That is really great news, super album, super nice guy...

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

Very, very well deserved!

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

Agreed. One of my favourite albums of 2009 and his London gig in April was one of my top 5 of the year. Such a nice guy, too. wink

Amen Guenter, a whole lotta "girl power" last night. Highlights for me were Leon Russell sittin' in with The Zac Brown Band & Jeff Beck's tribute tune to the late great Les Paul. Derek is a helluva talented guitar player, but he and his band don't usually come to mind when I think of the blues. His wife Susan was in the same category as well. Also happy to see Green Day score again.

It was good to see Trucks and co won the award, as for me musically it was the best of the nominations. It's a contemporary blues award so it does not need to fit with the conventional perception of the blues. In fact it might actually bring attention to people that there is more to the blues than old men or wannabes of one kind or another. big_smile

congrats to Derek!

Somehow he's found a way to get the attention from the academy, Rolling Stone mag, and other pop culture notables. Would be nice to see Joe on the grammy list one day. I can't understand why it hasn't happened yet. I say that every year. big_smile

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

I feel like Derek's album got on the Recording Academy's radar for various reasons.  He is on a major label (Sony).  He also released an album that contains brilliant guitar playing, but balanced out with extremely well written songs.  The guitar playing isn't the central focus of the album, but instead a necessary component mixed with fantastic singing, compositions, instrumentation, a killin band and a humble, unpretentious, organic vibe.  There is enough blues to satisfy the blues listener, but the Derek's unique blend of blues with R&B, jazz, soul, funk, world, folk and rock has really given him his own unique niche.  He has big ears and listens to everything from Coltrane to Sun Ra to Skip James to Aretha to Ali Akbar Khan.  His dedication and open mindedness to the purpose of music has given his playing and music a spiritual quality that transcends most music today.  He also truly makes the Derek Trucks Band, a "Band", focusing on collective groove and spotlighting the talents of his band members.  I have been listening to Derek since 2000, and it is so great to see him get this recognition.  Hopefully Joe next year!

Congrats to Derek, I'm sure the award is well deserved and all, but he just doesn't float my boat in a major way. sad

I like Derek.  There;s a hole in my musical world that he (and Susan at times) fill brilliantly.  It is that old school niche where where jazzy southern R&B turns in to BLUES.  His mastery of his instrument is like Coltrane or even better (for me) like Miles Davis.

He is different and not afraid to be.

And I think it is a fact that this is one band that on record has benefited greatly from focusing on songs more than jamming.

Next week's (8th February) Paul Jones show on BBC Radio 2 will include a special on Grammy Award winners. As there's very little chance of him featuring Beyoncé, I look forward to hearing Derek on the show next week. big_smile

Yes Phil, did you notice Paul did not mention the winners - just confirms the show is pre-recorded. There is also to be a broadcast of Joe's show from London on Feb 17th aired on 15th March - I guess someone else will mention it in general topics

I thought I heard 15th March too, but Roger heard 13th, which is a Saturday. I think we are correct and Roger's date is probably a typo'.
