Topic: Great White Shark Diving

Since Geoff posted the shark video with JB accompaniment, I will relate this true story of real shark dives.

My business is involved with supporting local charter boats. One of the things they do is take a load of passengers to Guadalupe Island off Northern Baja California, Mexico, for dives with Great Whites. It is about 250 miles Southwest of San Diego.

They use cages tied alongside the boat for the divers to enter and observe the sharks. Guadalupe Island teems with Great Whites and it is common to have several swimming around the boat in the 12 to 20 foot size. The divers take videos while they are in the cages. Many of the divers complained that the viewing ports in the cages were too small and obstructed the camera angles. The operators decided to make the ports a bit bigger to accomodate the customers wishes. This brings us to the story.

Three years ago, on one of the diving trips, the boat had a nice group of sharks circling around and the divers, in groups of three, began their adventure. There were four sharks swimming about, 3 of substantial size including one monster called "One Eyed Sally" which is about 22 feet and 3000 lbs, and a small one about 6-8 feet and maybe 400 lbs. The crew use a whole tuna on a rope to entice them close to the cage. The small shark became very frisky and agressive, trying to eat the bait which the crew would jerk out of its reach each time it tried to take a bite. Finally, the shark went for the filming diver in the cage through the view port. The view port was large enough for the shark to get its nose and mouth in up to it's dorsal fin and it rammed itself into the diver hitting him in the middle of his chest and pinning him against the back of the cage with its nose, snapping all the while, but unable to get a bite. The shark then tried to get out of the hole but it had become wedged and stuck, so it started thrashing around violently. This got Sally very excited and she came up and grabbed the tail of the small shark and began thrashing around as well. This caused a great strain on the tether ropes that attached the cage to the boat and they parted, allowing the cage to drift away, with the three divers inside and the sharks now in a feeding frenzy trying to bite through the cage and get the divers. After a bit of panic, the crew launched a skiff and towed the cage back to the boat after the big sharks had eaten the small one. The only injury was the diver that got pinned, who had a large bruise on his sternum from the nose of the shark. I believe the wet suits of the three divers needed flushing too. lol

Thanks Rick,

The moral of that story is... Do not mess with Sharks, they have been here a lot longer than we have! I have total respect for them!

My flesh creepeth !!
Theses critters may be beautiful but as far as I'm concerned they are beautiful killing machines !!

I don't like 'em !!

I can't swim in  the sea without being worried thay are lurking there.

Re: Great White Shark Diving

Sharks (of most kinds) are the only things underwater that make me really nervous.  Raised in,on & under the water since a kid, sharks are still the ones.  Not cudas, etc.

By the way, Great White Sharks are a protected species in both Mexico and the US.

They can eat us but we can't eat them. yikes

Thanks for the clip Rick. Try looking at it again, but without the soundtrack. When you"re in the water ( their domain, not ours) there is no soundtrack!

When you say, protected in Mexico & the US ...you do mean, waters ?? smile ha ha!

Believe it or not, humans are not on a sharks menu.
More people get killed and eaten by Hippos than shark attacks every year. It's just, a Hippo hasn't had a lead role in a hollywood movie, and been  directed by Steven Spielberg. As much as i love that movie, it did more harm than good for the Great White.IMO

Very misunderstood animals! It doesn't kill for fun (something we do... by the way!) it kills to live and then reproduce itself. It has been doing that for millions of years. Even before we crawled out of the sea, and stood upright!

Although we are not on their regular menu, they are swimming eaters with a BIG (and not very selective) appetite. If one of us happens to be a target of opportunity, ...... yikes . Hors d'oveures ? As you state, it doesn't happen often, but once is too often for the eaten.

The Island had a thriving commercial Mexican fishery for Abalone and Lobster. After 3 divers were killed in a year, the fishery was abandoned.

In addition to shark diving there, sport fishing for tuna also is done. One of the captains related to me that during a good tuna bite, of 50 to 100 pounders, he saw one of these large sharks eat almost every tuna hooked for over 2 hours. It came to over 1000 pounds of fish! He thought that it would get full and allow a few hooked fish to be landed. Didn't happen. The only fish landed were when more were hooked at one time than the shark could get to. they finally gave up and departed.

OK, tell me this then.... how would you feel if someone came and took food out of your larder/fridge/kitchen .... at an alarming rate? It's their larder/fridge/kitchen, we are emptying! The oceans are over fished. When they eat it's not for profit, it's to survive! smile

Ha... maybe so...but the population of Great Whites has declined due to mans ignorance, stupidity, and greed! It's a subject I'm passionate about.
Not just Sharks, but all the other species we share a planet with.

They had their adventure I'd say.
Rick, you aren't writing about the music. Did they play the title song of "Jaws" on the boat?  wink

Re: Great White Shark Diving

I don't think they needed to. It was surely in each diver's mind. I liked the way the diver jerked his arm back in as the shark made a pass at it. I would want eyes in the back of my head if I was hanging that far out of the cage to get a shot!  yikes

Re: Great White Shark Diving

As you know, sound travels faster and clearer through water, than air.
Whales for instance, communicate to each other, as far away as entire oceans. No internet for them, after all they have been on this earth far longer than we have! smile

As i said before.... humans are not generally on a sharks menu. But if humans are stupid enough to be in their environment, the odd shark will take advantage given to them.
