Topic: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Hi All...just got home from the Coach House where I sat not more than 12 feet away from JB and he played a GREAT show. I hadn't seen him since the RAH concert (where I needed binoculars) and I only found out last week that he was even playing there! Was this a last minute addition to his schedule? He said that tonight and tomorrow night are the 20th anniversary of his first ever professional gigs. He must have been very young when he started out !!!!! Wow! He was just amazing. We all know what a wonderful guitar player he is but I am blown away by what a good singer he is as well. I love this guy's music !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Hi everyone. Just a quick note about the show. Superlatives don't do it justice. Joe and the band were  in great form last night. Set list was the same as Florida. Light show didn't make it since they flew in and it is in the rig somewhere else. Tried to get video but security immediatly stopped me. No video allowed in the venue. Don't know if that is a regular policy or something new. Gotta run, I am leaving work early again to catch #2 tonight. I will be suffering from a Bonaglut tomorrow.  Cheers, Rick.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

I have been a long time fan, but last night was my first time seeing Joe Live.

My thoughts:

The Venue -

400 total seats in the venue.  It was a little too warm in the room and they could have/ should have cooled it down some, but by the time Joe took the stage, it was at least tolerable.  My wife & I had dinner there and it was fairly decent; not great, but decent.  We bought our tickets about 6 weeks ago so I was center stage about 25' from Joe et. el.  I was a little claustrophobic with all the tables so close together, but that quickly faded to irrelevance once the show started.

The couple in front of us bought their tickets last week and was initially seated very far from the stage.  They “upgraded” for $20 each ticket to be able to sit in the same area I was (let this be a lesson children to buy your tickets early)

The Show -

Shawn Jones opened for Joe with an acoustic set.  I had never heard Shawn's music and I was very pleasantly surprised.  Shawn's lyrics are very "Heart & Soul" as he described them and I thoroughly enjoyed his time on stage.  So much so that I bough his latest CD that he was selling in the back of the room.

So Joe comes on stage and the fun begins.  I have seen many, many guitar players in my time, but this guy is without a doubt, the most talented player I have personally seen perform.  Not since SRV’s tragic 1990 accident has there been this kind of talent in the guitar world (IMHO).

His guitars were awesome, from the twin neck’s that started and ended the show, to the signature Les Paul to the Firebird and of course the Flying V.

His tone is unsurpassed, his fingers move so fast I think there was a sonic boom at one point during “Woke Up Dreaming”.  Great tone in his voice and the acoustics of the place were better than I expected.  Nearly 2 hours of non-stop fun

Bogie Bowles is an exceptional drummer and Carmine & Rick did yeoman’s work last night.

If I have any criticisms of the show I would say that Carmine’s bass was, at times, a little too loud and drowned out some of the vocals.  The selfish side of me would have liked to have heard “Blues Deluxe” and “Asking Around for You”, but overall, I was very pleased with the set list.

Hearing his music on a CD is nice.  Seeing him play is GREAT.

For those of you who were there last night, I hope each of you enjoyed it as much as I did.  For those going tonight, strap yourself in and get ready for the ride of your life.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Joe didn't play a Tele last night (I wish!), but he did play the Firebird!

I wrote down the setlist and took notes on what guitars were used where. Here's what I've got:

John Henry (MusicMan Double Neck, 2 humbuckers and a single)
Last Kiss (Bigsby)
So Many Roads
So It's Like That (JB LP with creme plastic)
If Heartaches Were Nickels
Further On Up The Road (R9 with different controls for bass and treble, like JB LP, flipped neck pickup a la Peter Green)
Sloe Gin
Lonesome Road Blues (Capo 3, supposed to be played on the Rossington but it was out of tune)
Happier Times (Ross. Capo 3)
Bridge to Better Days (Firebird)
Had To Cry Today
The Great Flood (JB LP w/ creme plastic)
Woke Up Dreaming (Capo 1)
Mountain Time (John Petrucci Music Man)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ball Peen Hammer (new Music Man double neck, 12 and 6 string, 3 humbuckers on the 6)
Just Got Paid/Dazed and Confused Medley (Flying V with a ridiculously awesome shiny strap)

I made a thread about the new double neck in the guitar section. I'm about to leave so I can't give a full review but damn what a show...during Woke Up Dreaming you can tell Joe took a little bit of Greece with him, it was cool!!

Edit: Ah and a quick note that I thought was pretty funny, I'm not sure if many people caught this. During John Henry Joe sang "I'm a long way from Capistrano, a long way from my home." instead of "Colorado". Pretty clever!

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

I don't think it would have been that exact lyric change, he did it because the Coach House is in San Juan Capistrano. Maybe he changes that lyric for wherever he's at, Capistrano worked out well though. With a little creativity you could probably make that work where ever you're at.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Sounds like you had a pretty good time at the show Rockhammer. And speaking of Shawn Jones, I did see him open for Joe 2 years ago in Santa Ana playing an electric set with his band. He was vey good. The night before, we saw Joe at the Coach House.

In Santa Ana, not only did we have Shawn Jones and Joe and Band play, but Robben Ford was the headliner. Great show wilh a very bad ending. My friends Jacque, Ken and I had our rental car towed away sometime during the show. Found out it was gone at about midnight. Ended up meeting a very nice, young lady at the towing lot. All of a sudden, up comes this guy that's older than her, but that looked awful familiar. Yes, it was Shawn Jones. His niece had come to watch him play that night and she got her car towed too. So she called "Uncle Shawn" to come help her. Here's a picture:

Got back to where we were staying at about 2:30 AM. Another lasting California memory! lol

Thanks for the correction on the Firebird.  I don't play and know just enough to be dangereous.  He could have been playing a Ukulele and it would have still sounded great

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

I was telling people at the show that I've probably seen Shawn Jones more than any other artist simply because he opens up for EVERYBODY.

