Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

The Yankees pulled out a victory last night, there up 2 games to 1....A-Rod with a big home run (thanks to replay)....Mariano comes in and scares me again, he should retire if the Yankees win it all (just my opinion)

Game 4 tonight smile

Hey Shred,

The stress is killin' me!!!!  Being a fan should be a form of relaxation!!!!   hmm  In my mind I was playing roulette saying well, I'd trade an Eagles win over a Phillies loss on Sunday (sorry Donovan)....didn't happen, my Eagles blow the drawers off the New York Giants and the Phillies back themselves into a corner. roll

Them damn Yankees have a very good pitching staff, the Phillies need to work on that department and acquire a reliable closer!

I seem to favor teams that the general public don't want to win, facing the big powerhouses. (like my basketball team in the final four) Since you are a west coaster I'm wondering if you see this...do you know how many people wear Yankee attire that aren't fans and don't follow baseball???

Of course I'm partial, but I genuinely like the Phillies team for being who they are, for the most part, they really have checked egos and are a great group of guys.  I hope Shane's hand is OK, he is such a spark!

Against the odds, but wanting to believe....signing off from Philly....May the best team win!  smile

Hey Angela,
If you're looking for relaxation, I wouldn't exactly say sports is going to give it to you...unless you start watching golf. Team sports in particular (and especially if you're emotionally invested in a team) will be an emotional rollercoaster, will give you EXCITEMENT and will continually place you at the edge of your seat. As they say "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat"...you can't have one without the other!

Chase Utley ROCKS!!!!! I can't believe FOX picked Cliff Lee player of the game last night. That knob, Joe Buck, must have had something to do with it.

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

Chase Utley does ROCK!!! He actually is hitting better than he did all season.  Of all the guys on the team, Chase has the most amount of women drooling over him!!!  Especially my 17 year old daughter!  One of my fav players  during this season is Jason Werth, he has just really turned up the heat on his home runs.  ( I know this will sound  a little strange, but he kinda' reminds me of a giraffe with those long legs, the way he covers alot of ground fast and he's got a big tongue, personally I'd like to shave that thing he's got going on in the chin area big_smile

I don't know if anyone ever heard this...but when Madden puts you on the cover of that football video game, usually the dude on the cover has a terrible season following.  Anyway, Sports Illustrated had Ryan Howard on the cover of the last issue, he hasn't hit a home run since. Back to Chase,  a very humble guy that never brags or says too much, but at the parade last year he dropped the "F" bomb when the parade ended up in the stadium, it didn't get sensored everywhere and there were lots of little kids in the stadium, it was very uncool IMHO. (it appealed to younger folks, just unnecessary) I continue to be annoyed by Joe Buck, not as much as last year though.  (jdawg, I was thinking of you, I'll have to make a post over at Tommy Castro, his new album is fantastic!!!)

Yeah, Bill, how true.  I'm trying to mentally prepare against any disappointment...  I can handle good competition, but bad calls or silly errors that can change the outcome of the game seem more intense when you are emotionally invested.  Even the thought of Back to Back World Series...its surreal!!!

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

Hi Angela, congrats on the game 5 win....if the Yankees lose the pennant, I'm putting this one on Joe Girardi, he has made some moves or lack of that make me scratch my head....I'm real worried about Andy pitching on short rest, this 3 day rotation is stupid in my opinion....Pedro wants this ballgame bad, I dont think the Yankees can beat him.....it's down to the "pen", and Charlie has quit on Brad Lidge, I hope he didnt blind side him, he's going to need him soon, confidence from your skipper means an awfull lot.....I say were going 7 games, always believed it from the get go....time to start giving Utley the Barry Bonds treatment until Howard comes through with some big hits....

Best of Luck smile

P.S....yes they ride me real good at work, seing how I never have been to New York, but my one good friend at work knows how I can breakdown a game in detail.....jack of all trades, master of none sad

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

Shred,
I'm sensing you think Charlie is wrong about Brad Lidge.  I'm not sure if Charlie's 100% quit on Brad, BUT most fans think Charlie's given Brad more than enough opportunity to redeem himself.  Brad may hold the record of extremes of the best record last season to the worse record this year.  I feel sorry for him, you can see the tension in his face by the way he clenches his jaw.  I hate to be one of those...what have you done for me lately types, but when Brad steps on the mound I feel a wave of nausea, he makes me a nervous wreck!!  yikes  Phillies fans need to check their emotions at the gate on Brad, (including myself) we would have never won the World Series 2008 without Brad Lidge or Cole Hammels.

