Topic: Help me choose an amp!

I'm in the market for a new amp and just can't decide the best way to go. I'm obviously looking for a good joe type tone but don;t know where to start. I have a budget of about £1000. I play mostly at home but have the occaisional jam with friends. My thoughts so far are.

I have got a few nice overdrive pedals so am tempted to get a good clean sound and use the pedals for overdrive.

Short list is.

Fenders: Hot rod deluxe, deluxe reverb, twin reverb.
Marshall: JVM, vintage modified, 1974 combo
Blackstar, Artisan 30 combo or series 1 45 ot one of the new HT-series.
Cornell: Plexi or rambler
Modelling amps, The new marshall JMD-1, Line 6 spider valve mkii.

The blackstar artisan is tempting me at the moment. Simple design with both marshall and fender influenced channels and both can be used at once. I Just don't know!

An outsider but flexible choice would be the axe fx ultra and atomic.

Anythoughts or anymore suggestions.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

I have a JVM410H and it's a beautiful thing ! It does the clean stuff nicely, the crunch can be Jubilee style or 800 style and the heavier stuff is just insane. I play in a ( very ) heavy rock band, and the gain never goes beyond 4 on the Orange OD channels... But the beauty comes from the clean and crunch channels which are just as good as it gets... Plus it sounds really good at low volumes.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

The reason I have mentioned the cleaner amps with pedals is I have always struggled to get tube amp distortion to sound good at home volume. Even my blackstar HT-5 head is tricky.

do a forum search for Poor Man's Joe Bonamassa Rig
Joe himself chimes in on the best amps under a grand.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

Don't buy until you've tried the blackstar series one 45 and ht stage 60. I'm in a similar situation to you (with a slightly lower budget) and have looked into alot of amps. I am just about settled on a blackstar as it is the only single amp within my budget that has both impressive cleans and overdrive. The rig for that was  a 1978 Lab Series and a 1965 Princeton Reverb. The guitar was my ummm Lucille of course...  I really dig the Lab Series L-5 and L-7.  Collectively I paid 500 dollars for both and they are so warm..  Sometimes Solid State wins the day!!

Re: Help me choose an amp!

the 1974x wont crunch at home levels unless you dont mind shaking walls / pictures off walls, its low wattage but its very loud... So basically your after a good practise amp that can be used for jams / small gigs?

Fender Champ XD its £200 or there abouts I'd check that out I usually use it for small gigs and its always my bedroom amp over a blues deluxe and a 1974x, and it does both the marshall and fender thing really well smile in fact I'm going to a jam night now with it...

The blues jnr takes pedals well and would be a good house amp... it also has quite a bit of volume on tap...

I already have a super champ xd that sound ok on voice 8 for the marshall thing. I have the gain backed off to 3 and use a blackstar ht-dual or fulltone ocd for the drive sounds. The cornell plexi 7 is tickling my fancy. Very simple and minimum fuss. I really love the blackface setting on the XD. Maybe I could try a couple of mods on the super champ xd to see if I can get that marshall thing a bit better. Maybe through a vintage 30 speaker would help.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

Anyone tried the new peavey vypyr amps? Check this guy, he makes them sound pretty damn good!

Re: Help me choose an amp!

Has anyone tried the MA series from Marshall?  I am still looking for a good tube amp under $1,000 but I'd prefer new as versus used and then have to sink more $$$ into it.

2008 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Goldtop (with the cream plastic from the 58RI)

Re: Help me choose an amp!

Have you thought about the Blackheart stuff ? Really killer, especially for the price.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

I am in a similar situation. I am currently looking for an amp that I would use mainly at home for practice and take it to sessions that I join every once in a while. So I want a good sound at low volume but the amp should be able to do small club gigs / sessions.
Just yesterday I have checked the Hughes & Kettner Statesman amps, both the 20 and 40 Watt version. These are really impressive amps with nice cleans and great crunch. And they sound good at bedroom level. You should try them.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

After much thought  I am going down the fender with pedals route. Just need to decide which. After seeing stratpaulguy's stop videos with the super reverb that has entered the running.

The amps i am seriously looking into now are:
hot rod deluxe
twin reverb
deluxe reverb
super reverb

with pedals i know i could get one of those to sound close to the marshall sound but not confident getting a marshall to sound like a fender.

the search continues? Anyone here getting good joe tones from any of the above amps?

Thanks bro, and of those choices I definately reccomend the Super Reverb.  The only drawback is that it's a little heavy.  The great thing about the Super Reverbs are that they have all of the quintessential Fender goodies: killer reverb, tremolo, great cleans, takes pedals well, ect.  They Super is rated between 40-45 watts which is perfect for low volume clean playing and a nice grind without blowing your head off.
Here's a slight disclaimer though:  I've never been nuts about the reissue amps.  They usually sound good by themselves but sound harsher when you use pedals.  I couldn't ever get a warm overdrive from my Twin + overdrives.  They are very overpriced IMO because you can get a vintage one for less than a reissue!  I paid $800 for my '68 Super Reverb!  I would scour the earth for a Silverface pre-master volume Fender combo and put a Tubescreamer/Fulldrive 2 in front of it.  Cheers

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Why don't you add the Vibrolux Reverb to your list? Same wattage as the Super Reverb but 2X12's speakers instead, which is a lot easier on your back than the 4X10's!!! I'll keep following your thread because I have a Metro JTM45 head I'm not totally satisfied with (I'm really hard to satisfy). I may change it in a near future, and a vibrolux might do the trick (if I find a US citizen willing  to ship it to Europe... well, that's another matter...) or I may get a Tiny Terror head + a matching clean amp head to go into my cab and follow the several-amp-rig model... Have to consider that too... Anyway, I realize that no one has ever had me spend so much dough on gear than Joe since I'm on this forum... Geez, I have bought a Les Paul, sold three amps and got three others since I'm here, I don't even count pedals anymore because it's sick, and I'm still selling/searching. Good luck man!
Cheers

Re: Help me choose an amp!

Tweed Peavey Classic 30 in Tweed is a good one too. from the early 90's if you can find one.

Re: Help me choose an amp!

I've changed my mind again damn it! I tried the marshall class 5 with my fulltone OCD v4 and a dd-3. Bonamassa tones with a les paul and hendrix tones with a strat. A great little amp. My blackstar HT-5 is going on ebay!
