When using baffles with miced up cabs, the people in front won't get overwhelmed by your guitarsound blasting out of your cab and you can get the best out of your tube amp with higher volumes. The sound engineer has an easier job because there's less noise on stage and because of that you'll propably be hearing your monitor mix clearer and better too. Other than that, I see no benefit's for using a baffle without micing the amps through PA. It's like putting a massive wall right in front of your cab, makes no sense to me. Where should the sound go? But he, maybe I'm wrong, I've no experience with it.

EDIT: Just read NPB_EST.1979's post above. I think he's right because he has used it that way, I'm sorry!

Depends on teh cab you are using, trust me a 4 x 12 needs a baffle with or without PA, otherwise its ear bleeding stuff to the front rows, even at low volume.

Good to hear from you, Martin.  Thanks Nic.  Yeah, A terry cloth towel hung over the face of a HotRod Deluxe will take death ray out of the mix and keep the GP halfway mollified. 

And Jesco:  I have wrapped a cable around more than one sound engineer's neck and tossed him from the crow's nest... lol ... apology very cool on your part.

    I found a Plastics company here in town, and am going to go over to their factory and see what they have available, and if they'll sell it retail, to me. I will also see if they have the clear plastic (rubber?) "Hinges" like I've seen on the ClearSonic brand shields.
    If they do have the "Hinges", I will report back their contact info for you all.

    So, un-mic'd at a gig works well, too?

Everything you need to build them... hinges and the glue.  It's not to bad on the pocket either.  Thats where I purchased my hinges from.  Local Home Depot/Lowes/Hardware store should have a sheet of plexi.  The Plexiglass isn't cheap though and use 1/4".

I use a circular saw to cut plexi-glass, but keep in mind I am a professional. Home depot sells 1/2 size (4'x4') and 1/4 size (2'x4') sheets of plexi as well and would maybe cut it to your specs for a small fee. I also like to round the corners, a belt or orbital sander works nice for this. If you don't have access to or aren't confidant in your ability to use these power tools safely (I'm talkin maiming yourself, a finger, an eye - not cool) just have a carpenter friend do it for you.

  Tap Plastics is for sure the way to go for the hinge.

It's been a while since the first post but I couldn't resist an update.

My band finally emerged from the rehearsal room and got down to gigging last Saturday. Thought you might like to see my 'poor man's rig' in action.

Yes, there it is - the TT combo and the Roland Cube - it don't get much more modest than that. I wouldn't begin to pretend it sounds like a 'big rig', nor does it really emulate JB himself BUT the sound is extraordinary and I have complete control over the balance of dirty/clean and how the FX get mixed in. I can say that without the baffle, it would probably have sounded pretty thin and in that venue (very little soft furnishings), some of the audience might have preferred to be somewhere else. But with the baffle, potential harshness is banished and the guitar seems to be coming from everywhere at once. No 'death rays' here. I think the overall sound of the band was amazing. Because of the baffle, I didn't have a problem distinguishing how my guitar was being heard in the 'mix', even though I was not going through our little Mackie board.

The point is that a baffle totally transforms the guitarists ability to hear and control his or her sound in relation to the rest of the band in small venues, even when not mic'd. Or rather, PARTICULARLY when not mic'd. You get a much closer idea of what your audience is actually hearing. Highly recommended.
