Is it BJJ?
Sorry, couldn't resist!
Most of the blues standards from the old school were written and sung by a bass player. Do you know his name?
It's gotta be Willie Dixon!
Forget Muddy and the Wolf, the blues isn't nowhere near where it is today without Willie Dixon. I always did dig his spoken parts on the Wolf's Goin' Down Slow.
Willie Dixon made a killing off of Led Zeppelin in the 90's due to Robert Plant's lyrics being basically a carbon copy on songs such as "Whole Lotta Love" and "Bring It On Home"
Here is a guy that would have never been anybody if it wasn't for singing and playing guitar. Robert Johnson. Its not my favorite music to listen to but if you listen to any of his songs he's playing a bass line and a lead at the same time, also he kept that foot stomp going and sang his tunes. Keith Richards said the first time he heard Robert Johnson he asked who those 2 guys were.
And your right the big name guitar players in blues could sing very well. I'm about the biggest Eric Clapton fan you can find sort of following him to his house and trying to meet him (thats just creepy) anyways thats a guy that made it as "God" before anybody really knew he sang. Yeah he had a tune with the Blues Breakers but honestly it wasn't great. Even in Cream he was guitar first and vocals second. I'll always feel like no matter how good everything else is if the guitar isn't that great its going to take the band down a level. With that said the best guitar player in the world without a great band behind them will stink. You have to have the happy medium.

And truth be told, I think I would stalk Eric Clapton if I wasn't so lazy.
Well, I was there too and the guy who rocked out on the electric and as you say, sounded like crap on the acoustic was given a loaner acoustic by Guitar Center for the performance and the inside Pick up was broken!! Notes were not missed! Anyone who knows anything about guitars knew that something was not right on stage. Totally not his fault. If the guitar was working properly I can guarantee he would have won!!! check out Youtube Dan Peters Electric. Just thought I'd let you know that.
Kirby is from texas, i was there at this event, and got to see Joe Play(main reason why i went) but i know seeing the final 5 competitors play was a win situation as well. but out of all 5 competitors, Kirby was the best, and he had the most original stuff, the 2 slide thing alone is original, and his music altho its slide and blues didnt sound similar to other players, and his acoustic version as someone said sounds like shred, it was much better than the rest of the competitors, there was one of the guys that played sounded good on electric, and once they gave him the acoustic he sounded like crap, i couldnt even play it, missing notes, muted notes, buzzing, it sounded like someone learning how to play a guitar.
all in all it was a great show, Joe ripped it on the guitar as usually, he started it off with ballad of John Henry and a few more of his songs and then they brought out many other guitar players and famous people. i forgot 1/2 of their names already, but i do remember Elliot Easton, he was one of the judges and played with Joe after the competition.
as far as for GC putting this thing, well i might not be a great Fan of GC but i like the fact that they offer such competition for people to enter, hell yea it would be cool to win 25k in cash and a brand new 09 R9 Les Paul, Ok they might call it the King of blues competition, but lets face it, it dosent have a real crown, nor the real title of being the king of blues, but you get the names of players out there.
all in all, it was a great show.

That's what I was saying! The high notes weren't coming out, you could tell he was puzzled in the beginning but kept going. Not trying to take away from Kirby, but Dan was jipped out of the opportunity to perform acoustically.
No matter which competiton you take, over the past few years judges and jury were looking for attraction, let us say they were looking for the perfect circus...
Finalists of the several different genres were so a-typical, weren't they?
With every competition there are guys that have been overlooked, but they impressed me personally.
The Two-Slide-Blues-King....well....I wonder If Joe B. had won such a competiton had he participated in younger years...
True Jimi75. And I wish them all the best. The music business will break your heart and steal your soul, if you let it.