I was at a party a couple of weeks ago and  I was talking to a woman I know who grew up in Wisconsin and lives near me now and she traveled in the same circles as Brad and his wife as an athlete at Notre Dame.  She said he was a super nice guy, he now lives in Colorado in the off season.

I remember well the 1993 World Series run the Phillies had with Mitch Williams at the mound.  I heard, not sure if its true, poor Mitch Williams had death threats after this loss, just terrible.  He got out of dodge for a while, now is back on Comcast SportsNet broadcasting for the Phillies.  Mitch's nickname was Wild Thing because of his wild pitches, when his show comes on they sometimes play the song...Wild Thing I Think I Love You, but I want to know for sure...my fav song of all time. smile  Funny article, not sure if its all factual...

Well what can I say......the Phillies were tough, nothing to hang their heads about.....the Yanks won one for the boss, George has done so much for the game....

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

The Phils did a great job defending being the 2008 champions, but in the end the Yankees bought themselves some of the best, and they are a better team with superb pitching!

Shred, is it true that A-Rod makes more money than the entire Florida Marlins team?

Also, do you think when you look at the big picture of baseball, American League vs. National League, that the American League has an advantage of statistically having a better record because of the designated hitter system?

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

Heard former commissioner Fay Vincent comment on the radio this AM and he said if the Yankees are going to spend that kind of money they should be expected to win. He also mentioned that the game is so money driven that it will never change referring to getting the World Series back to at least early Oct. instead of dragging it on into chilly Nov. Would have loved to see Chase Utley jack one last homer in his last at bat, he would have gotten the MVP even in a losing cause, it has happened before. The Phillies or whoever should get recognition each year for being the best team in baseball.............other than the Yanke$$.

A-Roid lol making more money than the Marlins players, would not surprise me....the man made a fool of himself when he threw his cousin under the bus trying to cover up lie after lie sad ....as far as the American League goes, I love the junior circuit....the DH is awsome, nothing worse than a pitcher like a Randy Johnson getting up to the plate and looking foolish swing a bat, I dont know the exact numbers, but I'm sure they have better slugging stats in the AL because of having a better hitter in the lineup

Look for Brian Cashman getting another stud to play in the outfield, Matsui and Damon shouldnt be back, there worn out.....and look for Roy Halliday and maybe Tim Lincecum (minus the long hair and the weed yikes) signing with my Yanks, cuz we will buy the pennant.....thats just how we operate, and ALL the players in baseball love the Yanks, regardless of what they may say otherwise, because huge Yankee contracts bring leverage to other players in negotiations with thier own teams

27 World Championships smile cool ....

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

This is a baseball topic, so I'll keep on the subject.....Tim "the freak" Lincecum won the NL Cy Young award for the second year in a row....eligible for arbitration after making a scrawny $650,000 this year, he will be fithy rich now....he needs top sign a one year deal and get ready for the open market.....NEW YORK YANKEES!!!!!

Shred,
Didn't Tim just get busted for pot? Nothing but a long-haired hippie who doesn't look like a baseball player!! lol I didn't think he really showed his stuff in the All-Star game, but wow he is really a great pitcher. My sons are big fans of Tim.  I hope he doesn't end up with the Yankees!  Shred, are you originally from New York?

And, do you think you can write me a 'scrip for Phillies withdrawl?  I got it bad.

Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs

Shred, jdawg...
I need counseling.  I wrote a letter to the editor of Sports Illustrated after the issue "World Series on the Brink", first time I ever wrote to them and they printed it...its the featured letter to the editor.  Anyway, I know they have the right to edit, but they took what I said out of context so much that my sarcasm escaped some readers, who could possibly think I was a Yankees fan. (My high school senior takes a sports marketing class and her teacher brought this to her attention.)  I'm thinking of suing SI for slander!!!  big_smile

The reason I wrote to SI is because they hit a nerve when they compared ARod and Derek Jeter to Lennon & McCartney...sacriligeous...  I disagreed with the comparison and quoted the Beatles....Money can't buy me love, but wow, did those damn Yankees buy themselves the best baseball team. (Most people should be able to figure out the comparison and analogy, however for those that don't, YIKES, they could think I'm a Yankees fan!!!) yikes  SI left out that I love my Phillies win or lose, left out that I agreed with Jeter's...pitching, pitching, pitching, made the difference... I'm officially retired from writing letters to editors.

Let's just say I have a new appreciation for why Steve Carlton disdained the media and refused to speak to them...
