Topic: Your top 5 albums 2009...

Is it only me or has this year been immensely productive music-wise?
2009 - I see myself running to the record store constantly to get xy´s new album, I see a vast number of Amazon CD packages arriving at my dad´s place, I see my roomie moan about the constant flood of new band´s names he has to remember .... tons of good shows, great festivals, cool DVDs. I think it´s been a good year. smile

Now we all know that the Grammys are probably infiltrated by the same mafia that´s responsible for the success of 'Rolling Stone' hyped bands, Blues Award nominations and such ... so please let me hear your personal nominees for the top 5 album releases 2009.

And my winners are ....

1. The Ballad of John Henry - Joe Bonamassa
2. By a thread - Gov´t Mule
3. Already Free - The Derek Trucks Band
4. White Sugar - Joanne Shaw Taylor
5. Astral Weeks live at the Hollywood Bowl - Van Morrison

I guess some of those will appear in other lists too ... but I´m sure I´ve forgotten something that needs to be in the top 5 as well. It´s your turn now ...

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

I'm not sure I have spent as much as 2008 on CD's or downloads, but I've certainly been to more gigs, especially in the first half of the year. So, musically, you are right Eva, it has been good year.

I work on the basis of 'heavy rotation', so my top 5 would run out as follows

1. TBOJH - JB
2. God & Guns - Lynyrd Skynyrd
3. White Sugar - JST
4. Everyday Demons -The Answer
5. Official Bootleg - Ian Parker

More of the same please in 2010!

PS - Oli needs to release something new and soon!

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

It's been a good year for albums but an exceptional year for concerts.  My favourite albums released this year, in no particular order, are:-

1.  Chickenfoot - Chickenfoot
2.  W.E.T.   -   W.E.T.
3.  TBOJH  -  Joe Bonamassa
4.  Skyscraper  -  Tall Stories
5.  Man Overboard  -  Ian Hunter

I'd love to have included Bang! by Thunder but that was released right at the end of last year so it doesn't count.

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

Thanks Eva for making this an easy task - another forum I frequent has asked for a top 10 and that's way too hard... hmm

My nominations - in no particular order:

The Ballad of John Henry - The Man
White Sugar - Joanne Shaw Taylor
Coming Up For Air - Davy Knowles & BDS
Equilibrium - Aynsley Lister
Rich Man Falling - Simon McBride

These five stand head and shoulders above any other albums I bought this year.

You folks shoud get all five if you haven't already - 'specially that John Henry thing! lol

Ian, I was going to post "Rich Man Falling" by Simon McBride, but that was released in 2008, so I didn't. wink

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

I'm with Eva and Günter on their first 3 but in a slightly different order , namely:

=1  Ballad Of John Henry, Joe Bonamassa & By A Thread, Gov't Mule

3  Chickenfoot, Chickenfoot

4  Already Free, Derek Trucks Band

5  Everyday Demons, The Answer

I've been fortunate enough to see all 5 bands live this year too (Joe twice).

David

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

I'm struggling to cut it down to 5 but I would certainly include:

The Ballad of John Henry
Already Free
White Sugar
Coming up for Air
Equilibrium

all of which already mentioned. I love most of the others too.

So if I can have more that have not been mentioned:

Julian Sas - Wandering Between Worlds
CC Adcock - Lafeyette Marquis
Dan Granero - Can't Stand to Loose
CArl Verheyen - Trading 8's
Saan Chambers - Ten til Midnight

and I still feel guilty about what's left out.

In summary, 2009 was a good year for real music.

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

Ballad of John Henry - JB
21st Century Breakdown - Green Day
God's N Guns - Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Resistance - Muse
Everyday demons - The Answer

Without a doubt these would be the best. Between me and my mates, we've seen all of these bands this year. Ive of course seen JB and Green Day, and so NEARLY couldve gone to see DC at Wembley, with answer as support.

Ah well, has been a great year for Joe, and some good albums, but lets hope theres better choice next year! Although, Im seeing the same two again, lol. Bonamassa at the Bic, and Green Day at Wembley Stadium!!!

Re: Your top 5 albums 2009...

No particular order -

Ballad of John Henry
Already Free
By a Thread
Virgil and the Accelerators - And So it Begins  (love this title!)
Equilibrium

Would have added RAH itunes but not sure if that counts as an album.  Also Oli Brown's album (but isn't that from 2008 - I bought it this year).  Honorable mention to Coming Up for Air - love the songs but not crazy about some of the presentation on the album - too spoiled by live versions.

Maybe someone should start a top five for bit torrents?  So many good live shows this year.

And like Marty mentioned earlier - what a year for concerts big_smile - I have seen all of the above this year except Virgil, and Oli (but I did meet him at Cocoon).

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.
