Topic: Best low wattage tube amp?

BUT HERE's THE CATCH:

5 watts isn't loud enough to cut through during band practice. So I'd ask what the best tube amp lower than 30 watts?

I'm expecting to get rid of my Epi Valve jr because it's not loud enough for band practice.
I've been looking at F'ers and the marshall haze 15 head.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

There's tons out there now, but the Budda Superdrive 18 is one that I'm familiar with. Very loud for 18 watts, cut through like a knife, cleans up great with volume knob even with the gain maxed. Killer rock tone for about 1K or under used. Great master volume.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

If your drummer isn't too loud, I love for grab n' go the Fender Tweed Blues Jr - I get plenty of volume from 15-watts of tube.  I personally use in this format: Keeley Katana, Dumkudo or SOV2 OD pedal and T-Rex Replica and works good for clean to edgy blues tone- for $500.00 you can't beat it.  If you want discerning tone, I would get a Two Rock Jet Sig Amp at 20-watts - about $3K.   Another option is a Marshall re-issue 18-watt amp - I believe a Bluesbreakers, careful though, I've heard they've had some problems.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

If you can swing the price this is the best low wattage Fender for a band practice type deal.  Its 22 watts.  I've tried tons of fender amps out and if I was in the market to buy one this would be it.  I've tried it out with Strats, Teles, PRS's, Gibsons, and even cheaper then cheap Epiphones and have yet to get a bad tone out of this baby.  Seriously if you want distortion turn it up.  You can push a tube amp as loud as it can go as long as you don't add boost type pedals in.  If you add a boost to an amp that is at its max you'll blow it.  Blues Jr's are good too, and I personally like the Pro Jr better if your going for distortion.  Keep in mind though if your drumer would just muffle that bass drum your practicing will get much quiter.  We built a lexan sheild for our drumer with some unused items at work and its crazy what all we can hear now during and after a practice.  BTW our drummer is the loudest drummer I've ever played with, he's 6'3" and around 280 lbs.  He also works funiture for a living so to say he's a hard hitter is quite an understatment.  He also goes though drum heads like I do Strings (2-4 months)

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

Check out the Blackheart Handsome Devil HD... 15 FREAKING LOUD watts !!! Closer to the output of a 30 or 40 watt head really... Sounds 90% like the 2061X from Marshall and cleans up great with your volume knob...

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

Steer away from the Marshall Haze 15 head. Its bloody awful, Horrible built in effects that make the amp sound like it should be on a keyring.

I say try a Mesa 5.25 head, Its switchable, affordable and sounds great ! I had one but the reverb started to hum so off loaded it as I need good reliable reverb.

Try the mesa ! ! you wont be dissapointed and best of all it switches down to 5 w from 25.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

I'm just about to order a Ceriatone 5E3, a clone of the famous Fender Tweed Deluxe: 12 watt, one 12" speaker and two 6v6 tubes. Everyone -- from Neil Young to Billy Gibbsons -- uses them. So there must be something good about them.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

Nic, please do me a small favor and stop at Guitar Center and try out the Jet City 20 watt rig before you plunk down your hard earned cash on anything. These totally kick butt! $500 for the half stack. They have 20 & 50 watt combos coming out in the near future too.

Major Tom to ground control...

Yeah, these can be pretty awesome, if you get on with them, they'll serve you well... But you might wanna go for something a bit more costly.
Vox make the 'Nightrain', a 15 watt head, which me and my singer played. It was 'ok', but till it wasn't quite loud enough in reality, and I then tried the 40 watt (little more than 30 watts, but wait and see) Marshall DSL401. And it ROCKED, it's now my pride and joy in my live set-up, and very versatile once it 'settles in'. Like Joe, I tried using a perspex baffle in-front of it, and once you drive it to its upper limits: MAN, does it cook. I love it completely, and if it's like what you're after, I highly recomend it. The head version (think 100 watts) is what Joe uses when he hasnt got his Jubilee!

