Topic: Llandudno November 28th

....wow. Joe, you utterly amazed me. Jaw never came off the floor.

I liked Michael's review of Le Carre - v.good!

Sandi Thom was a pleasant support act I must say.

On to the main:

Ballad Of John Henry - Always a wonderful opener. Minor sound problems (as Geoff mentioned) but hearing that backline from the front row over the P.A was thrilling to hear as a fellow guitarist. Smooth theremin action and a nice dark slide solo.

Last Kiss - One of my favourite tones of Joe. It just digs in and hops along - my head was and feet were rocking along.

So Many Roads - Soaring and smooth with some lovely bends. I thought I might miss a horn section wink but it just felt slightly more dark - which I liked!

So It's Like That - I think these three songs group very well together. Just great toe-tapping songs with playing to blow you away. I heard Rick mixed very well in this too as in the whole show - most say he is too quiet if anything. I believe I was on the wrong side for the bass (only a small lack of definition though).

If Heartaches Were Nickels - It may be a slow song, but the shear power of it makes up for the momentum change. A song that makes you know that every word and every note count.

Further On Up The Road - If anything, this was a song I am "least" familiar with, but it felt so good even with Joe on his own. You gotta love the blues!

Sloe Gin - Now then, what can I say....That atmospheric intro was incredible and really struck me more than any song so far. I found myself forgetting that I was at a concert or any problems I had. It just took me somewhere else...
It just builds so well. Again, it is a heavy feeling blues number - but one of my favourite songs that I play everyday.

Lonesome Road Blues - This song is just so much fun. The pace, the nice little riffs....makes me want to play guitar so badly!

Happier Times - ....THAT SOLO. The meaning of the song...just so much. A major highlight in my whole music collection.

Had To Cry Today - Thanks so much Joe for including this and BTBD - I was surprised, yet delighted. I love a good riff, this delivers.

Bridge To Better Days - That Music Man really does have a unique tonal character - It doesn't have the weight (I'm guessing literally too) of the L.Ps, but it did work nicely with this song. Reminded me of buying You & Me and almost burning the cd out.

The Great Flood - An exercise in truly masterful playing...I don't need to say anything more.

Woke Up Dreaming - It is noted that this is a piece that leaves you stunned. You are not kidding... big_smile 11/10

Mountain Time - Why does drop D sound so great? This was far more weighty than I ever imagined - ten minutes of pure melody that I hum every where I go. I dig that MM 25th Anniversary - must.have.

Encores:

Ball Peen Hammer - Could you get better than the MM 25th Anniversary? Of course you could. Such a nice sound, so clear and articulate. Another song that just builds on you, love that snare going off like a gun.

Just Got Paid/Dazed And Confused - No need to put anything here to be honest. Perfect.

That show was unforgettable and mind blowing. See you next time, Joe. It can only get better.

Re: Llandudno November 28th

My 3rd JB show and i thought the best yet

Just awesome

We had a Bonnavirgin with us whose verdict was

"I thought he was going to be good - but not that good"

That's another convert

Roll on Birmingham next May

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Great review DaveWammbarro - thanks, I enjoyed it.

It got me even more excited for Southampton on Tuesday. I'll never remember the set list though.

Re: Llandudno November 28th

It was the Cardiff crowd - Martin and co they were standing right next to me so know for sure it was them, they were also staying in the hotel with Geoff and I and our party of Bonamassa devotees.

Rock on and keep the faith!!

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Thanks for the great review Davewammbarro.

Really can't wait for thursday. It seems so long since the RAH!

Tripsy smile

Re: Llandudno November 28th

I have seen Joe over 10 times now and this was the best I have seen him. I say that each time, how the hell does he keep stepping it up??? I was lucky enough to be in the pit for the first 3 and the rest of my party were front and center. The light was excellent too. Sound was super. We had driven 350 miles after doing a gig in Margate, I would have driven from Australia for it.
As some of you know Virgil was shown around ''Thor'' (Joes rigg) by Joe pre show. I will post separately about that. Once again a great time, with wonderful people. We get to see them again tonight in Notts smile

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Thanks.

Appetite whetted for tonight smile

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Fifth time I have seen Joe, including RAH and this was the best yet. Absolutely faultless!!!!!

Excellent different version of Sloe Gin to boot!!