I said something similar when the competition first started up this year. I said if you had someone of Derek Trucks' ability and stage presence, I don't think he would win. They're looking for a poster child (man), which includes the rock star poses, solo faces, and ability to jump around stage enough to rouse the crowd.
First off this is a STUPID thread.
Second Its really funny to hear you all say... That guy sucks he's not blues, Blues is not a gimick, blah, blah, blah.
Oh **## there's a youtube video of him playing real blues, I mean he's ok, F Guitar Center, Blah, blah, blah.
Joe has said he's not a blues player he's an entertainer. And if I remember right he said that at a guitar center interview.
Joe advertises for Guitar Center all the time. Lets stop bashing a player for doing something interesting and talking about how much better we are and how we can take him if he doesnt have a slide. Who cares if you can take him without a slide. Thats not his style.
At the end of the day, no guitar player is any better than any other. We are all at different points in our learning, and we are all good at different things. And some are better at writing, some better at singing. Some are better at it all.
I think someone is really good when what ever they play inspires me.
Mike Cambell and George Harrison are two of my favorite guitar players, And its not because they play crazy leads.
Being a amazing guitar player has nothing to do with the blues. Robert Johnson was not a amazing guitar player. He was creative and started a type of blues that influenced others. Thats what made him good. Not his chops.
So those of you who think your amazing, playing your les pauls into Joe Bonamassa inspired rigs in you bedrooms. Maybe your not famous because you are playing boring uninspiring riffs. Maybe you need to simplify and play something interesting and possibly gimmicky, so that people listen and say
Holy crap that sounds different. I've never heard blues played like that.

Whoa buddy take it easy there! Not only do I take that as a personal attack on me, but a couple of really nice guys on this forum. "Maybe your not famous because you are playing boring uninspiring riffs"... or maybe I'm not famous because I recently bought my first home (I'm 23 years old by the way) with my own money, am still going to school to finish my degree, work full time (night shift BTW) and have absolutely no time to gig. I think you need to reassess your attitude man. Not only have I been a constant help to anyone asking help, but do actually dedicate the little time that I have to helping people better their own tone/playing/style.
As far as the "tired old licks" part goes...I don't even know where to start. I play a lot of JB licks, no doubt, so are you saying JB is "tired sounding"? On a JB forum too? Doh! Not only could I play SRV/Hendrix note for note when I was 16, but also Clapton and EJ too. This was all before I discovered Joe. I've since added some Joe, Jeff Beck, Page, Robben Ford, Warren Haynes, and a few others. If you don't like my style, FINE that's okay. But frankly, because this is a JB forum, I tend to mainly showcase that style. You haven't even heard half of what I or others here are capable of. BTW where are YOUR clips of you playing bro?
Lastly as far as the KOTB winner goes, I will admit that I was very sore that I got eliminated the 2nd round. You can check my previous posts from another thread. I was treated unfairly by the judges and Guitar Center, to the point that EVERYONE there was shocked that I had not advanced. I was man enough to apologize in my post above for jumping the gun and judging a book by it's cover. He is a GREAT blues guitarist and has a unique style/technique. Is it groundbreaking? No, but I applaud anyone who has the guts to get up there and play their **** off. So not only are your attacks out of line, but hold no merrit. Have a nice day!
WOW! Somebody should just stop this thread before we get a war going on or something. Lets just count to 3 and take a deep breath and remember this is all just for fun. If you wanna fight do it by email or better yet another forum. This is the non hate forum and it should remain that way!
Agreed, and that's why I appologized for my previous remarks. I never attacked anyone and pledge to never do so on this respectable forum! The Gear Page...now that's a different story lol. That place is a no-holds barred!
Anyways, I have a lot of love for the people on this forum. Lets sing some Kumbuya and enjoy some friggin' guitar!
stratpaulguy86- Sorry I pissed you off.
I had a 50 line response to add but I figure its probably not worth sending out.
If you all want to leave this site clean of attacks then reread your posts earlier in this thread and learn from yourselves because thats why I started my last post with "This is a stupid thread". The entire thread was about yelling at guitar center and the guy who won. And everyone saying they can play better than him. What ever that means.
I promise you'll never hear me say that about my playing on this board. Besides if your really really good the people will do the bragging for you Lets just let this thread die and start talking about gear again.
