Topic: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

I was just curious whether you guys like the 50s fat neck or the 60s slim neck? I don't like the 60s nearly as much as the 50s, but I play my 60s neck more.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

I only own a '58 RI. I have fairly small hands, and before i got the '58, I thought that I liked the 60's profile better because it fit in my hands better. Maybe I just got used to the 50's profile, but I love the feeling of that chunky neck in my hands, and its not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be to play.

Thanks,
Logan

Same here, the '58 profile felt a little more stable and I think also helps fatten the tone up just a hair.  The '60s do play very fast and comfortably but for big bends and diggin' in I like the late '50s profile myself. smile

I enjoy the slim necks from the 70's as a matter of fact. But if I were to buy a new LP, I'd try em both - and probably end up with the skinnier neck, sounds like that's the 60's.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

I was in the same boat as you with smaller hands.  I was worried about using the chunkier neck while I was looking for my '58.  I did a lot of reseach and skope to  a lot of music stores and asked them to measure the neck for me.  The lead guitarist in my band has a '59 which has a fairly thick neck..actually too thick for me.  My Les Paul Traditional is a little thinner than his '59.  I was able to fine a '58 with a thinner neck than both but it is thicker than any '60 neck I tried.  I have to admit that the little extra thcikness of my '58 over the '60's neck works so well for me.  It just comes down to how does it feel for you.  With the '58 the neck just sits in my hand just right...just feel natural....

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

My size 11 hands tend to cramp up when playing slim necks(like my strat), so I definitely prefer the 50's necks on the R8 and JBLP.
I'm not a shredder though and like to grab all the way around the neck.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

Prefer the slim necks of my 70s customs.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

Smaller hands - fat neck for me.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

When I was looking for a new Paul I thought I wanted a slim 60's neck played a lot of them and liked them, but when I played my Traditional Plus which is thicker than the 60's but not a 50's neck I was in love. The tone just seem much Fatter with the thicker neck espically playing bends and I couldn't believe how easy it was to play. I had a Studio with a 50's neck and hated it.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

I personally enjoy both of my 50s and 60s necks, but I find myself more and more enjoying the thicker necks. It just seems like theres more space and the tone is a bit thicker and, if I may,  more like the 1000 pound violin tone...and I've also noticed that on my 60's neck LP, it has a smaller nut and the strings are closer together making descending 16th notes and things like that harder to play.

Same here!!

Others who knew how much I liked my Clapton Strat neck told me I'd hate the 50's neck... They were wrong .. Now I don't like the 60s neck LPs

Baseball bats for me. Like a true '59 neck. The big necks on the '59 ES335s are killer too.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

I have an old Les Paul 60's Classic.  The new Les Paul Standards with a 60's neck feel bigger to me.  I always felt the Classic was geared towards metal music because the neck feels shallow and thin where 60's standards feel more rounded like a C shape. My Classic feels like a thinU shape flat in the center and rouned on the edges.  A few years back I played a 58' reissue don't ask me if it was a R8,R9 or whatever they have.  I know that the R8's are suposed to be the bigger necks and all the R reffers to is the neck size.  Anyway's I hate the my Classic's neck I bought it when I wanted a les Paul and had been playing for all of 2 years and didn't know what I wanted.  I settled for the First Les Paul I had ever seen and got a really great price for it, but other then the looks of it's beautiful plain top I hated its sound and playing ablity.  I had an SG standard and it's got a much faster neck with its rounded profile then my Classic.  The 58' Reissue was going to be my main choice of guitar for a Gibson.  It was a burbon burst and the neck was very chuncky but which I like for playing chords on.  It kind of slowed me down on leads too which was actually a good thing because I tend to over play things and have to force myself to use the less is more mind set.  I never bought the guitar, life interuppted that for a while, but someday I'll get my hands on another burbon burst Plain top 58' Reissue Les Paul (my dream guitar)  Maybe not for 20 years but if they make em' when I get around to it having the money it will be mine!

Small hands...  I love the 58 RI neck.

Re: 50s or 60s neck on your Les Pauls?

i used to own a tele before i got my les paul, and it had a slim neck on it, when i was shopping for an LP i wanted one with a thin neck, up untill i found the LP that i have now it had one of the thickest necks that i every played, but the guitar and tone sounded so good that i said ill make myself like the thick neck, and after owning the guitar for a few years now, i gotten used to 50's necks that i cant stand slim necks, i own a taylor T5 custom with a really slim neck that i dont play it as much because my hand cramps up when i use it, its a great sounding guitar but the LP neck is just way better.
