Topic: Bad Monkey settings

Hey guys,

To my great joy my very thoughtful friends gave me a Digitech Bad Monkey pedal for a pre-birthday present yesterday... I love my friends! wink
I spend a good deal of the (late) morning today trying it out and I´m totally happy with it (my neighbors are not I guess).

So now that I took a break I just have to ask you technically advanced guys wether one of you has it as well and which settings you choose to make it sound best? You all know I´m a total idiot with that kind of stuff ... wink

Thanks, Eva

Re: Bad Monkey settings

I dont have one, but what I usually do with any OD is set them up so that they sound as close the the amp as possible (in volume and sound) then add the gain until it starts grinding.

All depends what you want really, i always find it useful to start as close as possible to the original sound of the amp smile

That has a few settings

Good Luck!

Re: Bad Monkey settings

I agree with the above statement.  For most overdrive pedals, however, there are some "standard" settings that I find work well for most amps.

First being the classic SRV clean boost technique of diming the level and keeping the gain to a minimum.  Set your EQ to taste depending if you are playing a dark or bright sounding guitar.  I typically like the tone between 10 o'clock and 1 o'clock depending...

Second is if you are using a super clean sound already.  I usually set the gain to at least noon, sometimes 3 o'clock and then bring the volume of the pedal to just above unity volume when you kick the pedal in.  A lot of times it's between 10 o'clock to noon on the volume dial.  This works great for adding basically a second channel to a nice sounding clean tone.  I like doing this with a Fulldrive 2 and a clean Super Reverb.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Ben

Re: Bad Monkey settings

I have a Bad Monkey and have had great luck with. However as the BM is a Low Gain type of Pedal You need to consider your Amp, and to a lesser degree the guitar.

For my Marshalls I run this pedal with Everything @ noon as I run the Plexi around 8 and my JTM 45/100 around the same.

For my Fender Type Amps I run a booster pedal in front of the BM. Either a HBE Power Screamer or an Xotic AC Booster. This is to simulate a bit of a Dumble style, staged gain set up. This is where this pedal shines. For non-MV based fender amps you need to push them into natural breakup and then this  thing will give a nice nudge for some killer grind.

It's a bit like a TS with much more rounded mids.

Not sure what type of sound your looking for or about your rig. Alot of people don't like the Bad Monkey as it's not a high gain pedal but those that figure out how to use them love them!!

Re: Bad Monkey settings

I don't know Eva...I think you may be too much of a "good girl" for that Bad Monkey pedal! You should just send that over...and some more Haribos!

Re: Bad Monkey settings

No WAY you´re getting that pedal Mr. Culler ... more Haribos, maybe ... but not the pedal. wink

Thanks everybody for your advice (which I do need Ben - after seeing Warren play yesterday I feel so very small ... lol) - I´ve been trying different stuff and I´m really happy with it up to now. As I have a Fender amp I might go with the idea of adding a booster pedal like you said Ted ... sounds good. Sometimes I wish I could just invite all you guys to my flat and have you teach me all about pedals and amps - I´m really such a lousy newbie sometimes ... lol
