Topic: "Stop" tone and lesson

Hey guys I've really been digging "Stop" lately for it's aggressive leads and glorious tone.  I have been up all night trying to get the sound close and licks right but I'm pretty close.  When I do the vid it I will go over both leads slowly note for note because some of them are a real b#$ch.  I may have some of it slightly off or missing a note here or there but oh well. I will post a vid ASAP but I need to get to bed now...just a teaser the gear will be as follows:

Gibson R8 Les Paul (no surprises there)
'68 Fender Super Reverb
Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet
Line 6 DL4

EDIT: so you don't have to scroll down for them I figured I'd edit my original post... tongue

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Hey man, I really dig the tone on the second lead break in Stop!, it will be interesting to see how you've achieved that one and to see how to play it big_smile

Looking foward to it,
Matt

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

That is so strange, because on Friday, I decided that I was going to try to learn "Stop" note for note. It's been a while since I tried to do something note for note, but "Stop" has so many cool licks and trademark Joe sounding solo parts I thought it would be kind of like a guitar lesson in itself. It also has a lot of cool EJ type of chords in the fills. Plus, it's one of my favorite Joe songs right now. I started yesterday and went through the song a couple of times, picking through the solo and verses.

The solo is almost all B minor and pentatonic scales, but the hard part is the feeling and bends (of course). For me, it's been easier stepping away from it, and playing the different licks from memory. Then I'll go back and see how close I get it.

Great song to learn Joe's style with.

Aaargh!!! What's going on here?
You guys steal my thread! :-)

I'm digging In stop! too, especially in the intro lick currently.
Maybe we should share the tutorials?
Let me do the intro lick, Justin the Lucille lead part and
Ken or Matt the second lead break?

I will try to archieve the sound with:

JBLP #140
ceriatone 2550
ceriatone HRM100
TS808 Ri
rocktron intellifex BF

You guys better hurry it up then because they are uploading to Youtube right this minute! lol I really hope these help because it's such a COOL song.  The leads for some reason were really tough for me to work through but now that I think I picked the right ones by ear now I just have to work on speed.  I'm like 80% on some, 100% on others, with about 70% control.  You can always tell the great guitarists because the instrument looks like it's playing itself.  Anyways I hope you guys enjoy these as much as I did making them!

Checked it out, great job! That amp with the fulldrive and dl4 really nails that sound. Makes me wonder why Joe is lugging all that gear around! lol

You really have a good feel for the opening lead and I think you've got it a lot closer than I got so far. I think I'm hitting most of the same notes, but I think your fingerings and positions are closer to what Joe is really doing. That must be all the woodshedding on EJ that gave you a head start on me wink.

The chords are Em, Bm and that "other" chord is just a F#7. I think Joe is just playing the highest 4 strings on the Em and Bm (letting the bass pick up the lower notes).

Great video, again. I will be stealing some licks...

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Thanks Ken, it does make you wonder don't it? lol  When I played my first old Super I knew I had to have one.  Anyways here they are in all their glory (and mistakes... sad )

LOTS OF CLAMS but I tried to go as slow and clean as possible so everyone watching can copy it easier.  I also watched the video of Joe in the studio playing "Stop" to get most of the fingerings right.  Good luck everyone and feel free to critique and comment! cool

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Great videos! Your tone is out of sight with that simple rig. Tell me a little about the plexi shield. If you use it in a live situation without miking, does it muffle the tone or just bring the volume level down (so that the master can drive the power tubes harder)? I use a Marshall with a 4x12 cabinet in a live setup, but we sometimes don't run anything but vocals through the house PA.

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Thanks for checking the vids out.  I find it really funny how many questions I get on the baffle in my vids!  Here's how the baffle affects the sound, at least to my ears.  I find that it reduces the amount of treble hitting your ears slightly because treble frequencies travel faster than mids and lows.  The treble hits the baffle and then gets deflected upward and to the sides giving the mids/lows time to catch up for a more even sound.  I also find that you can nudge your volume a click or two higher even in small areas.  If you were playing large stages with the audience a decent distance away the effect would be even more dramatic.  I also think that the baffle tightens the low end up a tad too.  I really like using the baffle for doing my videos because it really reduces the amount of distortion and compression from the camera mic and gives a "truer" representation of what is actually going on in the room.

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Is ClearSonic the best way to go with these plexiglass shields? I'm not sure that I am handy enough to try to make them.

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Wow Justin that really impresses me and make me think about
the sense or non-sense of the big multi amp rigs.... hmm
Anyway, your playing and sound is top notch as usual.
I really like the cleaner bits in the rhythm stuff.

Funnily, I havent seen your video until now.
Today I made small tutorial about the intro lick myself.
I have seen that I made it slightly different than you but in general the same.

Here is my attempt.

Gear was my JBLP #140, Ceriatone 2550, HRM100, TS-808 RI, Intellifex
and a 2x12 stereo cab with EV12Ls (means, only one speaker for each amp)

Sounds good, I notice that you like to play in E Flat a lot.  I like how E Flat beefs a guitar up, especially a guitar like a Les Paul.  They just have a meaner tonality that sounds cool when detuned.  Thanks for the kind words about the tone Alex.  That rig is currently my favorite because it sounds killer and is easy to setup.  The beauty of the Fulldrive is it essentially adds 2 very good gain channels to an already amazing sounding clean amp.  I think of my current rig as a really really good sounding Fender Hot Rod Deville, or how Fender should have made them sound.  I'm really thinking about picking up some more old Silverface amps due to their abundance, great tone, and affordability.  Wouldn't mind having a Princeton Reverb for the same tone in a smaller package. roll

To Wharris, yes Clearsonic is probably your best bet if you don't make your own.  It is easy to make your own but you don't save a fortune.

Maybe Alex is just being nice to his singer. Easier to sing the higher notes when you're tuned down 1/2 step...

Looking forward to seeing the videos when I get home tonight!

Ken, thats exactly the reason we play in E flat. To support the singer.
But as a side effect I can confirm what Justin said. It beefs up the sound,
especially the lower mids and bass.

Justin, the FDs love Fender amps. I have heard them many times in combination
with them. The very best I ever heard was a guy playinga  small 1x12 Musicman amp with a FD.
Hell I wish I could reproduce that sound. Probably it was his playing too. ;-)

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

JUSTIN/ALEX
Both great vids and both great tones and yes tuning down 1/2 step works for our band also
but is a pain when you want to work something out in standard pitch LOL

"Everybody's entitled to my opinion. wink

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Thanks for the lessons ... I have been trying to figure out parts of the solo looking at the studio verison too, but you got the job done for me jeje

Thanks a lot, tomorrow I hope i'll get a chance to play my really small rig (compared to yours guys), and try out to follow your video.

Do you guys know if a playback for te song is available somewhere?

Thanks a lot,
Mica.

JBLP #214 very proud owner smile

Re: "Stop" tone and lesson

Hi! Does anybody know what pedals (effects) JB uses for the "Stop" song, lead and rhythm?

Hi Alex
Slightly off topic question here but how do you like your Ceriatone 2550?
I got some holidays coming up in August and I might buy another kit off Nik and a Marshall Clone is high on my list.
Cheers
