Re: John Mayer- new song

This is what Mayer has said about his new album:

"I approach music like a director doing a period piece. Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."

Battle Studies showcases universal themes on Heartbreak Warfare, Assassin, and War of My Life, while flexing guitar chops on Rock Song, a reinterpretation of Crossroads and the phenomenal Who Says. And one of music's brightest new talents, Taylor Swift, makes an appearance on Half of My Heart.

Re: John Mayer- new song

Thats the one thing that niggles me about Mayer, he doesn't half spew out some drivel. I do not know if he is taking the pee or just full of himslef. Both I guess.
That said he is an incredible talent.

Re: John Mayer- new song

the song is bit soft for my ear, but as an artist he interests me, - brave enough to play what he wants and not conform... And made Slash look very wooden when trading solos on La Grange!

Re: John Mayer- new song

I like this song. I know everyone says this but i would like to see him do more blues (cos he clearly can) i think maybe the reason he doesn't is cos he thinks so much of srv and other famous blues artists that he doesnt feel he could break the mould in that area. So this song i guess you'd call easy listening, and thats what it is.

Re: John Mayer- new song

though he does cover "Crossroads" on the new record.

Re: John Mayer- new song

First it's the single "Who Says" - I love Mayer as much as anyone, but the song sounds lame and he's borrowing a little too heavily from "Stop This Train".  Second strike is his choice of Taylor Swift on the album - There's got to be hundreds of female singers five times more talented than the Nashville creation.  Talented or not, Taylor's a big country star and her inclusion is probably more a big grab for the bucks than a qualified  duet partner.  Last strike is his choice of "Crossroads" as his token cover - Aside from "Redhouse", "Crossroads" has got to be near the top of the most over-played blues songs.  I hope I'm wrong, but what's leaking out sounds like Mayer has spent waaay to much time in trendy clubs squiring far too many starlets.....oh, like in that video.

Re: John Mayer- new song

agreed, though I like his version of "Crossroads" because he goes to an F#- chord instead of an E7.

Re: John Mayer- new song

ya i agree with you.  This song was in all probability picked by the label to play on the radio.  John Mayer knows what he has to do in order to keep everyone happy, even if that means making a song that really resembles some melodies on "Don't Stop This Train" off of Continuum.  Even though its lackluster in my opinion it will still get lots of radio play because its "John Mayer".

The lyrics on the single also leave alot to be desired but i will give him some credit and say that the rest of the album will sound alot better.  He has some solid musicians backing him just as he did on his last record.

I will definitely give the rest of the album a listen when it comes out and if i like it i will buy it, but if not its alright, there is plenty of other music out there.  This way i could save some money for two of Joe's albums i want, Live From Nowhere in Particular and the RAH DVD.
