Topic: Clapton recommendations

Hello.  I know there are quite a few clapton fans here.  Just wanting to know about where to start with his solo material or live shows.  The less pop more blues stuff.  I'm aware of cream, yardbirds, blind faith, the bluesbreakers etc, so just wondering about the solo stuff.  Thanks

Re: Clapton recommendations

From The Cradle - good collection of blues covers
Live At Madison Square Garden with Steve Winwood - for the 16 minute Voodoo Chile alone! yikes
One More Car One More Rider - a lot of pop songs like My Father's Eyes, ect, but he really rips it up on guitar, extends those songs and jams out pretty cool.
Eric Clapton - his first solo album
Journeyman - has an 80s sound to it, but a lot of guitar stuff, has my favorite song of his Old Love.
Sessions For Robert J - Robert Johnson covers, I'd recommend it over Me & Mr. Johnson, it's rawer.
461 Ocean Boulevard - for Motherless Children - GREAT SONG!
Derek & The Dominos - Layla

Re: Clapton recommendations

Deezer has just about covered it cool and I know it is strictly not a solo album, but I would highly recommend "Road To Escondido" with Eric and JJ Cale cool

Riding with the King goes down well

I like Slowhand and the unplugged album as well

Eric Clapton--Live in Hyde park

I think his best live DVD as a solo artist.

Just one night - top live album, 1979(!) Tokio; together with Albert Lee and Chris Stainton.

Re: Clapton recommendations

Another collection that's not been mentioned as yet is the Polydor release 'Blues' issued in 1999. It contains two CDs. The first is a collection of blues covers from between 1970 and 1980, the second CD is a collection of live songs (note they also feature on Crossroads 2, yet that is more expensive than this). Not all the songs are consistent as Clapton was not always in a great way during the 1970s, but all in all it's a pretty good collection (and it avoids those pop songs - except one!):

Re: Clapton recommendations

I have that. Honestly, I found it rather boring for my tastes. I would much rather listen to the self-titled debut, 461, or Slowhand than that compilation.

Re: Clapton recommendations

If you´re looking for Blues-stuff, go for "From the Cradle". "Just one night" has a cool version of "Further on up the road"...

Nothing can ever beat Derek & the Dominos "Layla" though - at least in my opinion. This album has its eternal place in my top 10 albums of all time. smile

Re: Clapton recommendations

My most recent EC purchase is Road to Escondido, not  a new album but such a great album to listen to. JJ cale continues to hang onto Eric's coat tails, but together they produced a classic album here

I think I'll have to have another go at listening to this album. I think I've only listened to my copy once as I found it dead boring. Too much JJ and not enough EC. hmm

More like the other way around. Without Cale, we don't have classic songs from Clapton like After Midnight and Cocaine. Cale was extremely influential on Clapton.

Re: Clapton recommendations

Journeyman
From The Cradle

Re: Clapton recommendations

From the Cradle (1994)
I know, I know, it's "only" covers. But Clapton plays with such passion and fire that compensates a lot for his 80s pop schmalz. And his singing is just as good (on a sidenote: Clapton is often underrated as a singer). Give us one more like that Eric.

Eric Clapton (1970)
The self-titled first solo album. Produced (with other contributions) by the late Delaney Bramwell. This was when he switched from Gibsons to Stratocasters. I think he used Brownie on this one.

Ocean Boulevard (1974)
Definitely the best of his laid-back 70s albums. Great songs, great backing band.

Just One Night (1980)
This is the album I learnt to play guitar with. Great selection of his 70s live material with the Blackie tone at its best. I played that album to the ground. I still have my original vinyl copy. You can almost see through it.

Re: Clapton recommendations

Lots of great suggestions here, but nobody has mentioned the live double-CD, 24 Nights yet... what's up with that? hmm

I was about to mention tracks 5-8 from the first CD including Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and Johnnie Johnson on piano. I don´t like so much the rest of this double CD: in fact Eric is playing with three different bands, one of them together with a PHilharmonic Orchestra. All tracks are from his RAH concerts 1990 and 1991.