I remember the Galaxy show, that was when the Galaxy was almost shut down. Joe performed an amazing version of Asking Around For You on Lucille, just beautiful. Robben was on his Truth tour. I'll be seeing Robben in December at the Coach House, I'm excited.

My guitar teacher (who was there at the Galaxy) also had his car towed, I gave him a ride to the impound place. I think he got a picture with Shawn there too actually. I ended up talking with Shawn a little yesterday before the show, he's really cool.

No worries about the Firebird. I'm pretty sure the only time Joe has done something with a Tele is extremely Zeppelin-esque intro to Tea For One. Granted the entire tune is Zeppelin-esque, but I heard Joe used the Tele specifically for those couple second.

Speaking of small instruments, Shawn's baby Taylor had a HUGE sound last night! I don't know if he just had everything cranked, but he got monstrous tone out of that tiny acoustic.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Rockfarmer got it right about Shawn's baby Taylor. He made a comment when he strapped it on about what we must be thinking after the medly of guitars he had been playing, but a HUGE sound emanated from it . Very good musician who was well received by the crowd. We were well primed for what was to follow...

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Hi all. Just rolled in from night two at the Coach House. This old surfer procured seats at ground zero with a very special lady. Joe went off in our face for two hours. Libby gave him roses at mid set, videos will surely follow. The performance was epic. At one moment, a string broke in mid song and he smoothly played around it, glanced to the side for the backup and never missed a moment in the transition. What a pro. We hung out hoping for a quick photo op but he had things to do and slipped out. We did get a shot with Bogie though. I think I have died and gone to heaven. That was as good as it gets.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Amazing show BUT this is the 5th time I've seen Joe (Coach House and Galaxy (Dec 07?), Monterey Bay Blues Fest and SJ jazz fest) and I still haven't heard Rick high enough in the mix. Last night I took the opportunity to walk all the way around the room to see if my seat near the stage was too close to hear the PA properly.  No matter where I was, I could barely hear Rick at the best of times, despite seeing him actively screaming around the keyboard playing tasty tunes.  Sloe Gin was really the only song where Rick was heard.

Hearing the keyboards would make this great sound even richer.

Is there any way to get this kind of feedback to Joe? Respectfully submit that this feedback would be lost on the FOH guy.

Tyler

p.s. it was GREAT to chat with Rick and the NorCal roadtrip delegation

Good Point on not hearing Rick during the show.  I didn't think of it until you mentioned it, but I don't recall hearing much of the keyboards either.

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

I was at both shows and also attended the sound check during the day.  I had a press pass as I was scheduled to interview Joe later in the day (BTW, it went great- will post to interview forums later on).
The reason Joe's Live Rig was not there was that this was a "fly in"gig.  He was primarily on the West Coast for the Guitar Center KOB event in Hollywood; but they decided to add 2 shows at the Coach House and we are all the luckier for that!!!  So, he only had a couple of his Marshall Speaker cabinets and had to rent the two Marshall JCM 2000 heads.  There was also a Marshall JMP head, but I never saw it plugged in.  His pedal board was minimal- Boss Dig Delay, Boss Chorus, Ibanez 808 Tube Screamer, Tremalator, and the Wah Wah pedal.
His guitars were the Bonamassa #52 Goldtop with creme plastic (one of the prototypes), MusicMan John Petrucci Baritone, Gibson Firebird, Les Pual w/ Bigsby, MusicMan Double Neck 6/6 & 12/6, and two Cherry Burst LP's

Did you all notice that new section of music on "Ball Peen Hammer" on the 1st nights show?? He actually just came up with that during the sound check and decided to add it to the live set that night, but later decided NOT to do it on the 11th; he said that they would be saving that new section for the European tour.  This was the 1st time I had seen him play that on an electric 12 string (The MusicMan 12/6 double neck was used-I will post photos later).

Both shows were EXCELLENT!! Bogie & Carmine spot on perfect and achoring the whole time; Rick with all the right keys, and what can you say about Joe that you all already don't know?? Even with the rented equipment-great tone, and phenomenal playing all night long!

Eargerly awaiting to hear about all of the special guests from the House Of Blues show!!!!

Re: Coach House - San Juan Capistrano

Rich, #52 is not a prototype. It was just a random guitar off the line. He put the creme plastic on because some people didn't seem to like the black. It is one of his all time favorite Les Pauls. It is on the RAH DVD for Sloe Gin and The Great Flood. Also used during the BOJH sessions as well as Black Rock.

What is cool is that one could of been anybody's it came from a dealer in NY.

Oh my Gosh, are you kidding me???? I wish the Register reporter really knew music a little better.  To say "...he might finally get recognized as the next Stevie Ray Vaughan after all."  is terrible. mad I mean if you know ANYTHING about Joe, he would be humble enough to take it as a compliment but one of the main reasons (IMHO) that he changed from a Strat to a Les Paul, was that he kept getting compared to SRV (nothing wrong with that) except Joe is Joe, not SRV!  Some people just saw a white guy with a Strat playing the blues, therefore he must be a SRV clone. :-(   Couldn't be further from the truth.
I don't want Joe to be the next SRV; I just want Joe to be exactly who he is- and that is an awesome guitarist with an incredible talent and a great understanding and knowledge of music.  He is a true gentleman and the consummate professional.   Joe, don't ever change man!! cool

Jim, Thanks for the info.  I had just heard that from somebody that was at the show with Joe.  We were looking at his guitars and this guy just picked em up and started playing them, and we started talking about why that one had the creme plastic, and that what he said.

Joe did have a good time with the new MusicMan guitars and was truly and honestly taken aback when Sterling Ball said that he could have them; it was like a kid getting his first guitar; Joe is a great guy!
