Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

For me it's a toss up between Little Wing and Tin Pan Alley.
They both make the hairs raise on the back of my neck.

Hey Brack,

That clip is taken from SRV and Double Trouble "Live from Austin, Texas":

It's actually from the television show "Austin City Limits". He appeared on this program twice. Once, when he was younger and battling his addiction to alcohol/cocaine. There are I think, three songs from that show. The rest is from his second appearance after he conquered his addiction and it is quite evident from his physical appearance, the difference between the two shows. However, once Stevie hit the stage, the music just flowed from him. I remember our friend Joebeacon telling me he had met Stevie a couple of times and that even if Stevie was higher than a kite, he still went out and performed flawlessly.

I personally own this DVD and his "Live at the El Mocambo" DVD and both are just excellent. I'd recommend both to any SRV fans! smile

Not a star my friend, just a long time admirer of the great Stevie's work. Now if you really want to hear an expert on SRV, we should both ask Deezer. wink

Don't forget Live At Montreux 1982 & 1985. The historic 1982 where Stevie got booed and where David Bowie and Jackson Browne both first heard him. smile

Thanks Deezer, I think the 3 DVD's are being sold as a package, and at a good price. Hard to believe now, Stevie ever got booed..... and at Montreux!! Unthinkable, isn't it !!

It was because he was too loud and following acoustic acts, and basically stunned the crowd.

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

Crossfire
Tightrope
Leave My Little Girl Alone
Riviera
Voodoo Child

These are the ones that spring to mind. As to why, because I love them.

Crossfire is set to play when my dearly beloved wife phones me and Tightrope plays when my best friend phones. I will just point out that the titles have nothing to do with the allocation of the songs

Of course I own Live at the El Mocambo, Live in Montreux '82 & '85, Live In Austin Texas, Pride and Joy and American Caravan big_smile

Lenny......from the El Mocambo gig.....I had to see him ASAP......much like our JB, he was special.....RIP

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

All of this talk after Stevie died was about who was going to replace him. Well, it is Joe. Joe doesn't sound that much like Stevie. He isn't a Strat guy like Stevie. His singing doesn't sound like Stevie. I mean yes, there is a slight resesmblance, but just because they're in the same genre. But Joe is the next Stevie, if you count the next Stevie as the guy who can bring blues back to the mainstream while singing the praises of those who influenced him, and doing it with a single-minded determination. Stevie may not have been a big influence on Joe, but Joe has Stevie's spirit and passion.

Still makes me tear up to this day.......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjVXuxz6 … re=related

What also makes me very sad is there is no monument in Wisconsin marking the place of Stevie's death. I know our little buddy Tallan Latz and his dad Carl, have gone to the site to play him a song. I can only hope it made Stevie smile.

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

My neighbors saw Stevie play at Cal Expo (the state fair in Sacramento) and said he was booed, this was a few years before he ever hit it big......they wernt ones that booed, blown away with Stevies guitar and the decibels coming out of them amps....I had my ear ringing for a day after getting as close as I could to the stage when I saw him in 1985....maybe the loudest Ive ever heard anyone play, sent chills through me though....I dont think JB is the next Stevie, he has worked on his vocals so much in the last few albums, I'd compare JB more to Clapton....

As I said, not in style, but in what he's doing.

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

Rivierra Paradise from the In Step album is a beauty......sublime playing by a master of feel.........

Lenny is great too........

Here is an interesting link where you can see that most of Stevies songs were covers......... http://www.secondhandsongs.com/artist/4945

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

Yeah, he did a lot of covers. But like Joe, he took them and made them his own. Nobody had heard of Texas Flood before Stevie made it his signature. But I'd also like to point out that In Step showed what he was fully capable of doing in his own originals. Songs like Tightrope and Wall Of Denial were his best written songs, with powerful messages that didn't devolve into preaching. Scratch N Sniff and The House Is Rockin' were rocking songs that were fun and witty ("Walkin' up the street you can hear the sound of some mad honky tonkers really layin' it down"). That's what was a shame. Like Joe has had the opportunity and blessing to do, Stevie was just beginning to refine his songwriting style and vocals. That's what makes his death so tragic. He was not even close to showing that he was going to peak. It would like if Joe had stopped at Had To Cry Today. With Stevie, there were flashes of songwriting genius, Pride And Joy, Couldn't Stand The Weather, and Life Without You come to mind. But In Step was the first sign that he was starting to refine his skills. He had a killer partner in Doyle Bramhall, and he was just getting better and better. As Doyle said once, "By the time you get to Hard To Be off of Family Style, that **** is hard to sing."

Re: Favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs and why?

Cold Shot, Little Wing, and Voodoo Chile.  Don't ask me why, like a lot of music I love I have no explanation for where it sends me - it just does.

I, like Deezer, mourn for what could have been and was yet to come.  I was one of the lucky ones who got to see him 3 times - he is missed.  Probably second most played on my iPod - it never grows old.

Little Wing.

Just because.

And also because it's the favourite song of my 13 year old guitar playing son.
Stevie is his hero....

Deezer - have you heard Virgil & the Accelerators (see their thread) version of Couldn't Stand the Weather - well worth a listen - let us know what you think.........
