Topic: Jazz IIIs

Got a JB pick package today (SCORE!! cool ) And I'm so impressed with these picks! I was doubtful that picks could make that much of a difference, but immediately my tone changed... I was playing cleaner, and I could feel the string better when I was picking. The Jazz IIIs have a much darker sound than the picks I was using before... I love it!! I see why Joe uses them.

Re: Jazz IIIs

They are nice picks.  I've been trying them out for the last year or so...if I can only figure out how to keep 'em gripped and stable.  I have trouble keeping the tip where I want it for some reason.  To be fair, I kinda have a Love/Hate relationship with any pick these days.  The older I get the more I prefer to just use my fingers.  I do like the "dark" tone of the Jazz III's though.

+1.  Got some as well and have noticed a difference, definitely playing cleaner, I like 'em. Makes those pinch harmonics easier cool

Re: Jazz IIIs

I haven't got JB ones, but regular Jazz 3's are the same, I love em! For me, they're harder to play with as they have a sharper sound that cuts with my tone, and I've had to alter it, so every other pick I use is easier to play on. The tone is worth it, and after a few weeks, I'm used to em :> smile

Re: Jazz IIIs

The Red Jazz 3's are what I play. I also have a blue 1mm dunlop pick powder coated for grip. I have a hard time gripping the jazz 3's without them rotating. I also have a hard time paying fast at all. so they didn't help in that dept. But it's easier to pick with authority and get delicate after with a jazz 3.

Re: Jazz IIIs

Not impressed with the Jazz III.  I have an old Guitar One mag with a column in there about why these three guitarist say you should always use the Jazz III and Joe might have been one of them but I know for a fact Eric Johnson was.  So I bought a bag of these things a dozen or so.  I tried them for a year and hated it.  Same reason everyone else is talking about the point wants to move on me.  I was spending more time trying to learn how to hold the pick then I was actually playing guitar.  Gave them to a buddy of mine and as soon as he tried it out he was in love, of course he was a metal head and wanted to play fast.

Re: Jazz IIIs

i use the Jazz III XL pics, they come in Red only and they are the same shape of a regular Jazz III but in a size of a real pick, they are the best pick i have ever used, i also have the small Jazz III in black, but dont play with them much.

So the normal Jazz III's are unreal pics? roll lol
First I also played the Jazz III XLs because I played Dunlop Tortex pics before and was fearing those small pics a bit. But after I got used to the small Jazz IIIs I loved them. More than any other pics.

Re: Jazz IIIs

Been using them quite a while now noticed an almost instant increase in picking accuracy, however maybe because they kept slipping I dunno but I tend to hold them sideways on and use the rounded edge raher than then pointy edge to pick...

Re: Jazz IIIs

If you have an issue with them slipping (like I do), try the Ultex or Tortex Jazz III's.  Neither of them slip at all.

Re: Jazz IIIs

I just tried the Jazz III XL plecs. I like them.
Let's see what I'm thinking of them after the rehearsals.

Pretty cool idea. Now I just have to wear out or lose my 2 dozen JB jazz III picks I got for christmas!  yikes Should be ready to try these in about 20 years...

Re: Jazz IIIs

Just get a piece of sandpaper and glue it on the Jazz III, then there won't be any problem like slipping out of your hand!

Re: Jazz IIIs

Or you can do like me and stick to what you like.

Re: Jazz IIIs

Never tried the Jazz III picks.  Are they tortex?  I find tortex picks too difficult to manage in my fingers.  I prefer the dunlop derlin picks, 1.5 mm.  You can rub them with some ultra fine (1,000 Grit) sand paper to rough them up and increase grip-ability.  -S
