Re: single coil sized humbucker

I've tried Seymour duncan little 59's before and liked thoses.  Bare in mind that a humbucker pickup that small won't sound like a  full sized one though.  It was to my disappointment to learn that part of a strats sound is that its not sampling as much string as a full sized humbucer (about a 1/2 inch compaired to 2 inches) so part of that twang that fender has is the smaller string sample.  Take a P-90 it sounds like a gibson full and powerful, but its a single coil.  Fender might uses the same amount of windings as say gibson but they travel up rather then out.  This is why they have about the same power when you measure their output.  That being said you can get some pretty big sounds out of strat sized humbuckers.  Good luck!

Nic-

If you happen to read this, are the lil killers able to get a nice creamy sound? I'll probably use a push-pull pot so I can also get a single coil sound as well ... I youtubed them and most of the videos are people using a strat to play metal, it'll be cool to have that on tap, as sometimes i mess around with some thrashy stuff, but a majority of my playing is rock/blues and dont need that heavy of a tone.

Thanks,
Logan

Re: single coil sized humbucker

well, they will be hot sounding.

I had it only in the bridge position. It'll work great in all positions. They are sort of like Joe Barden pu's. I was able to roll back on the tone control and get some pretty sweet sounds. And pretty noiseless as well. I used a 1 meg pot to drive it hard, so if you want a creamier tone I'd stick with the standard 250k pots. The higher k pickup, the hotter but also darker sounding pickup. The higher k volume pot, the hotter (and brighter) it will drive the pickup.

Ultimately if you're concerned about a heavy metal sound, you might want to get three of the lowest measurement. I think I got the medium one and it was still pretty hot. I think the lowest measurement was around 10k - I think that'd work great.

Nic-

I continued my research today and found that a Dimarzio Pro Track might better suit my playing... its supposed to be sort of like a mid output humbucker, almost a PAF in a single coil size, its really warm and fat, and is 4 lead so it has the ability to run series or parallel. Thanks for the quick response though!!!

make sure you listen to samples instead of read the bio on it. Marketing departments know what kind of buzzwords pickup buyers want to hear. Also look up reviews on http://harmonycentral.com
