Topic: Got a favorite rock radio station?

I got to thinking about my travels through out the USA.....when I get to a new city I always look for the best FM radio stations I can find.....always love the old rock music from the mid 60s to the 70s....my friend who listens to exclusively punk rock calls me grandpa....the best I've ever heard when it comes to "Classic Rock" is located in Modesto, Calif, the station is called "The Hawk 104.1".....this station can pull up some of the most obscure rock/blues songs that you have nearly forgotten because they get such little play time on many stations......below is the link of the station, who by the way advertised the heck out of JB when he came to Modesto a few years back, hence the old remodeled theater whos name escapes me right now had a big marquee.....large letters

                       Joe Bonamassa tonight
                           SOLD OUT!!

Do any of you out there got some stations you really like, and maybe a link to it, because "Grandpa" would love to take a listen to it smile

P.S.....I know that many of you think FM radio is crap, I for one dont.....so how bout throwing this old dog a bone cool

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

'Whispering Bob' lives on? All those great whispered conversations on OGWT... big_smile

Planetrock or our Dutch Arrow Classic Rock. When I'm in the US we never have the radio on, only cds. Except when we were in an old s&*#box Honda, then I listened to 'The Bay' because I couldn't find anything better in that part of Maryland.

But what I really love about driving distances across country in the US is that you can find a different decent FM station more or less every 20-30 miles, one after the other. Way cool. cool

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Speaking of US stations, I like WZLX and KCDX. But I prefer UK's Planet Rock. Anyway I can't get any of these when I'm driving so my first choice is Classic 21, a rock & pop public radio in Belgium. There's a bit too much pop and french music but it's ok since they have some great shows. I'll try to have them speak about Black Rock around the release date big_smile

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Gotta agree with Shred on "The Hawk", it's the only station you can get outside of Yosemite where I've been spending a considerable amount of time working the past year or more. I've been listening to them for many years, but when I'm home in the Bay Area they fade in & out. Shred, I believe they are based in Manteca, not far from Modesto. In the Bay Area all the great pioneering FM stations are long gone such as KMPX, the old KSAN when they were @ 94.9, KOME from San Jose(the KOME spot on your dial), the old KZAP in Sacto., KRQR 97.3 S.F., and the best one of all KFAT from Monterey County. Nowadays I choose from the lesser of 3 evils KFOG 104.5/SF, KSAN 107.7/SF, those 2 are sister stations along with KNBR AM/Sports talk/SF owned by Cumulus Broadcasting, KSEG/Sacto., and the new kid on the block KKSF 103.7/SF. KFAT had a format like nothing I've listened to anywhere else around the country in my travels. There's a resonable facsimile called KPIG in the same Monterey area which can be streamed online. The best way to describe them is alternative alternative radio, check 'em out online. My favorite listening is on XM/Sirius, "Deep Tracks". They play cuts you haven't heard in decades and there's always surprises like yesterday they played a cover of The Yardbirds Shapes of Things by The Allman Joys back when they were just Duane & Gregg on guitars and a bass player and drummer who didn't make it to the ABB. That's diggin' pretty deep.

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Definitely Planetrock. We are a bit starved of decent rock music stations in the UK

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

As much as I love classic rock I can only handle the format for short periods at a time:

1) Stairway To Heaven
2) Free Bird
3) Aqualung
4) Stairway To Heaven
5) Free Bird
6) Auqalung
7) Stairway...

Ok a bit of an exaggeration but you get the idea. I find myself listening more and more to AM talk radio. When I want music I just play CDs or my iPod.

Man, you've hit the nail on the head there Stu. I've been after a "Classic Rock" station in Milwaukee for a couple of years now trying to get them to play Joe's music. Their contention is that they are classic Rock, but even their program director acknowleges how great of an artist Joe is. They also consider something new from the likes of the Stones or Tom Petty as "Classic Rock" too. Frustrates the heck out of me; their listeners are missing so much not having the likes of Joe and others on their station.

And yet, there is another station in Milwaukee that plays all sorts of music. They even have an afternoon Blues Drive where you never know what they will play. I've heard Joe played on there many times along with other artists too many to name. Granted, some of the other radio air time they have is devoted to music that I'm not fond of, but it's the variety that makes this one special. wink

thanks Stu. can you tell me , if there was a station that played classic rock and new rock in the classic style, do you think you would listen to it more, or stick with the AM talk?

Probably not, if the station had a narrow playlist and primarily featured only the better known songs from the band/era and with frequent repeats. Now if there was a true, "Deep Cuts" classic rock station here, with a format more along the lines of the old AOR stations of the 70's, I'd listen for sure!

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Jane , it was great. I remember listening to stations like WTOS and WZMF and they would play deep cuts from artists. For example, you'd hear songs from Hendrix that you never heard anywhere else. You could listen for a month straight and never hear the same song twice. AND, there were a lot less commericals. So much now is all about money, that you keep hearing the same crap over and over.

To be honest, one of the few shows that I listen to on that Classic Rock station now is their morning show and it's almost all talk, but at least it's funny.

Re: Got a favorite rock radio station?

Oh yeah. Wolfman Jack. Socal am radio played it all. Cruising to the Oscar's drive in and listening to the Wolfman on the Mighty 1090. 100KW just over the border in Tijuana and it could be received at night all the way to Seattle. Those were the days! Call in a request (on the pay phone!) and dedicate it to your sweetie. smile

X-E-R-B! Can you dig it baby!!! Nobody did it like the Wolfman. I remember cruisin' around on hot summer nights with the Wolfman crankin' on the AM dashboard radio. After sundown he came in loud and clear here in the Bay Area.
