I couldn't get into those psychedelic space rock bands (Hawkwind excepted big_smile ). Once saw Amon Duul II and it went right over my head. yawn hmm

How about a bit of jazz fusion with Time is The Key by Pierre Moerlen's Gong. Fantastic recording quality by brilliant musicians and great for night time listening. wink

I had the strangest experience doing this back when I was in college... was a little altered (just herb) and sleepy... it's a 23-minute song... I was kinda drifting off towards the end, in that "twilight zone"... well there's a background sound that keeps going higher and higher as it approaches the end of the song... I think it inspired a dream... except it was more like an experience than a dream... it felt like my soul was physically being sucked out of my chest, and there were clouds of gray smoke swirling up and around me... I woke up to hear myself saying something out loud which I'd rather not repeat here (oh alright, it's a key element to the story... I was saying "Satan take my soul")... to which I immediately yelled out "NO!" to try to take it back... I was freaked out for a long time after that, afraid to die, etc.  True story. neutral

But don't worry, I'm sure this won't happen to you. tongue

By the way, I had a somewhat similar dream-like experience around that same time of my life doing the same thing with an old YES album... minus the soul-sucking... but of course it was already gone by then...... roll tongue

I have had similar to vikki...when i first shared some "herbs"with friends . Went along to see "Woodstock" when it first came out, 1970. Can't watch some of it now ....  as it propels me back to that moment... it's so wierd!

By the way, on a Pink Floyd forum I shared that on, LOTS of people told similar stories about Echoes, although none quite like mine!  That song seems to be a catalyst for psychedelic experiences.  I honestly don't think the herb had as much to do with it as the music itself, and the conditions I listened to it under, with the headphones in the dark.

I also think there's something about laying down on your back, something about the back of your head against the bed/floor putting pressure on that part of your brain.  Anybody familiar with sleep paralysis?  That's when you feel completely awake but you're hallucinating stuff around you and you can't move, often accompanied by a feeling of weight on the chest, and probably the explanation behind alien and demon visitations.  Well sleep paralysis is associated with sleeping face-upward, and the few times it's happened to me, that's the position I was in.  I actually think my Echoes experience was kinda that, but another more classic example happened to me once too.  If anybody is interested in sleep paralysis, I might share that story then too... I'll have to think about it though... haha...... tongue

Hi Vik, interesting post. I can relate to everything you've said. I have had a "Incubus" visitation, that included a paralysis.... a heavy weight on my chest. It lasted, what felt like a minute.... and then it left, suddenly. It freaked me out...

I don't listen to music in the dark, I play, jam and compose in the dark!
The darkness is really helpful to focus on the music and to be creative.

Also I'm more creative if I'm sleepy... lol

Now the nights are drawing in in the northern hemisphere it's time for a bit of darkness listening. Try Clapton's Edge of Darkness from the 24 Nights CD. It's very atmospheric and gives me a real chill down the spine with the strings from the majestic National Philharmonic Orchestra swirling around the room. Some of the best guitar playing on this CD is on this instrumental. I'm looking forward to a similar spine tingling experience with Django when the RAH CD comes out.  big_smile

Oh yeah, I never did share my other sleep paralysis story, did I?  hmm

Well, no time right now... I stayed up all night like a nut, and even though I'm still not tired, I NEED to try get some sleep, because tonight's gonna be a real late one (Ryan Montbleau Band with the Miz/Skursky Duo at the River Street Jazz Cafe near Wilkes-Barre).

Plus I gotta be in just the right mood to tell that one... might need a few drinks or something to get up the nerve!  tongue

A cute article in the local rag this morning gives this recommendation by our former Chief of Police and now Mayor Sanders, a closet Rock fan. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly. The group is being inducted to our local Arts Hall of Fame and he's doing the intro. (they're from San Diego) Turns out he has  drum sticks and the album autographed by the band. Lava Lamp optional.

Wooders, the first album I got into as a spotty teenager was Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. I used to listen to it through my earphones in my bedroom (so I wouldn't disturb the rest of the family), with the light off.
It wasn't long before I was listening to 'Echoes' in similar situation, but in an "elevated" state of mind (if you know what I mean). Fantastic!!
I think listening to any good music in the dark is a great way to focus properly on the music itself. It's a revelation to hear parts in the songs you normally miss while listening in 'everday' situations. I would say that wearing good quality 'phones enhances this even more.
Classical music, instrumentals, 'trippy' music (like Floyd) are all better when heard in the dark.

A prime candidate for listening sans lights is the track Dust Bowl as it's very atmospheric, particularly the beginning. The talking at the end reminds me of Robbie Robertson's "Somewhere Down The Crazy River", another song full of ambience.

Try Dust Bowl and while you're there listen to the whole album in the dark, you'll almost think Joe is somewhere in the room with you - you just can't see him. Oh hang on, he's behind the curtains.  lol