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Hi, I am a new concert goer at the age of 51, and was only inspired to do so by seeing Joe performing on Youtube. I have been listening to Planet Rock in Engalnd, and I heard people talk about Joe there. Iwent on Youtube and saw the man in action and was hooked. I drove 150 miles to see him in Llandudno on Saturday night and was bowled over. What you see on Youtube or DVD is exactly what you get Live. I don't think a JBvirgin like me was really prepared for what I saw. Joe walked out of the dark playing his guitar and then carried on playing without a break for two hours, pausing only to change guitars. The band went off for a well earned rest and Joe played the gobsmacking 'Woke up dreaming' for nearly ten minutes on his own, wonderful. Not one wrong note all night, I swear he could have played for hours.
Joe told us he and the band were honoured to be there, well, it was me who had the honour Joe. You are the Man, and I am now a fan.

Great first post Joefanone. Welcome. You have found many kindred spirits here. Now that you have lost your Bonavirginity, join the throng and have a blast. Each show is better than the last. Rick

Welcome to the forum joefanone. You'll find you're not alone here. There are quite a few of us of a certain age who have been brought back into watching live music by hearing Joe on cd or video and then just having to see him live.

cheers

Re: Llandudno November 28th

I totally agree. A faultless performance.
He even dealt with the very slight problem (control knob fell off) in a calm and collected way when there was a small break in the song. A true professional.

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Spot on with your review at Venue Cymru, couldn't agree more !

My first JB gig, and my daughter's ( age 17 ) first ever gig ! What a baptism ! Travelled from Portsmouth to be there. It was a privilege to be in the presence of genius. Time flew didn't it, lost in the musicality of this wonderful guitarist.

Can't wait till he's back again next spring. Friends of mine seeing him in Southampton tomorrow....jealous or what !

Pennyslad, Welcome to the forum. Each event brings more here to share their joy. We all feed on it like vampires. smile
Too bad you took your daughter for her first live concert to see Joe!
You should have hooked her up for a hip hop gig first.

She's spoiled for life now. tongue (Way to go DAD!) I've ruined all my kids the same way.

Re: Llandudno November 28th

Joe and the band are at the top of their game right now and Llandudno was absolutely brilliant. We travelled from Aberdeen to be there and so glad we did. Long journey home though. Anyone know how many were in the crowd?

Re: Llandudno November 28th

We got to the theatre early to pick up my photo pass and two guest passes specially for Sue's birthday which Joe had graciously promised at the last Sheffield gig, only to find we were too early and no passes were to be found. So we skulked around the back of the venue and found the tradesmans entrance (Stage Door) and located Barney Vernon from the Gig Cartel and his colleague. Great, they had my name down for the photo pass but not for the guest passes - oops, we had given our original tickets to two Bonavirgins on the suggestion of Rachael in the States. Fortunately I had Rachael's e-mail confirming the passes so we were good to go. Then Barny said, "any chance you could take some pictures of the Blues in the Schools thing for us, we don't have a photographer here" Sure no problem" says I, "where do I go?

We walk into the venue, which is huge and about 85 young guitarists are sat on chairs to the side of the hall and Joe is standing with one of his guitars chatting to the group. I unpack my photo stuff and the group moves to the stage, where Joe Bogie, Carmine and Rick set up for an impromptue demo of a couple of numbers from the show. I snap a couple of shots from the floor of the auditorium and then sneak behind the scenes and onto the stage to try and get the rear view of the band with the students in the picture. I then move around the other side of the stage and whilst Joe's chatting to the students from the stage, he spots me and says - "Hey Geoff, how you doin'. Got your big lens with you - you could shoot me from Manchester with that!" Well, he walks over cool as you like and shakes hands with me right there on stage - I felt like I was receiving the Nobel Peace Prize right then - Jeez, he remembered my name after all that time! I was truly humbled by that I can tell you.

Anyway Joe wound up by offering to sign pictures, guitars, anything that they brought along then spent some time with 18 year old Virgil McMahon of Virgil and the Accelerators and proceeded to show him round his Amp and effects set up. I don't know who was more humbled by this, Virgil or his manager Martin!!!! Then Joe pulled out the Ernie Ball twin neck 12 / 6 string monster, gave a quick demo and handed it to Virgil, adding "it's the only one of it's type in the world" - you could see Virgil gulp! Joe then went on to explain that he uses it for the Encore at the moment adding " it's funny when you walk on stage with this and look out into the audience, you see maybe 2-300 little red lights, then wait, wait - FLASH!" Well I nearly choked, what a graphic description of exactly what happened later that evening.

Took time out to chat with Carmine, Rick and Dave and also some of the guys from Stone Soul River, who opened for Joe in 2006/7. Missed speaking with Bogie, which was a shame. But he handed me a stick at the end of the show later that night, which made our day complete.

We took some 25 guests with us to Llandudno, about half of them being Bonavirgins. All were just blown away by the show and Joe's playing, then it was back to the hotel to celebrate Sue's birthday, with not just our own crowd but some new friends we had met form Cardif and some old friends we had met on previous Joe Shows.
