister and I have gone to see many bands from our youth and we feel a tremendous amount of love finally seeing a group or someone that we've listened to forever. For some it's not a "picture perfect" performance, but it's the flavor that's still there to savor.......

I think the whole trend of half time entertainment at the super bowl post Janet Jackson is like a big safety net. Stu, I hear ya' where you're coming from, I think we are around the same age and you sound like my hubby. (My husband's probably worse, he wouldn't go see Johnny Winter with me...)
I'd take the Who over so much of the popular stuff out there today...Jay-Z, Rhiana, any of those screamin' ladies, which leaves some of the younger bands which may not have enough name recognition to be chosen. And I'd rather watch the aged Who over a BonJovi or U2 type of band.
This is a situation where you have to worry about what you wish for...the alternatives are hip-hop/rap, country twangers and some of the young bands are risky. I watched some of the Grammy's, I'm one of those people that likes to see some of the dresses on the red carpet, so I watch a little before. 2 different times when the Kings of Leon (very talented young band) got the mic, I'm not sure if it was the same band member or not, but he wasted precious on air talking about how much alcohol he'd drunk.

Total heresay, but I got wind the lineup may be the Eagles next superbowl, I think they can appeal to a wider range of anyone who cares about music watching the superbowl. And, we can even laugh when we see Joe Walsh contort one his guitar faces.
I have a superbowl suggestion- We all know Joe would do a great job, let Clapton be the popular attraction and Joe the other guitarist...that would be superb!! 
tp put it as nicely as a can. daltrey couldve sounded better. that light show could not have been more out of place. they would have fit in a japanese cartoon i guess, can't think of anything else that looks right with that amount of flashing lights. i think a stillframe of an aging townsend windmilling with his gut hanging out captures the performace as a whole. nothing against the who, we all age and they actually did better than i thought given that fact. everything against whoever picks the bands. i know they have to play it safe but would it be too much to ask for them to pick a group that has put out relevant material within the last 20 years.
they should have the black crowes play it. they are pretty popular and still in top form. i know that is never going to happen because pretty popular is not the same as ultra mega popular. i suggest kings of leon for next year. not my favorite, but a new rock band that is super popular, has the arena and not complete and utter garbage.

Ah Stu, the three studio albums you mentioned classics in their own respects, but Live At Leeds gets my vote as best "live" album IMO. I got a copy on CD some years back including twice the songs on the original LP which makes it that much better. I loved Joe's tribute to them when he covered Young Man Blues when he played Leeds. Didn't he play it at a Scotland gig as well?

I believe I read somewhere that Live at Leeds was The Ox's favorite Who album as well. Good stuff, Maynard.

I totally understand what you're saying. The most I was ever hit over the head by any aging rocker, was seeing Leon Russell a few years ago...its different than your feeling since I had this fantasy crush on Leon for years starting in the 70's

And my hubby said, don't ever bring me to see him again...I'm making him sound cruel, but in reality, he treats alot elderly and listens to sad health stories all day long and if he wasn't so kind & compassionate, they wouldn't open up to him. He seems to buffer himself outside of work to stay grounded.
And the first thing my hubby said when he saw Pete on the stage was...I'm glad he's wearing a hat....and later on...geez, I wish he'd button his shirt. 
Actually, this is making me really tune into my hubby; he's getting a little melancholy on me with the approaching empty nesters, our 2nd son went off to college this year and my daughter's leaving next year and I don't laugh at all his guy jokes, he really misses his sons...
I guess I'm in the minority. I'm a long standing Who fan, and it's my opinion they've produced some of the best music ever made...but for me it was painful to watch.
Maybe because it reinforced my own mortality and the fact that I'm getting older too? I dunno...they're a shell of their former self.
I've got to give 'em props for giving it a go, but I think maybe it's time to start featuring acts at the top of their game (or at least a little less further removed from it).

My sister & I caught a couple of Rod Stewart concerts and they both rank right at the top of GREAT evening of entertainment...."the old mans music" was great also ......maybe a little outside of the box....plus I gotta' go back to the age thing.....If you can be in your 60's and put on the kind of show he put on, then I want to be Forever Young, too. And the voice.....

Don't be too hard on Rod Stewart, .... a big fan since the Faces. The guy has been through throat surgery, and can now only use about 75% strength. The guy loves to sing and perform... and still sounds good, ... for an old timer!

It is a good thing when older stars can still come out on stage and bring it. It is not a good thing to me when they are a parody of their former selves.
The saddest thing I ever saw was BB King forget the lines in the middle of "The Thrill is Gone" a year ago. Just broke my heart.

But BB is 85, not 65. I'm not saying I don't give them full credit for a pair apiece...
My brother told me, after listening to a bunch of twenty somethings talk in his office yesterday, that they all refered to the Who as a British POP band. 
They were the epitome of the angry young men in the 70s.
Pino was a smart choice.
