Topic: best fuzz pedal?

Hey all,

I'm currently working on finishing up my pedal board and am on the market for a fuzz. The only catch is, it has to be small. My board isnt really all that big, and is filling up fast. I know i could go and buy a new one, but I just got this one! Anyway, I will be very appreciative for a point in the right direction.

Thanks,

Logan

Re: best fuzz pedal?

Depends what kind of fuzz you want, but would highly recommend the Gaspedals Carb -- Joe used have one on his board. Best pedal period I've owned (more here from my blog):

Re: best fuzz pedal?

I guess that rules out a fuzzface, those things are huge!  You could check out the little Big Muff if size is really an issue.  I recently picked up a Fulltone Octafuzz on the cheap and it sounds incredible.  You get a huge fat fuzz and the bonus switchable upper octave sound.  I usually use it for fuzz only though.  If you have the $$$ the Analog Man Sunface will probably suit your needs the best as they are even smaller than an MXR Dynacomp!  They are suppose to be killer sounding.

Re: best fuzz pedal?

For anyone else wondering, Lance Lopez told me via facebook that he uses OX Fuzz, its compact with a huge sound. They run about $175 with $20 shipping.

Kissfanps reported he was emailing with Jay.  He said that he is not making pedals right now, but will continue in the future with a cheaper Carb Pedal in a smaller housing.

The Carb is great! but I still want an Old School Fuzz

Re: best fuzz pedal?

Size not considered, I fired up my old UK Reisse Arbiter England Fuzzface and it sounded fantastic.  It's just huge, warm, and totally oldschool.  The Octafuzz it a little brighter, "spittier", and has way more fuzz on tap.  Also, if you are into fuzz but can't seem to get them to work for you check out the Fulltone Catalyst.  It's affordable, VERY compact (about the size of an OCD), extremely tweakable, and good sounding.  It can act as a decent overdrive/clean boost on the "Spark" setting and full blown fuzz on the "Flame".  Be warned though, it's a little raspy when used in front of a super clean amp.  It sounds stellar through a dirty amp though!

Re: best fuzz pedal?

Honestly brother, if you can make room, the reissue Hendrix Fuzz is amazing. I got one for Christmas....I'm normally leery of buying anything with a "name" stamped on it, but the silicon transistors in the Hendrix fuzz sound so much more warm than the germanium transistors that are in the normal dallas arbiter you can buy. Definitely worth checking out smile

Re: best fuzz pedal?

JMI Tonebender MkII - its big, but will rip your head off with a super fat fuzz thats still articulate.

Re: best fuzz pedal?

If i were you, i'd get on pedalgeek or tonefactor and do a fuzz search. You'll find some very interesting options. Both well known and obscure. Lots of choices out there for fuzzes.

I'll second that! The '69 is the perfect fuzz. IMO. Originally they sold for around $150 USD. Now if you find a good one you'll pay anywhere from $250 to $350! Should you find one make sure you use a positive pin power supply, a Fulltone FPS-2.

I'm quite partial to Marc Ahlfs at Skreddy pedals stuff. http://www.skreddypedals.com.

Check out the dennis cornell 1st fuzz. This guy built some of the originals back in the day.

Re: best fuzz pedal?

I have searched up an down for fuzzes.  Had a Z Vex Fuzz Factory which has great sounds as well as crazy ones.  Compact box and too many sounds in there which vary greatly depending on the pickup position, volume of guitar, or whatever else is in the chain ahead of it.  There are amazing tones there, but a slight bump of the knobs while switching and BAM, you are in weird land.  Great for recording however.  I also tried MI Audio GI Fuzz,  Big Muff Pi, and Fulltone Soulbender, with the last one being closest to what I was looking, but still no cigar.  In comes an underdog IMHO;  after watching several Blues Saraceno Dirty Boy pedal video demos, I saw his Tweak Fuzz demo.  I picked one up practically new for 45 dollars.  Plugged it in and BAM, there it was.  It is supposed to be a cheaper version of the Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz which costs almost 400 bones. All I got to say is that I am finally happy with my lead sound which comes from the Tweak.  Highly recommended, cheap, and not that large.
