Topic: The Black Crowes Riverside Theatre-Milwaukee November 7th, 200....

On a very balmy and beautiful Saturday night, we ventured to downtown Milwaukee to catch the Black Crows at the Riverside Theatre. And what a terrific show we saw! Met Rev. Paul and Cathy at Mo’s Irish Pub right across the street from the venue. Upon entering the theatre, we discovered that the first 10 rows or so, of what I thought were permanent seats, had been removed to form if you will, a mosh pit. We were there in plenty of time to be wrist banded to enter the pit, but elected to move a little back to where we could sit.

The opening band was Truth and Salvage Co. and even though they were instrumentally very good, I really did not get into their music. It surprised me that even for the opening band a few people with seats stood. However, it did not surprise me at all that when the Crowes took the stage the entire audience stood up and remained that way for the entire show. One comment regarding the overflow crowd; I have never seen such a wide array of ages and characters at any show like this one in my life. You name it and it was there! wink

The Crowes were unbelievably good with Chris Robinson on lead vocals, Rich Robinson and Luther Dickinson on guitar, Steve Gorman drums, Sven Pipien bass and Adam MacDougall on keys. It amazes me how many songs this band can play at any time. It took well over one hour for me to hear a song from another live recording that I have of them from just this past December. Instrumentally, the Crowes are also just plain great! Since this was my first time seeing them live, I kept hearing good things about this guy named “Luther” on guitar. I had no idea that this was Luther Dickinson from the North Mississippi Allstars and I must tell you, he is a Monster on guitar! I measure all slide players as compared to the one and only Rory Gallagher. I’ve seen Derek Trucks live and Luther is in his class if not even better. I must have watched him for half of the show and was simply blown away by his playing.

If you get a chance to see the Black Crowes as Nike says, “Just Do It”! You most certainly won’t be disappointed!! Pictures from the night and admittedly, they are not very good:

As Roy stated I was there and it was great. Opening band Truth & Salvage Co are being produced by Chris Robinson so explains how they ended up on this tour. They have a '70's California rock sound (early Eagles, Jackson Browne, Stone Pony).

The high point , for me, of the Crowes was during the encore when they covered Little Feats "Willin'" my all time favorite Feat song. It was beautiful.

Kathy and I headed over to the Up & Under Pub after the show and got there in time for the start of the Steepwater Band which just added to the musical high of the evening (Steepwater Band just gets better every time I see them).
