Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Posted this review and links on Planet Rock for the many thousands of fans who still seem to be unaware of the Joe Forum!

Joe Bonamassa at The Guildhall, Southampton, Tuesday 1st December 2009.

Set List:
Ballad of John Henry (MusicMan Double Neck, 2 humbuckers and a single)
Last Kiss (Bigsby)
So Many Roads
So It's Like That (JB LP with creme plastic)
If Heartaches Were Nickels
Further On Up The Road (R9 with different controls for bass and treble, like JB LP, flipped neck pickup a la Peter Green)
Sloe Gin
Lonesome Road Blues (Rossington)
Happier Times (Ross. Capo 3)
Bridge to Better Days (Firebird)
Had To Cry Today
The Great Flood (JB LP w/ creme plastic)
Woke Up Dreaming (Capo 1)
Mountain Time (John Petrucci Music Man)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Encores:
Ball Peen Hammer (new Music Man double neck, 12 and 6 string, 3 humbuckers on the 6 - but never touch this neck)
Just Got Paid/Dazed and Confused Medley (Gibson Flying V)

Once again I was privileged to witness another flawless performance by the man I believe to be the greatest exponent of the guitar of our age.
And - even better than that, I was able to take photos from the pit!
The Guildhall is a great little venue and Joe could have filled twice over. The sound was near perfect for me - clear as a bell and not distorted. Best since Colston Hall and significant improvement on RAH as clearer and less loud.
If you haven't seen Joe before try to get a ticket and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. I predict it will take you about 30 seconds to realise what you have been missing.
For me, Joe's acoustic work is just, if not more, interesting, listenable and fascinating to both watch and listen to than his varied electric.
But - Sloe Gin was the highlight of the evening for me - totally flawless, effortless and only requiring practice 5 to 8 hours a day for 24 years to perform. How hard could it be?
Not sure about the 18 string doubleneck but it was interesting. Loved the gold top, honey burst LP and new albert lee, plus ruby tulip guitars.
Interesting new developments in the amps too.
Criticism? Well, I missed the RAH Django intro and I always hope to hear 24 Hours again - it takes 20 minutes so maybe we won't, but I hope! And - I loved Stop! at RAH and Cardiff and was surprised that it was dropped. However, I know this song in particular has been a contravertial choice with the fans - bit like Marmite.

Below are 2 links to slideshows of the pictures I took - first from the pit and then from the crowd, - and this time, I think they are rather good, but you be the judge.

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

I'm lost for words!  Cheers for passing them on - maybe if the opportunity is there at Bournemouth to meet Joe, I won't bottle out.  I've never done this forum or facebook or anything else like this before, so I'm a bit lost (and I'm not a guitarist - just love the music).  Thanks for being such a great gig buddy.  Hope to see you and the others in Bournemouth.  Not sure if I can get any of my photos for you to see, it may take me a while but I'm chuffed to bits with some of them!

As no other shows from the UK tour have turned up so far, I thought I would share my nice recording with all the good folks at Dime.

A big 'aircraft hanger' of a venue with a reputation for poor sound, the sold-out show from the Guildhall has received very favourable comments for both performance & the live sound from all those that have posted comments on the JB Fan forum. IMHO my recording accurately represents the sound on the night ... ambient, wet, diffuse .. not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like the big theatre type of sound you will like this one ... of course you don't get a tight, upfront, crisp, clear bass type of sound like on my previous recordings of Joe (made at Mr Kyps since 2005) ... but beggars can't be choosers! It's just great to be able to get to see & record Joe at a local venue, now that he has become 'famous' in the UK.

This is a very enjoyable show with Joe & the band putting in a typically fantastic performance. An appreciative & respectful audience so minimal audience intrusion during the quiet bits.

For those interested - basic details of the mastering applied to my original Zoom H2 recording (using Wavelab6) are as follows:
A: EQ / Multiband Compression / Limiting (-0.2dB max) / Dithering to 16bit
B: WAVs edited to fit on to 2xCDRs (with overlap) plus fade in/out
C: track split

A note for any finicky audiophiles out there:
Mastering has been done to polish the raw master recording with the aim of enhancing the listening experience. If you prefer virgin recordings, unspoiled by any such amateur 'dabbling' then do not join in on this one. Be warned now ... I don't want any whinging! ;-)

But for the rest of you Dime'ers I recommend that you GO FOR THIS ONE ... you won't be disappointed!
I score the sound quality as 8.5 out of 10 ( = B+ );
but hey! ... don't flame me if you don't agree ... & at least keep it friendly ;-)

If you have any comments, whether positive, negative or otherwise, I would love to read them ... don't be a lurker!

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

I think I have a copy of one of your Mr Kyps recordings Steve and I have to say you captured an absolute stonker with that one - it's the one with Martin Harley! The atmosphere that's created on that recording beats almost any live album I've heard - in some ways, even better than LFNIP from an audience reaction point of view, you should send a copy of that to Joe, I'm sure he would appreciate it!

Thanks for the kind words Geoff. I think it is difficult to beat some audience recordings because they can instantly take you back to the show in a way that official live recordings don't seem to.

The Mr Kyps 2007-08-03 show is also a favourite of mine .. mainly because it includes "Blue Tea" (the music of Tea for One with the vocal of Blues Deluxe) which gives me shivers every time I listen to it ... & I've not come across any other recordings that include it.
I guess the 2005-05-18 "First Ever English Show" @ Mr Kyps is probably my stand-out favourite though. Lucky enough to be at & record Joe's 1st ever performance in the UK still makes me smile!

Good idea about sending Joe a copy, I might just do that!

Cheers - Steve

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Nice work again John.

The pauses in Woke Up Dreaming where the crowd (that's us big_smile ) get loud and Joe responds by playing something even better really capture the feel of the evening.

cheers

Re: Southampton Guildhall show

Very nice John. It amazes me that each time he plays Woke Up Dreaming, it  is different and seemingly more complex. Truly a work in progress. Rick
