Topic: My top 10 blues albums

For me it would be

Led Zep II
Fleetwood Mac in Chicago
Savoy Brown A Step Further
Allman Brothers Live Filmore East
Cooper, Bloomfield, Stills Super Session
BB King Indianola Mississippi Seeds
Stevie Ray Vaughn All of them.
Robben Ford Talk To Your Daughter

In somewhat chronilogical order.

Re: My top 10 blues albums

Good list Jim, how come you and Joe both count 11 as 10! lol

Here's mine. These are my blues ones, blues rock would be a different list:

Fleetwood Mac- Fleetwood Mac (the dustbin)
Howlin Wolf - The London Sessions
Freddie King- Burglar
Muddy Waters - Hard As
Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland and Robert Cray - Showdown! (essential)
Steve Ray Vaughan - In Step
North Mississippi Allstars - Shake Hands With Shorty
Ian Siegal - Swagger
Tommy Castro - Painkiller
Sean Costello - We Can Get Together

So far Peter Green is the only artist in these lists and the one by Joe! smile

Well, this thread doesn´t seem to suffer from  overcrowdedness - so it might be wise to add one more. I think about Ray Charles: The Right Time. But it might be not considered as blues?? I think I´ve to join your blindman forum - what about they are blind, by the way?-  to take some lessons in proper definitions.

1. Muddy Waters - Hard Again (always works for me)
2. Anything by ZZ Top - If Billy ain't playin the blues I don't know who is
3. Led Zep II
4. Jeff Beck Group - Truth (what a Supergroup should sound like)
5. Anything by SRV (I do beleive I was a Texan in a previous life)
6. Johnny Winter - Guitar Slinger (Great "comeback"album)
7. Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street (If you don't have this shame on you)
8. Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore East (one of the best live albums ever)

Suprised to see so many listings of what I would consider newer acts and cd's.

Re: My top 10 blues albums

Let's see what I can come up with:

Albert Collins - Ice Pickin'

What a player. And such a unique style. Plus, I love how his songs can be really funny. Honey Hush is a great example. Criminally underrated in the annals of blues history. Dare say, I love him more than any of the 3 Kings.
http://www.amazon.com/Ice-Pickin-Albert … amp;sr=8-3

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand The Weather

Nuff said. Stevie showed he was more than a Texas shuffling fool when he released this. You've got Hendrixian flourishes (the title track, Voodoo Chile), you've got jazz (Stang's Swang), you've got blues in all its forms (Honey Bee, Tin Pan Alley) including probably his catchiest shuffle outside of Pride And Joy: Cold Shot. This is the one one that got me into Stevie.
http://www.amazon.com/Couldnt-Weather-S … amp;sr=1-1

John Lee Hooker - Hooker box set

Four discs full of the boogie king. If you don't like the Hook, you are not a blues fan. You're simply posing. My personal favorite: I'm Bad Like Jesse James.
http://www.amazon.com/Hooker-John-Lee/d … amp;sr=1-1

Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign

Albert is just so cool. This album, a collection of singles, is just cool. Since a lot of these songs are short,  there's not a lot of expanded guitar breaks, but that really doesn't matter. King's in fine form, and is backed by Booker T & The MG's. Essential.
http://www.amazon.com/Born-Under-Sign-A … amp;sr=1-1

Eric Clapton - From The Cradle

Yeah, they're all covers, but Clapton plays with a lot of fire here. I especially love Groaning The Blues and Motherless Child.
http://www.amazon.com/Cradle-Eric-Clapt … amp;sr=1-1

B.B. King - Live In Japan

An overlooked effort. B.B. absolutely smokes here. In my opinion, way better than the Regal.
http://www.amazon.com/Live-Japan-B-B-Ki … amp;sr=1-1

Buddy Guy - Skin Deep

One of Buddy's strongest albums, I believe. Just listen to the outro solo on Everytime I Sing The Blues.
http://www.amazon.com/Skin-Deep-Buddy-G … amp;sr=1-1

Joe Bonamassa - Had To Cry Today

Still my second favorite, John Henry's my first. I'll never forget hearing Never Make Your Move Too Soon and being blown away.

Johnny Winter - Third Degree

An album Johnny did for Alligator in the 1980s. Just some great playing here with some cool songs. My favorites are Mojo Boogie and I'm Good
http://www.amazon.com/Third-Degree-John … amp;sr=1-1

Muddy Waters - His Best 1947 To 1955

My introduction to Muddy. It's crazy to think how many classic blues songs he was responsible for. This is out of print I believe, but you can download it.
http://www.amazon.com/His-Best-1947-Mud … amp;sr=1-1

Howlin' Wolf - His Best

First time I heard Howlin' Wolf, I didn't know what to think. This guy is intense! I believe it's out of print, but The Definitive Collection has the same track listing.
http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Collec … amp;sr=1-1

Re: My top 10 blues albums

Looking at the lists and reminding my problems with it shows how difiicult it is to differentiate between blues and bluesrock. Of course it´s a rather academic question but maybe worth to explore a bit more - if it´s not done already here.

And such has been the debate since Clapton plugged his Les Paul into his Marshall on the Beano album. Or since the Stones covered old blues songs. It's best to just go with your gut. If you feel like it is the blues, it is - to you. big_smile