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

Well I own a TSL100 ( and a JVM410H ), and the BH15HD as well and although it's by no means as loud or as versatile as those two heads being a single channel 15 watt amp, it's really loud enough for band practice and gigs ( in a 4x12 ) and sounds really vintage "marshally" to me... Best all around deal at the moment for me if you're looking for vintage tones at a scary decent price....

Honestly I wish Marshall would come out with 30/45 watt all tube heads w/ serial loop in full size cabinets... I'd be all over that....

Here are 2 video demos I made of this little monster. incidently you can check my TSL and JVM demos from my youtube channel as well....

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

I just picked up a Egnater Renegade 212 and it sounds insane . I don't know if your looking for a combo or head but this thing rocks and has some great features , tube mix , 18 or 65 watts ,  reverb adjust for each channel , etc. I was looking into the 1974X , Rivera venus , Mesa lonestar and for the money and the sounds of these other amps I just didn't get that blown away by them especially for almost double the price . I went in leaning towards the Rebel 30 then I starting comparing it to the Renegade and I figured why not have the extra wattage for headroom etc. and then I decided why not go for the extra speaker and weight  roll and the rest is history . I've been playing it on the 18 watt setting and getting an awesome dirty blues sound . I also checked out the Haze and didn't like it at all . Good luck and thanks for always answering my posts , Paul

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

I went to guitar center today.

Among the amps I was looking at

PEAVEY Classic 30 (tweed) - Looks and plays nice.
Jet City 20 watt head - the EL 84's were in crooked
Fender blues JR. (black) - cheapest of the 3, only differences were the tubes and the speaker
Fender blues jr. (beige sides brown front) - better tubes same speaker
Fender Blues Jr hot rod (tweed) - groove tubes and jensen speaker (most expensive)
VOX Night train - expensive and heavy as heck

-So I didn't play any of these... but the more i look the more I want to play through a used Blues jr. amp. I'm not huge on Fender products (never been) but if it outplays the classic 30 I'd give it the time of day. I was eyeing up a Peavey classic 20 (15 watt all tube) amp, but it mysteriously ended early not meeting the reservce.

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

My brother has a Fuchs designer amp (about a gazillion $) and a custom shop Les Paul (about a bajillion $).  He winds up using his Blues Jr almost exclusively on small or practice gigs.  Evidently that bright Fword amp matches well with his LesPaul which is a tad dark.

Are you ignoring me? 3 bottles of salsa? big_smile

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

Dr. Z Carmen Ghia, Budda SD18, Peavey Classic 30, Fender DRRI. There are a ton more, nowadays. But, these are the ones I've seen/heard/played, and are the ones more people seem to own around here (Arkansas).

All are stellar. It just depends on the Tones you want, and the Guitars you'll be using them with.

Now, you could save a lot of $$$ and buy a nice Shure Mic, with a Mic Stand. Mic the Epi and run that through the P.A.

Early 80's 1957 U.S. Vintage Reissue Stratocaster (Surf Green)-Warmouth Soloist  Pearly Gates Neck, Pearly Gates Bridge- Larrivee D-03 (Mahogany/ Spruce)

Re: Best low wattage tube amp?

I noticed the blues JR but what about the Pro JR?  I'm serious try it out before you walk away from it.  It having 2 knobs a volume and a tone actually help it tone wise because the circuit is simple you don't draw away from the voltage.  You can seriously turn this thing wide open and get the best slide guitar tone you've ever had if you play slide.  Its also around $100 cheaper then the Blues JR same output though.  Promise me you'll at least try it before you turn your nose up to it, but you got to turn it up loud or you'll just get clean sounds.  This video is what turned me on to them.  I want one bad now.

I'd need $100 to get rid of it, and after shipping - it'd end up being the same amount as if you just went down the street and got it from guitar center. I'll probably toss it on Craigslist for a hundred bucks.

My bandmate has a pro jr and wishes it had reverb. Hence my interest in the blues jr.
