I like it. A slightly different groove. I can dig.

I thought the same thing. I'm thinking Steve Jordan's the reason. I liked the brief slide work from Robbie McIntosh too. Listening to the video has quieted my unease (to some degree) regarding the new album.
Groove. I dig.
That is a setup I love! Rockin' the Two Rock and four 2x12s!
....the singing when it comes in...
It's like Fergie coming in...or her version of Sweet Child...just, something feels wrong.
The overall impression is...yeah, I DIG.
also did anybody notice John is playing a Jeff Beck model Stratocaster but with JM's "heartbreak" logo?
John plays a little ode to Jeff Beck at the very end of the tune.
weak.
No believability that he ever went down to the crossroads. No meaning to the song.
Rather than being a cover of the Cream version of Crossroads, it's more a copy of the more recent EC version, ie bland. Nice playing by Mr Mayer, but give me the definitive Cream version any day.
Phil

Well said Phil, I listened to it and thought, well it is clearly based on the Cream version, but lacks the power, then I thought rather like modern day Clapton. Strangely I had the melody in my head for a while afterwards than realised I was thinking of Loansome Road Blues. I know which I prefer...
Still the solo and slide work by Robbie McIntosh are quite good...
Eh, the haters will hate, the lovers will love....
I like it because it's more a soul version what he tried to do.

It's not about love or hate Deezer, it's being about objective. It is growing on me...
Of course it is. If you don't like it, you don't like it. If you do, you do. If it grows on you, it grows on you. It's fairly simple.
It's definitely cool, but I have just one problem. The TONE!! It sounds right for the solo, but switch to something else for rhythm please! Too crunchy for most of the song IMO. Cool video though, thanks for posting.

The statement "the haters will hate, the lovers will love" suggests a predetirmed opinion. However I think everyone has been quite open in their thoughts - stating whether they like the song or not, rather than whether they love or hate Mayer, that's why I picked you up on it. Cheers
at least we can be happy that a musician in the platinum selling pop market willingly sings a Robert Johnson song on television. Thats a great deal of positive attention and awareness for blues music.

A big amen to your post. It seems like ole Johnny is a lightin' rod for heated debate, but then I read a post like the one I've quoted and every argument is moot. Love him or hate him (I'm in the former category) he's breathed new life into a fading genre and brought it front and center to a huge audience.

I agree completely. He has brought the genre to a new audience.
Being a John Mayer fan actually turned me on to Joe. I was watching a youtube video of John where someone commented "Bonamassa is ten times better" or something to that effect and my curiosity made me search the name. I expected to find some evidence to refute that claim, but obviously that did not happen. It's why I'm here.
