LONDON (Reuters) – Jimi Hendrix fans will be able to hear around an hour's worth of music from their guitar hero never commercially available before when his family and Sony Commercial Music Group release a "new" album on March 8.

"Valleys of Neptune" features studio recordings dating from 1969, the year before Hendrix died in London aged 27.

"My brother Jimi was at home in the studio," said Janie Hendrix, head of Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-owned company set up to protect a legacy valued at tens of millions of dollars.

"'Valleys of Neptune' offers deep insight into his mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist.

"His brilliance shines through on every one of these precious tracks."

Valleys of Neptune will feature several songs familiar to die-hard fans from bootleg recordings, but there will also be more than 60 minutes of previously unreleased Hendrix music.

The album will include covers of Elmore James' classic "Bleeding Heart" and Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and performances of original Hendrix compositions like "Ships Passing Through The Night" and "Lullaby For The Summer."

The record is part of an early wave of re-releases of Hendrix music, with new editions of "Are You Experienced?," "Axis: Bold As Love," "Electric Ladyland" and "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" all out on the same day.

Janie Hendrix told the LA Times that the estate had enough material for "a decade's worth" of new releases, both music and video.

Hmmm.... as much as I do welcome new unreleased recordings .... I can't help thinking, the man's been dead 40 years! What's he doing.... knocking them out beyond the grave ? This is more to do with his family, keeping that steady stream of revenue going!

There is a word for that...

So, I won't be helping, keep the families bank balance healthy!

Jimi produced four albums in his short career,
And a founding member of the "27 Club"

Are you Experienced (1967)
Axis Bold As Love     (1967)
Electric Ladyland      (1968)
Band Of Gypsies      (1970)

The Hendrix name will live on forever ... whatever!

I am a cynic.... by the way!! smile

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

Hendrix was recording almost all the time.  And I mean almost ALL of the time.  A decade's worth of material is believable, so turn it all loose, it should not be about money at this point.  I am dubious IMHO about it ending up sounding too "fresh".  No matter how good Jimi was at the recording process, a lot of his stuff should be sketchy, as in not completely and / or formally composed, basically noodling a song around.  To assume it's all going to sound great would IMHO be a mistake.
But who wouldn't have an immense fascination with wanting to hear it 4 decades later and still realize he WAS from somewhere else???!!!

p.s.-Rest assured, Joe Bonamassa may have not been intimidated at all playing with Eric Clapton, but he would've gulped half his throat down if faced with hanging onstage with Jimi, even if Jimi was cold stone sober.

When I read, " a decade's worth of material" how many albums is that ? One, Two, three .....?

Jimi has done his best work, from 1967 - 1970
in the form, of his four albums!

And lets thank him for that!! smile

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

I'm with Rocket on this one. The recently published book "Ultimate Hendrix - An Illiustrated Encyclopedia of Live Concerts and Sessions" is reviewed in the current issue of Blues Matters and it’s clear that, like many musicians at the top of their game, Hendrix had obsessive tendencies and drove himself and others to extremes, often staying in the studio when others had left. This way he clandestinely re-worked some pieces, even playing bass and drum parts himself. Perfection was always his ultimate goal.

It is therefore quite believable that there may have been some unheard and commercially viable tracks laid down during these recording sessions. Yes, we’ve all heard Hendrix playing Sunshine of Your Love and Bleeding Heart, but the prospect of some unheard original material has whetted my appetite and until we’ve heard this CD I think it would be a mistake to write it off as purely a money making exercise.

I posted this link yesterday under main topics of Joe's new release date...if both releases end up being on March 9th, I think it would be very cool Jimi & Joe...Guitar gods extrondinare.

"Hendrix left a wealth of pristine studio and live tapes."

"There's a strong vault, a lot of live stuff, that we have yet to tap into," says Kramer, marveling at what the storied ax man might have achieved had he not died in 1970 at age 27."

The details here say 12 new previously unreleased and recorded mainly in '69.

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

It will be interesting. I recall buying a 8-Track of Hendrix that had "Wipe the Sweat" Parts 1, 2 and 3 on it, and it was awful. But it's been a while (obviously, since it was an 8-Track LOL). Could be that if I went back now and listened to it I might appreciate it more, but I sure didn't care for it at the time.

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

I'd give it a listen just for the sake of hearing something different. Jimi died at age 27, what if he had lived? Interesting thought to ponder....

I have a good friend who was stationed in Florida when he was in the Navy. He and a bunch of guys went to see Hendrix one night, but since the club was soldout, no seats were available. The venue added seats to the stage and so, he was "on stage" with Jimi during his performance. Can you imagine? cool

Pretty sure he was alive when he made the recordings (unless I am missing something). It has been a known fact for a long time that his sister (I think) had a lot of recordings from him.  Somebody has finally persuaded a release.

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

I say let's hear it. The sad thing is his best work was not even completed yet. The songs on First Rays Of The New Rising Sun are the best stuff he did. Ezy Rider, Freedom, Dolly Dagger, Roomful Of Mirrors. What songs. So, if there is stuff on there that approaches that, I'm up for it. big_smile

I think with artists like Hendrix, you really want to hear what went into the creative process for him. See where he started with this stuff. I'm very interested in it.

And of course it's about money. If it didn't make money, they wouldn't release it. But that doesn't mean it's not worthy.

Exactly! By the way this is being built up, I would guess that these tracks are likely to be pretty good. If they are, they'll sell. If they're not, they won't. Still time for cynicism then.

Re: New Hendrix CD of unreleased material out 8th March 2010

Here's a question to ponder. Who's got the most posthumous material Jimi or Tupac? Material never seems to keep coming from both these guys. Lots of bands crank out dozens of tracks in the studio when they work on a new album, but then only the best dozen or so make the cut. If this stuff was truly worthy you would think it would have been released long ago. I'll give it a listen, but probably won't invest.
