Topic: New Apple iPad

Just seen Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs with the new iPad!
Looks nice, as all things Apple do!
Only time will tell if the iPad will take-off.

Re: New Apple iPad

I've been following this story since I first heard that Apple was introducing a new product - presumably a tablet computer of sorts. We currently don't own anything from Apple (except an iPod), but the next computer we buy is definitely going to be a Mac - a Macbook Pro is what we have our mind set on. I don't see the iPad as a replacement for a computer, but it is certainly looks intriguing. Most of the initial reviews seem to indicate that it does a lot more and costs a lot less than what was expected.

Re: New Apple iPad

I followed the keynote live yesterday evening. I'm a little bit disappointed by this new device. I'm not saying it's not great, I have an iPhone (and the iPad is a kind of big iPhone/iPod Touch), I'm gonna buy my second MacBook and I'm really happy with them, I wouldn't use anything else.

I expected something less "i" and more "Mac" (yeah, the iMac is perfect big_smile). It's a powerful gadget, the new iWork seems really slick but it lacks multitasking and other things that makes a device more a computer than an entertainment gadget. I'm quite sure it will be a success, the price isn't too high (16GB iPhone 3GS costs €575 here in Belgium, it's more or less $800) and it's really powerful. But I'm less sure I'll buy one anytime soon. Maybe the next OS will give it some "wow" features. Wait & see.

Apple MacBook Pro, excellent choice, it's what I'm using now!

I think in the future, we will all be using hardware like the iPad as a computer. From today, the Mark 1 iPad is here. Watch this space.... as they say!!!

Re: New Apple iPad

I am also a dedicated Mac user - started with a Classic and worked my way through most models including the original iBook.  I have resisted the iPhone so far as have an iTouch which is brilliant.  Used it for internet in Canada last year when I went to a conference and had free WiFi in my hotel room.

The thing is how long I will be able resist buying the iPad ... I too have been following the development of it.  Want to hold out until the next version - but you never know, I might just break and rush for the Apple Store!

Re: New Apple iPad

Nice to know you're another dedicated Mac user Maggie. Like you, I have an iTouch and love it, but don't have an iPhone yet. I think it is always wise, to wait and see before buying.

First review said "where's the phone and camera"
2nd edition s'posed to have better broadband.
My recommendation, wait and let the fools rush in and get the bugs out.

That first reviewer didn't really think it through, as in, why should it have a phone? That comment wouldn't be made about a lap top and it certainly hasn't been made in reference to any other tablet computers that have come out.

Or was it just that the reviewer had bought into the advance hype (none generated by Apple as it goes) about all the supposed features it was going to have.

As a 1st gen media tablet it is as slick as anything that Apple brings out these days. Let me just make it clear that I own nothing made by Apple (lack of available cash is the main reason), but the idea of a giant iPod Touch with all that potential via current Apps and all those that will be written specifically for the iPad does have it's attractions. (well, for me anyway big_smile )

If I had the money I would buy one, but I would wait for the WiFi/3G version (which here in the Uk is about April I think)

Like all these gadgets, if you don't like it don't buy it (non specific 'you' here)

Re: New Apple iPad

I have been trailing a 'very' similar product, in fact near identical wink. The main problem I have is that if you are using transport and in a sitting position it is nowhere near as comfortable to use as laptop. I often ended up trying to prop the thing up. With a laptop you can adjust the screen without even thinking. As with all these items the battery life is nowhere near what is claimed. Its neat but limited, I would wait for the 2nd generation. Look at how long it took them to get the iphone right. At first you could not even text! Then no cut and paste which is a huge pain in the ****. Now it is near perfect. Much prefer the iphone to the tablet.

Re: New Apple iPad

That's a good point Martin made, about having to prop up the computer.
Something the designers I guess, have thought about.

Never hurts to have another look at the web site www.apple.com

Re: New Apple iPad

I did wonder about how this would work. With the iTouch it is small enough to hold. Hmm ... as a designer am trying to imagine how they could get around this!

An Indian colleague tells me that in Gujarati "pad" means "fart". lol  I wonder if Mr Jobs knows that? hmm

You'll never think of the iPad again without thinking "iFart" lol

Re: New Apple iPad

There was an article about the "pad" name. One of the biggest objections was from women who related the slang for feminine products.

here is a review. http://www.retrevo.com/content/blog/201 … mpid=Email
also has an embedded link on 10 good things.

I don't think, just the name will put off customers from purchasing it. Look at some of the names, car manufactures, with the help of Ad Agencies... come up with!! Ridiculous, some of them!
