Topic: Isle of Man TT

Here you go Roy..

A little island in the middle of the Irish Sea, each year vibrates to the sound of thousands of motorbikes. One lap of the course is THRITY SEVEN AND THREE QUARTER MILES!!!!! How the hell do you remember that??? Average speed = 130 MPH, number of laps for each race - between 3 and 6 depending on race. Top speed 200mph. Type of road - country roads, sea level to top of Snaefell Mountain. Races have been run for over 100 years. quite simply a road racing Mecca.

Here's a few pics to whet your appetite

They pass here doing about 160 - 170mph - a few feet away!
Awesome spectacle!

Re: Isle of Man TT

It is a stunning week or weekend , the racing is heart stopping. My brother raced as privateer some years ago on ducatti. Have been a few times.

Great pics Geoff

Re: Isle of Man TT

Hey Geoff,

Those are great pictures! I'm able to watch the highlights on Discovery HD Theatre:

Just by your pictures you can sense the speed of the bikes. Although, those seem like awful precarious seats with people sitting right next to the roadway. Yikes!! wink

Warning, - other side of the fence opinion coming up....

always been in two minds about this (true) road racing, - sure it must be the thrill of a lifetime but I have been close to motorcycle racing for many years and lost a couple of good friends but sorry guys the TT circuit is years out of date. Were it not for commercial pressure from the IofM it would not survive today.

Riders like John McGuiness are almost forced to earn their living by putting their life at (in my mind) unreasonable risk, -  superb photograph of him finishing as winner a couple of years ago and grasping tight to his young daughter, - the relief to still be alive was clear to see.

And then the death of people like David Jefferies.....The stupid old men in white coats who preside over the out of date rules in a vain attempt to cling on to tradition.....No catch trays on engines for a 1000cc race bike revving through to those rpm's ????????? It verges on criminal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OwBXlycV88

http://www.davidjefferiesracing.com/index2.php

It is not necessary in this day and age for there to be  racing sport where parts of bodies are returned in pieces after being scraped out of somebody's front garden. I fully understand motorcycle racing is about risk, - but the sport has a duty to take away as much of that risk as it can.

PS awesome pictures Geoff, don't let my negativity take anything away from that.

Re: Isle of Man TT

Ian, thanks for your response. I do understand and respect you point of view about true road road racing. David Jefferies was a great rider who loved the TT for what it is. I think you will find that many of the issues you refer to have been addressed regarding safety. Obviously, the nature of true road racing is the fact that the racing takes place on public roads, which I have to say, carries inherrant risks. Rossi, the greatest rider of all time, visited this year and rode the circuit on a standard R1 Yamaha (at a respectable pace) guided by the great Giacomo Agostini and wants to come back to do a few more laps. He will never race there and I understand his reasons for not wishing to do so, why should he? I also follow MotoGP and circuit racing, Oulton Park is on my doorstep and Donnington, just a couple of hours down the road. Both circuits recognised for being "riders" circuits, but not the same thing at all. Again, thank you and I appreciate your point of view. It's still a fantastic spectacle.

Re: Isle of Man TT

Having grown up there I can see both points of view. It really is terrible the amount of top riders that have died on the course, along with non racing fatalities in the festival.

The thing I think though, is no-one is putting guns to these guys heads, if they are not willing to ride thats fine, its clear that the top riders here can succeed at the top level in circuit racing, a certain Carl Fogarty and Steve Hislop will confirm that, with their respective superbike triumphs. McGuiness is in their league for sure, as would other guys like Guy Martin, Cameron Donald etc etc. They all go into the race with their eyes open is what I am saying. It is tragic I know and we have lost some of the top guys, I still remember the shock of hearing Phil Mellor had died in the Senior Race. The weather that day was shocking, I ride bikes and I would have got the bus to work that day if I had to ride in that weather. Then there was the Manx Rider Phil Hogg, his crash was just from his bike seizing up. Then as you mention Dave Jeffries. I have been away from the Island a few years and the shock when I heard about him was awful, there are riders sinonimous with the TT, Joey(and Robert), Fogarty, Hislop, Hailwood, Agostini, McGuiness and undoubtedly Jeffries.

You have to understand the Isle of Mans point of view in keeping it going. Without it the island would lose a major slice of their income, it would cripple a lot of businesses there, if it just disapeared.

I think it is what it is, and anyone racing goes into it knowing the truth, but the race is special, the tradition of over 100 years of racing, the courage shown by the riders, which I think is the biggest draw of the race. Most of the guys riding are guys that have day to day jobs, but they are warriors almost when they are competing in the TT, they are to me at least, I dont know how big the prize money is these days, but it deserves to be a very substantial amount. Then on top of the racing you have everything else that goes on in the 2 weeks. Last year seems to have been a down year entertainment wise, but usually it is heaving with outside events, mototrcycle collectors rallies, outside motorbike racing(Beach, Trials, Off Road racing). For mention on its own the Ramsey Sprint is a great day with all sorts of crazy bikes entered into the drag race.

Geoff I agree a spectacle of the highest order!!!

Great photos.
I remember going over there in 1982, think Joey Dunlop
held the lap record back then of about 102mph.
Went on the old Isle of Man ferry that used to run from Liverpool.
Good memories.

Great memories indeed. I think it was probably more like 120 MPH Lester, Mike Hailwood did 108 MPH on a 500 Honda in about '68, which itself was a huge achievement, given that todays records are broken with angines of 1000 cc and much improved roads, brakes, tyres and suspension, a hike from 108 to 130 in thirty plus years is not so surprising I guess. Still frighteningly impressive though!

"Ban it" probably, as being far too dangerous, along with, horse riding (this country's biggest source of serious injury claims), Snowboarding (I have a steel shoulder as a result of that little escapade) Skiing, parachute jumping, etc etc etc

Yes, quite!! lets add car injury claims to the long list. Not forgetting, around 25 people get killed on our roads, every DAY!! Thats an equivalent of an airliner crashing into the ground every week!! That must drive H & S just CRAZY!!!!
