Re: Guitar players' pet peeves

  • Moving gear off a dark stage... running your hand along the back of the head to check no cables are plugged in because you are too lazy to get a torch... touching the pins on the power input and catching a nice shock.

  • Oh and getting a string up under your fingernail when restringing.. that hurts like ####.

  • Trying to find enough power points to run your rig.

  • Outdoor gigs.

  • Sound engineers that think they know more about everything than you do and aren't afraid to make sure you know they do.

  • Trying to rig a stage in a pub where the pool table normally is. When they have kindly shoved the table to the side and stacked furniture on it. Leaving you with just enough space to all squeeze round the drums.

  • The old guy at the end of the gig that calls you "son" and offers career advice.

  • The old guy at the end of the gig who "taught Mick Fleetwood drums" and then follows you around while you try your best to pack up your gear and ignore him.

  • The old guy at the pub in the middle of nowhere who "saw Hendrix here in '68" and thinks you are the next big thing. He'll sign you up for just 10% of your future earnings. "Oh by the way I used to work for EMI".

  • Sleeping in the van because the designated driver got drunk. Again.

  • Falling over onstage.

  • Gear sharing. Really annoying stuff ALWAYS gets nicked, the crap guitar stand you bought cos the last one was stolen.. the little bits of velcro to keep your cables neat..

  • The guy that beats the **## out of your mic stand just because he thinks it looks good and he didn't buy it.

  • Driving halfway up the country to play to three people.

  • Forgetting to bring your slide and having to use a bottle or a lighter.

...il prolly think of more later i expect!

Re: Guitar players' pet peeves

Back in my day we got paid by admission. The money we got was what people paid for admission to get into the bar. Sometimes it would be the bar owners bouncers working the door, other times we would get a "friend" who would work the door for us. Most times the door man let his and the owners friends in for free. People also would be let in through the back. I'm sure we always got less than what was actually taken in at the door, or..... Yep we pretty much played for free. hmm

I did a gig 2 weeks ago that was "a percentage of the bar takings" apart from gagging when I was told I had to do this gig (which by the way will never happen again) I thought it was rediculous how can you trust someone? specially where money is concerned.... Anyhow I spent £30 at the bar and after we had been paid and the money had been split down we ended up with £20 each (£100 between 5) I was gutted specially considering it cost in petrol money to get there... A normal gig would of been 2-3x that hmm

There are hundreds of those idiots on Facebook, dissing one artist or another. When they start slagging Joe that gets personal!

Yup, I always showed up on time, SOBER, and knowing my parts with gear in good working order,  never understood why it shouldn't it be treated as a job.  The BEST job you could ever have.  Maybe I have just worked enough crappy jobs to know the difference.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

I've heard that in some big cities that's all some musicians craigslist ads are is slagging other bands. I ask "why?"

and since he just ripped off Paganini,  Is Paganini the real father of Blues?  lol

Re: Guitar players' pet peeves

No, but here's a real mind mess. Yngwie taught God how to play guitar, so really, and if God gave rock and roll to us (as KISS preached) then wasn't it really Yngwie that invented rock and roll? And since rock and roll is LIFE, didn't Yngwie create life? And if Yngwie created life, then isn't Yngwie really God? yikes tongue That would mean Clapton is a no-good poser. lol

Hey Deezer - thats a bit pots and black kettles dude!

(just pullin' yer wotnot wink )

I'll give you my pet peeve - singers who come in a couple of bars early - or late. And then look at the rest of the band as if it's their fault when it all falls apart. Also singers (yeah - the same one) who goes leaping about the stage and knocks your elbow just as you're launching into a solo. roll

And that spikey string changing encounter............ ouch!

Ian

Please be in no doubt that this is the REAL ME! Beware imposters........................

Don't even get me started on Singers!  Ours has never lifted anything heavier than a microphone.  Joe's got it easy, he just has to deal with himself.
