Topic: Robben Ford trio

Myself, wife Helen, son in law Dean and daughter Karen caught Robben Ford last night at the Coach House in San Clemente where Joe played his 20th anniversary show.

Robben Ford is well known as one of the premier guitarists around. This concert did nothing to disprove it. Robben apologized at the start for being sick with a cold and suffering from laryngitis. He said his voice was shot and we would have to do with his guitar playing. That was just fine with us.

Robben and his band, Travis Carlton on Bass and Toss Panos on kit just flat delivered. The venue was full of bass players who came to see Travis play. They were not disappointed. He took of on a smoking solo on both Earthquake and Spoonful to give Robben a rest. Spoonful was especially tasty as the band took off on an extended jam that lasted almost 20 minutes with all three exhibiting mastery and unison.

I managed to score the setlist for a souvenier. Robben was too sick to meet anyone and apologized again but no one cared after that performance.

If he appears near you, don't pass up the chance to see an amazing performance. His command of Blues and the Jazz Fusion mix in his playing and chords are special. Rick

Not last night Roger. It had the new songs off his latest cd Soul on Ten, but the set was somewhat abbreviated due to his illness. He sang as best as he could but you could tell he was stressing to deliver.  He did play my favorite, Indianola, and Spoonful was epic. The whole place was clapping and cheering several times during that tune after inspired solos by all. It was a near sellout, filled with fans, including me and my family. I  was very pleased to snag the setlist which was written on the back of Robben's personal itinerary from management. Thought I was going to be harassed by security when I ran up on the stage to get it but they decided to let me go. smile

I like Robben a lot. I've seen him only a couple times though, once with Larry Carlton (with Travis on bass), and once with this band. I think Robben is one of the smoothest and tastiest players alive and I also would not mind one bit if Robben played a set without singing, especially with these guys (I've also seen Toss and Travis back Larry Carlton as a trio).  I love Toss's drumming style - very dynamic; and Travis, simply put. is one of the best bass players I've ever heard - phenomenal player.

Wow Lee! With Larry Carlton! Dream gig. Travis tore it up last night. Played bass like a lead on a couple of 5 minute solos, and Toss was equally brilliant with a fine, very unique solo in Spoonfull. The way Travis and Robben worked together was magical. Worked for me until Joe in March. Both masters, just different. I was talking to several fans of Robben last night and they had not heard of Joe. I clued them in on the spot that they better get educated. How can you not like one and not the other?

Can't beat Robben for a technically tight guitar exhibition. I was tempted to go see his nephew drummer Gabe's band Lotus Rush last night in my girlfriends local watering hole, but Fri. night here in Benicia rendered way too relaxed to go out. I've seen Gabe spell his Dad Pat and sit in with Uncle Robben before, the talent in that family runs deep.
