Topic: Gibson Skylark

I just emailed Gibson about the possibility of them making me a Skylark like Joe's. I saw on the forum where he told someone to contact them and see if they'd do it. I'll keep everyone posted if I hear anything back! I'm sitting here listening to Joe's version of Feelin' Bad Blues from the Guitar Center Sessions, over and over again. So beautiful.

That's cool man, keep us posted on whether they'll do it or not and how much it'll cost!  That's a really great sounding guitar and it looks so cool, like a Les Paul/lapsteel Skylark hybrid.

Yea that is a sweet axe.  My parents bought a me a real 1959 Korina Skylark for my 21st b-day.  Now I just have to figure out how to play it lol.  If they won't make you one, you can always get an Electraslide.

Yea Ben,

the Lectraslide is my second choice, but I absolutely love the way the skylark looks/sounds... we'll see what happens. Something tells me that gibson (if they are willing to do it) will charge me an outrageous amount. And as a 22 yearold... that wont happen haha.

Prob. Especially the way the charge for anything Korina.  Let us know for sure.  I found a Korina V for a good price, but its an older one and the neck finish is worn.  I don't care about the wear, I care about how if would fell/play seeing how I never played something that worn out hmm

I played some vintage/worn out stuff when I went to the Guitar Center in Hollywood... I almost cried when I went into their vintage room. From personal experience, the '59 strat that was beat to hell, played like butter. I have never played anything so amazing. But, it was 37k. Ill just stick with a relic haha. If you want a Korina V, I can hook you up with the info of the guy who is hand building mine, or you can wait till I get mine in February so I can post a review.

PS. I have pictures from that guitar center trip on Facebook, also the place where they took me in the back room and I got to play a JB Les Paul through a Budda.

Ok I just got an email back from Gibson and they said to contact a gibson custom shop dealer with the specs and then they can contact Gibson for a quote. Anyone happen to know the specs of joes skylark?

If it was a real one-off for them, they may not have recorded the guitar's specs. Why would you if you're not going to make any more?

Say Joe calls up and wants another just like it but is over in Europe (i.e. can't send his original to Gibson) I bet they would have one waiting for him in the States.  I mean why WOULDN'T they keep the specs/templates/plans for that guitar???  How many guitars do they make that are designed for slide?  God Bless 'em, and lord knows I love Gibson, but they can be boneheads sometimes.  I'd like to see them branch out and be a little more innovative instead of resting on their laurels.  Same goes for Fender.  Have they released anything in the last 40 years that has changed the face of the electric guitar?

Maybe I'll send a picture to the guy who is doing my flying V and see what he can do.... I think it's safe to say that I would pay a fraction of the cost haha

I don't know man, but Gibson never ceases to astound me. It does seem odd though that Gibson and the Gibson Custom Shop are so far removed from each other. Oh well.

But wait a minute, will Logo33 actually be able to post the quote he gets? Is there some sort of buyer/supplier confidentiality that has to happen?

Well, it seems impossible to get a Skylark prototype like Joe's so since I'd like to go and try slide guitar I'm wondering what brand and model you suggest.

So far I've come across Electra guitars but I really don't know which model would suit slide best.
I also read that the Danelectro DC-59 may be good?

Do you guys have other recommendations or precisions? What is the best affordable slide guitar since Joe's is out of the question... Any models that would also sound OK unplugged?

You could try a round neck Dobro. Eric Sardinas has two electrified ones and he plays them both plugged and unplugged.
I have an open tuned Firebird I pull out when I have those Johnny Winter moments...  cool
Last month at a gig in Las Vegas the guitar player had a National Resonator (I've been told they still make like 300 or so of them each year). That is a very cool guitar but I guess there is a waiting list to get one.

I've not long got home with my new Danelectro DC59 and it sounds amazing! I can't believe that these guitars only cost around £150!

I've raised the action slightly and also raised up the pickups. Middle pickup selection sounds fantastic.
