Re: Oli Brown Band

What a treat we had last night at the Baby Blue club!
Oli, Fred and Simon gave a great performance. We got some old favourites including Missing You, Played By The Devil, Psycho, Cold Sweat, Every Day I Have The Blues, Love's Gone Cold, Open Road...even got Steppin' Out, Steppin' In which I haven't heard since the days of the Blues Bar in Harrogate.
We also got a few new songs including I Can Make Your Day, What Can I Say and one which I don't know the name of yet which had Fredy doing his thing....and his thing is soooo great! Simon also did his thing which was also great. I did feel a bit sorry for Simon though...he had the brightest light shining right on him for the entire show. I don't think he could see a thing!
Oli was suffering with a bit of a dodgy throat which meant he couldn't do the a cappella part during Stone Cold (Roxanne) but that's ok. We don't want him doing any damage do we?

I took along 8 first timers ........and they were all blown away! My sister's friend and another lady even did a bit of tail feather shaking!! It was a great atmosphere even though there were only about 50 or 60 people in the audience they were all very appreciative....plenty of whooping and whistling going on.

I do hope Oli and the guys play Liverpool again....I'm sure next time the crowd will be much bigger.

Geoff and Sue were there and Chris and Sally. It was funny.....before the gig I was having a drink in the Pump House pub near the club. Anyway, I had some Oli flyers left from the previous night out in Liverpool at the Cavern Pub and I thought I'd hand a few out. I asked a couple standing at the bar if they were interested, started giving them the hard sell but they just held up their tix. They were Geoff's friends....Jane and Mike smile

Geoff has actually beaten me to posting a video from the show....great stuff. It's a cover of a song called Snakebit by Anders Osborne.

Looking forward to seeing your photos Geoff

Re: Oli Brown Band

Oli and the boys will be back in the studio in January with a view to the second album being released "around April". I for one can't wait - we had a taster of some new tracks last night, and it sounds like it will be worth waiting for.
We last saw Oli perform live on his spring tour, and I recall being very impressed with how he, the band, and their music had developed since I saw Oli supporting Aynsley a couple of years earlier. What comes across now, is that Oli really has his own recognisable style/sound. Not just straightforward blues, but an edgy fusion of blues styles with added swing and a little jazz, and yes, a little youthfullness that sets him apart from his peers.
The band opened with a rousing number called "Evil Soul" which I believe is one of the new songs, before finding more familiar teritory with  their great version of BB Kings "Every Day", and a few songs from "Open Road". New material included "Love's Gone Cold", "I Can Make Your Day", "This Don't Mean Jack", and "On Top of the World".
A decent sized crowd (for a Wednesday evening anyway) showed enthusiastic support, and demanded an encore - the boys returning with their blues version of the gangsta rap "No Diggity", followed by "Psycho", and "Black Betty".
One of the highlights of the night was Freddy Hollis' wonderful bass solo - in one of the new songs, but not sure which one it was.
An excellent gig - for anyone who's yet to catch Oli live there are plenty of dates left on his Autumn tour. http://www.oliselectricblues.co.uk/gigs.html You won't be disappointed.

Yes, I know that, but I was asking Ian if there were any videos or photos from last night. I view Tripsy's video page quite often since where "friends" on Youtube.

Martin

Yes, I know that too and I would agree, Tripsy is one of our top videographers. I also would like to have Oli come to America for a bit of a personal reason too. And that is to sign this picture:

Once signed, it will be hung right next to the signed poster that I have of him and his band, which I received from someone who is very generous and sweet. wink

I know Oli really appreciates both Tripsy and Duncan for all that they have done for him and rightfully so. smile

Re: Oli Brown Band

I wish I had been at the Robin with you, guys. Sounds like you had a great night.....Oli, Fredy and Simon never fail to deliver!
Ian, it sounds like you had just about the same set as we had at Liverpool. The new song with Fred and Simon's solos is called Don't Mean Jack...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRd1bdFsZF0

This is a new one called What Can I Do

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlFq11Qm … re=related

and this one is the opener called Evil Soul

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJJinvTm … re=channel

I can hear a little bit of Last Kiss in Evil Soul....listen to the riff at 2.25....what do you think?

I've seen them five times this year so far and can't wait for the next one which will be Leamington.

Re: Oli Brown Band

Gosh, I can only hope someday to take videos this good. Lady Tripsy, these are just simply awesome! Looks like it may be time for me to try and bring in a tripod to a show, There's no way I can hold a camera that still! wink

Got one question, does Oli always finger pick or does he use a regular pick on occasion? Just amazes me how good he is already considering that he really hasn't been playing all that long, since age 12. smile

Hi Roy

Last couple of times I've seen Oli, he's used a thumb pick together with finger pickin'. I'm sure it's one of the elements that defines his sound/style. Great to watch him at work close up. You'll get your chance one day Roy. (I know how you feel - you've had Davy over there long enough wink )

Thanks Ian, smile

I was wondering about that; that young man sure can play! And wait a minute, you not only have Oli, but I seem to remember a certain fellow by the name of Joe spending a large amount of time over the Big Pond too. wink

Regarding you're other post on the ZZ Top thread, I don't know Ian about you wearing a Stetson to the show. If you did, the person sitting behind you would barely see the ceiling in front of them. lol

Oh and Davy, I'll see him next month in Chicago. He wants me to show him a few new tricks on guitar. wink lol

I was going to say "standing" before Ian, but now that you said it, maybe you should put the person on your shoulders? Of course, then they would have to watch their head so they don't hit the balcony! lol

"Mind Your Head"......those signs in England really made me chuckle; saw them all over. Such a proper way of telling people to look out above. smile
