Topic: If you wouldn't mind...

If anyone could listen to this and give their constructive criticism I would greatly appreciate it. It is a new version of my band doing "When the Lights Go Out" by the Black Keys. My band used to be a four piece with a rhythm guitarist, but now it's just a trio (ironically, the rhythm guitarist is the drummer now lol ) We're called "Black Jack Davey".

Re: If you wouldn't mind...

Well I liked the song and I think it can work just fine in a trio. I didn't think there was any problem with the playing and the guitar sound and playing was great. If I have a constructive criticism it would just be that the overall sound wasn't 'warm' enough.

I dunno where you were recording, but sounded (to me) that a lot of the sound was getting lost. The bass wasn't up enough in the mix so it was difficult to pick out how good it was and the drum tone (again, for me) left a lot to be desired.

I know its a problem we all have when recording a live sound and you have to play around with it a lot.  The last time my outfit tried it we used a friends hotel lobby with the drums behind the counter, guitars in front of the revolving door whilst I was singing on the stair landing!

But hey, the guitar, vocal and general tempo had a real nice sleazy feel to it which is a style I like a lot and in a trio, as you will know, there are no hiding places. Keep it up!

I liked it better than the original. Your a much better guitarist than the Black Keys guy. smile

Re: If you wouldn't mind...

I'm a little behind the times in my lack of familiarity with the Black Keys...never heard the song before. I really like what you're doing with it; has a very strong Free/Bad Co. vibe. Not sure how that compares to the original. But I like it. I like it a lot.

Won't critique the actual recording as I don't think that's what you were asking about. I'd like to hear more of your stuff.

Wow! Thank you so much! I'm flattered. big_smile

Thank you all for taking the time to look at this and give your opinion. With regards to the recording. It was done on a laptop in my garage lol so I agree the sound is sub-par.

Here is the original if anyone's interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KOs70Su_8s

Not bad. I like it too. Ship us a better recording, maybe something from a live set. Rick

Re: If you wouldn't mind...

Like you, Eric.  Don't care about the Black Keys.  You're good... pick a Luther Allison or Lucky Peterson song and let's hear that.

Re: If you wouldn't mind...

Thank you guys smile We will put up plenty more songs if you're interested. Here's our rather pathetic Myspace http://www.myspace.com/bjdavey

We've actually done a cover of "The Great Flood", but it has no vocals... if anyone would like to hear it anyway I'd love to put it up.
