Topic: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

Hello Gentlemen (and occasional ladies),

So I decided that for my next guitar, after I get my flying v in feb/march (I CANT WAIT!!), I am going to do a build through warmoth. My running idea is a chambered mahogany body, with a quilt maple top. A mahogany neck, with Brazilian rosewood fretboard. Wilkinson VS401 bridge with planet waves locking/string cutter tuners, and a Graphtech black tusq XL nut. I know that I want S-S-S set-up, with a single coil sized humbucker in the bridge (see older topic of mine). I'm really diggin' the Lollar Vintage Blackface p/u's for the neck and middle possition... anyone have any better ideas? I am open to them all! Also, any hot rodding ideas? This is going to be a very elegant, yet bad a$$ guitar. I want it to look pretty but then melt your face off lol.

Thanks,
Logan

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

There are a ton of great sounding single coil pickups out there.  If you want something with a smooth tone and high output check out the Dave Gilmour EMGs or Lace Sensor Golds.  If you are into the SRV/Hendrix tone then I would check out the Custom Shop '69s.  These have the most aggressive and narly sounds that I've run across.  Texas Specials are okay but IMO are a little overwhelming.  I like the '57/'62s in my '57 Reissue.  Also check out Dimarzio for their virtual vintage and humbucking/single coils!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

thanks for the heads up Justin. I HATE deciding which pickups i wanna use... there are so many possibilities and i am an awful decision maker. The CS69's do sound wonderful though!

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

I've got a set of Bareknuckle pickups Irish Tours in my strat. They're expensive but well worth it. If you're after a specific kind of sound, send them an email and they'll advise you on what will be best for your guitar and the sound you want from it.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do and those who do not.

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

If you're into Eric Johnson (JB is), Klein makes amazing copies of the EJ pickups... I just ordered a set for my strat. There's a great demo video on the website... it's the S-7 set.

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

I really like my Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups.

I'm getting some handwound single coils for my strat called a Charlie 5 from

Made in Tennessee.

He can make vintage pickups that sound vintage. If you've heard the new Eric Johnson strat's pickups and think the pickups sound too "new"... Smitty can make you ones that sound old. 30 day tweak policy. Install the pickup, adjust stuff, and if you want any tonal or output adjustments made, just send it back. His site has plenty of youtube videos to hear the differences in his pickups, and will make one to your specs if requested.

I've heard people swear by his pu's, so I thought I'd give them a try. They'll be coming in next week baby!

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

My prference is for Fender branded p/u's: CS 69's or Big Dippers.  Lindy Fralin Blues Specials are great.   Lollar makes nice pick-ups.  EJ's Fender special wound are good and can be found on e-bay.

Re: Ultimate Strat pick-ups?

I replaced my regular strat pickups with Fender Noiseless and I am very happy with the way they sound. Very humbucker like but still keeping that Strat bite
