Topic: Calling R8 and R9 owners...and all guitar geeks....

Hey all,

I need a bit of advice.  I have a wonderful R8 that just sings to me.  However when I use the neck pickup (burstbucker 1) the low end seems to be very loose.  I lower the bass control on my amp but it really doesn't help that much and then it doesn't sound so sweet ont he bridge pickup with the bass so low.  Does anyone have any experience with this issue and have any advice to help the situation?

I also have a LP Traditional with Classic 57 pups in it and I was thinking about switching the neck pickups in both guitars.  The Classic 57 has a tigher bottom end.

Help please....

Try alter the pickup height. It can have a HUGE effect on the tone.
Let us know how that works, could be a quick fix smile

Re: Calling R8 and R9 owners...and all guitar geeks....

I was always told to set the amp (Bass, Mid and Treb) to use to the neck pick up, then adjust the bridge pick ups tone control (on the guitar) to balance the bridges treble out... that way you get a more useable neck pick up....

Try changing the pickup height, and use your tone knob - roll it down to 5 - it usually tightens things up.  I leave both tone knobs on 5 all the time and then use my volume pots for more or less gain.

Re: Calling R8 and R9 owners...and all guitar geeks....

you can raise the neck pickup on the bass side a bit more than treble, but what i noticed on my 57classic pickups is that i like the pole pieces a bit high on the pickup, i raise them up and lower the pickup, this helps in giving me the right bass and mid tones i wanted but at the same time keep the pickup from getting muddy if it was to get too close to the strings.

in this pick ^^ you can see i have the bridge pickup at a tilt where it sits higher on the bass side, i did that to add more bass to my bridge, because it sounded a bit too bridge with it flat, you can do the same, and also raise the pole pieces so the neck pup wont get too muddy

here's a closer shot for the neck pickup ^^, you can see that i have the pole pieces at an arc that will follow the bridge and neck radius. so fine tunings help change the sound of a pickup.

if all fails and you are still unhappy with the pickups you can go the aftermarket route,  i got my self a set of Throbak limites pickups, my hole setup changed on height and pole pieces as well.

i have the bridge pickup sitting flat with the pole pieces higher, and the neck pickup sinks in more than my 57classic pup. but the pole pieces are higher as well. which isnt all that clear in that shot.

its all a matter of principle...

Thanks guys...but my pickups are already very close to the strings..maybe my description of the looseness of the bass isn't quite right.  When I hit say an A bar chord or B...I get a farty buzz out of the amp.  The farty buzz is definitely coming from the E and A strings (mostly the E string).  There is no fret buzz that I can find anywhere...but that farty buzz drives me nuts...almost sounds like a torn speaker but it isn't ciz it doesn't do that with my other LP.

sounds like you might have too much bass, try backing the pickup a bit and raise the pole pieces and see if that helps. also try a different brand of strings on that particular guitar.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: Calling R8 and R9 owners...and all guitar geeks....

Ok time for an update....

I lowered the neck pickup a bit and it had a positive result.  That farty buzz seemed to have disappeared for the most part.  Still need some more tweaking.  I think I am going to change the strings and have a set-up done.  I noticed a little fret buzz on the A string.

After I made the adjustment and was happier with the sound, I decided to A/B my Traditional with the '57's and the R8 with the BB's.  The '57's were clearer and smoother than the BB's especially in the neck position.  I also noticed that the BB1 was a little hotter than the BB2 in the bridge of the R8.  Weird I know but I am going to A/B them again in my band's rehearsal room...better than my bedroom.  The '57 Classic plus is very sweet.  Now I am wondering if I should switch the pickups between the two guitars.  Also thinking about re-doing the Traditional to '50's wiring and see what that does.  With 1 guitar being darker and the other brighter, it gives me options as to which one to play for certain songs...so that goes against switching the pups....UUUGGHHHH the dilemna!!!!

Any suggestions????
