Ditto to Rick's comments....exactly. If I had to pick 2, Zep and the Beatles for me.

Also, I think AC/DC is a fab band for good hard core rockin', but I think I'm in the minority, both of the singers over the history of the band are real screamers, I can't always understand what their singing and I think their constant singing style is screaming (maybe its the pitch) and that makes me not listen to them as much...I feel like someone is yelling at me. hmm  Just IMHO.  But what a great rockin' band!

Rock music is so much about the experince of the live show so IMHO a vote can only be given if you have seen teh band live.

So my top 3 are heavily influenced by their live performances, - and because of that I have had to expand it to a top 4 as the 4th place cannot be omitted from the list.

1) AC/DC
2) Blackfoot, - Ricky Medlocke best front man I have seen combined with some awesome musicians and entertainers
3) 9 Below Zero
4) U2

Going back to the original post, for me it just has to be the Stones. If Carlsberg made Rock bands, they'd start with Mick, Keith, and Charlie.................. wink
The fact that they are still going as a band speaks volumes in itself - you could even argue that they were the original Rock band, (ie - Rock without the Roll)  but that's another question.
As for the Beatles - as has already been said, they were more a pop band - possibly the best pop band............

My Custom (neck 'bucker) 5 string, open G tuned 52 Tele reissue did not influence my choice at all........................ wink

For a fifth choice of "New" Rock Metallica or Opeth, not that the latter would chime in with lots of people....

It's suprising that noone has mentioned Queen yet. Sure they were far more than just a rock band but they created such a body of work over their careers. Queen's song must be as well recognised as any other artist in the world. You know the songs, you mother does, and so do your children. Other than the Beatles there are very few bands you could say that about.

That The Rutles were INDEED the greatest rock band ever.  All these years later no reunion is forthcoming though fans wordlwide froth at the mouth at the very mention of one only as a wistful wishful thought...

Of course, how could I forget them! Great album's band, think of Tragical History Tour and Shabby Road and my all time favourite song I Am The Waitress. Reunion? 'Fraid not as long as Stig is dead.
